Stalker v1 and Snake-Eyes v1 were the first two ARAH figures I bought at TRU back in 1982. That one shopping trip ended my 5 year Star Wars figure acquisitions! From that point on, it was Yo Joe!
P.S. Loved the Hoodie Coco talking backpack with the scrappy sound LOL

The super sonic fighters added two tiny flashing lights. Thats what made them super. So very, very super.

As a kid I never had an issue with the back packs. Myself and ever other kid I know took them off the first day we had them. It wasn't difficult and it was fun to take something apart. The line was nice because it was the first time in years kids could get their hands on a Cobra Commander with a hood. Th Gen Hawk is my favorite version, even though he is rocking the John Kerry tan. As for the colors, as a kid we may have thought some were weird but it didn't slow down our imagination, after all the main villains had bright shiny metal faces. How well do those provide camouflage 😉

I think I speak for almost every kid born in the early 80s... the clumsy, stupid backpack was taken off by the end of the second week and put in a drawer. The figures were still played with, in fact they did an amazing job on them.

The original Stalker was one of my favorite figures. This figure looks better without the backpack. I loved the backpack gag in the video.

I had all 4 of the Talking Battle Commander figures. I had gotten Overkill first, then Stalker and finally Christmas of that year I had been given Hawk & Cobra Commander. As soon as i got the first figure, Overkill, and realized the backpack could not come off, my mom helped me figure out how to take it off. That backpack was taken off by the end of the day. Lol. They were cool then.

This was my first Stalker figure as a kid. I removed the backpack right away, of course. I have no problem with the colors on the figure, since the yellow is a bit darker and not blindingly neon. The black shirt and off-white/black camo pants are an interesting combo. That being said, it would be great to see it in more military-appropriate colors.
I always used the little peg on the ginormous MG as a handle, which made it easier for the figure to hold it. The one thing that always made me wonder was the odd way the arms fit into the torso. The latter seemed a bit narrow, making his round shoulder stick out.

Never had this figure as a kid - the pants don't bother me but that yellow has to go. You're right about that sculpt! It'd be amazing in real military colors. I only had the Overkill figure from this subset, and I'm about certain he sat in a box for a couple of years until I took him out and removed that stupid backpack. To this day I don't know why they would go through the extra effort to make that backpack bolted on.

Ha! Let's Party is something my best friend and I STILL scream to each other. That said, if you took the backpack off Stalker, it revealed probably the best version of Stalker in the entire vintage line. And my favorite character too.

  • @MichaelAlexKawa
    @MichaelAlexKawa 5 років тому +4

It makes no sense that they didn't have Stalker yell "Yo Joe" instead of "Let's Party".
Very informative and awesome review, the only figure I have from this series is Cobra Commander, and that backpack really annoyed me, like you said why was it not "easily" removable like previous soundpacks.

My son and I found that version of Stalker, Hawk and Cobra Commander in the box I got at a yard sale. I remember replacing the batteries in all 3 backpacks, only to remove them a week or so later. Among the huge pile of accessories, we did find a black backpack that I think belonged to the Night Force Repeater and that covered the flat spot. He also served as a driver or passenger on any of the vehicles my son had, that had the pegs in the seats. On a side note, my second G.I. Joe was a talking one that was one of the first issues of the 12" figures with lifelike hair. Those you had to pull the string that the dogtags were attached to. I forget how many sayings he had but eventually the box would wear out and poor old Joe either lost his voice, sounded drunk or the string wouldn't go back in and you cut it off. Mine got stuck and you couldn't pull it but he still was right there with the rest of my ranks.

These were such neatly sculpted figures and the backpacks were unscrewed as soon as I had opened them. The cool thing about Stalker as a character and what he represents was a typical 'Nam era draftee that came from the mean streets of America and channeled that energy as a good military man and badass on the battlefield.

I’d love to be able to speak to GI Joe designers from the 90s and ask them a few things, like why things were intentionally ruined? A figure with a giant box attached to its back has almost no play value. And, even as a kid, I avoided figures with “battle features”. I was able to make my figures kick just fine in their own, I didn’t need a gimmick to do that. I remember walking down an aisle in Toys R Us in the early 90s and asking “what happened?” to my beloved GI Joe line.

I am not really surprised that they sculpted this version of Stalker with snarl. It was early 90's after all and heroes snarling was huge back then thanks to Rob Liefield and every other comic book artist that followed his style. Even G.I. Joe comic books weren't safe from that art style.

Stalker is one of the best characters in GI Joe.
Honesty this series of figures the 90s were trash. I cannot like the Joes that strayed from the military adventure style of the 80s.
The tundra Stalker figure is cool, but I think it should have been a new character.
For a real bad ass version of Stalker check out the 12 inch Showcase made figure. They made several Joes that look great.
On learning more about his background I found it odd that he was a Ranger in Vietnam. Hama should have called him a LRP or LRRP. This special ops team was relabeled Rangers during that war. For some reason later in the Joe line Recoil was called a LRRP. A character that did not serve in Vietnam.
If any one wants to know more about LRP/LRRP/Rangers in Vietnam I recommend the 3 book series Six Silent men. Each volume is written by a vet who served during the period the individual book covers.
PS. I think the big goofy MG was partially modeled after the Browning m1919a6.

St-ALL-ker, huh? All I can think of is the Family Guy bit with Stewie pronouncing "whip cream" by overemphasizing the "h" in whip. If Timmer reads this, how about a parody of that bit? I'll get you started, here's the script:
    Timmer: "Hey, what's up HCC788?"
HCC788: "Oh, just imagining what a great world it would be if every GIJoe figure looked like St-ALL-ker version 1."
    Timmer: "Wait... what?"
HCC788: "You know - Lonzo R. Wilkinson. Pride of Detroit. Codename: St-ALL-ker."
    Timmer: "You mean Stalker."
    HCC788: "That's what I said. St-ALL-ker."
Timmer: "Why are you putting so much emphasis on the L?"
    HCC788: 'I'm not"
    Timmer: "Say: Walker, Texas Ranger."
    HCC788: "Walker, Texas Ranger."
    Timmer: "Now say: Stalker."
    HCC788: "St-ALL-ker."
    Timmer: "Stalker!"
    HCC788: "St-ALL-ker."
    Timmer: "STALKER!!"
And so on and so forth. It'll be a hit.

That's because we've allowed ourselves to get to offended over every little thing. People need to just let stuff go sometimes.

Funny thing is that must of us growing up in the 80's had that sound box keychain that had gunfire and bomb sound effects so we didn't need the gimmick

Would changing his code name to Striker be better?

This will be a little winded, but here we go. Sound effect gimmicks suck. Worst idea for any toy line. Always limited. Never sound that good. The speakers have to be so small, everything sounds distorted. And like you said, my imagination came up with better, without adding expense, and limiting play. Having it easy to remove would have been better. The name never did, and still doesn't bother me. Stalker has always had a bad image to it as a word. It never was used positively. But I looked at it as he's stalking the enemy. So if they ever add him to the live action, it would be an insult to change his name. The original straight arm was one of my first figures I got. Always like him, and upset me that he broke so quickly. My little brother had version 2 and I always like it. This one is cool also. Other than the black and yellow brings to mind the old Eagle Force theme, the colors don't bother me. As for this constant hang up you seem to have with camo or military colors, G.I. Joe was an anti terrorist team. Those have very lacks uniform codes. They are almost like and undercover special forces unit. So as long as they aren't dressed in a bunch of contrasting colors that are just painful to see, I DON'T CARE! If the figure looks cool, I'm not going to let little things like that drive me insane. If the colors go well together and don't make you want to jam a pencil in your eye, let it go already. Take it for what it is. A really well sculpted figure, with a cool look, and design, and a hideous back pack the was WAY too big with a useless feature. Lose the pack and it's another top tier figure for Stalker. Making it 3 for 3 in my book.

GI Joe began to fail when Hasbro started patronizing fans with gimmicks and goofy features.

I can't fathom why this was released. (MONEY) I mean come on, they cant be used in veichles.
Edit: A stalker can also refer to someone in the Chernobyl Exclusion zone.

What a terrible figure. Have you ever reviewed the 1989 Stalker? You've referenced him in other Stalker videos, but I can't find a review of that actual figure. It's the best version of Stalker, I think. You get the camo and awesome accessories.
