Hey Tony...just a big "THANK YOU!" for this video. I have (2) books that did not have this right. After finding and making the changes per the video my '96 X-90 1.6L is getting ready to roll again! I appreciate your work and will be checking out your other videos.
I've been through this process last year on my x90, first timing belt change I've ever done. Took a bit of researching to work everything out and get the right torque specs. Amazing video that answers the question, am I doing this right. Keep up the awesome work
Guys, i'm gonna leave my contribution here. My car has the camshaft gear positioned in the wrong way. In the bolt hole we have a pin and it must be connecter to the "E" mark, and not in the "I". Someone has done that way and it took a lot of time for me to figure out what the heck was going on because i studied the manual and the vids from a lot of guys too many times... After awhile i thought about that f..in gear and finally find out that it was wrong, then allign the crank in 12 o'clock and change the camshaft gear position to the "E" pin, everything works out as it was supposed to!
Excelent video and tips for consider en this kind of tasks. I have a question, is is necessary to block the crank gear as well as the cam gear in order to change the timming belt? If is it how is the best way to block them? Regard from Guadalajara Mexico.
Great video! To get TDC you have to remove the cover? Remove the radiator? How can you crank it to check with the screwdriver if you can't remove the cover? Thanks!
I was able to time my 1993 Escudo by watching your video. But now I need to set the valves which I don't know much about. Could you please make a video showing how to set the vavles for 1993 16 valve engine please? Thanks. I have subscribed. And when can I expect to see it?
Question for you my man. I am running a 91 tracker and am replacing a burnt out pully and belt. I am going to dope the cam gear, but the hash mark behind it isnt at 12 oclock! Its kinda at like a 11:45 if you know what I mean. So do I ignore the hash mark and line it up at 12, or do I line it up according to where they struck the mark behind the gear?
You should make a video of where all the vacuum lines go. I recently pulled the intake manifold off mine to fix a few leaks and forgot where half of them went when reassembling. Literally no videos out there with all locations either.
Is this same as a 16v with distributorless ign? Just make.sure #4 is tdc by pulling plug and doing tbe straw test when Straw comp up to top of the stroke on #4 check marks and verify all marks line up correct?
Quick question for you. So starting at 4, whats the firing order? And is it counter clock wise? Is it 4,3,1,2? I can't seem to get it to shift into 2nd gear. It starts boughing down.
I replaced the timing belt. Now it is time to put the grille back on. The clips that hold it in place all broke. I guess they got brittle after 26 years. Where can I find some clips?
Tony, Great video! Two questions: 1. When you time the engine with the timing light, do you use the #1 or #4 spark plug wire on the 1.6 - 16 valve engine, and 2. Is the 1.6 - 16 valve engine an interference engine ? Thanks..........
Hey! cant believe i've found your channel, do you happen to have a video where you show how to remove the camshaft? my 1997 sidekick is facing an extremely loss of power, and its because the camshaft pulley, the camshaft and that little piece that its between the two got wasted, thanks!
4:50. I just don't get it. What is a harmonic balancer? there is no electronic there, just the distributor... Also, my tensioner is different from the one in your video. Mine is made out of two pieces and if i put the spring it keeps the pulley away. I see your sprins is actually tensioning the belt
I dont know if you have run across this problem but i have a 93 sidekick with the 16 valve that intermittently doesnt have the 3rd cylinder back fuel injector working. It has new injectors. Plugs and wires cap rotor and new ignition switch. It will run good at times on all 4 cylinder s then it drops the 3rd cylinder for awhile. It has no check engine light on. I am running out of ideas. If you have an idea i would appreciate your input thanks.
@hwy83suzuki Do you have to use a timing light after install? I had a Nissan pathfinder that I marked and counted teeth on and didn’t have to time distributor after timing belt install is it the same with this? Thanks in advance!
I pulled the cam to do head gasket and put the cam back in, set timing on the E and no compression. I'm thinking the cam isn't on the right lobe. What valves should be opened and closed? I'd appreciate the help. New to trackers, save me from throwing this thing in the junk yard lol

Hey thanks for the video, I did exactly what you did but I had to change the camshaft seal and the crankshaft seal also, I never turned the camshaft, I just pulled it off changed the seal and put it back on , I did however turn the crankshaft a little one way or the other but I always put it right back on the marks, anyway I changed both seals and put the marks back just like the way before I started this. Put the timing belt back like I took it off. This is on a 1.6 16 valve engine however when I try to start it it sounds out of time don’t understand how this could be, in your video your distributor is different than mind meaning my number four wire is more to the bottom center on the rotor cap. but it is on the fourth cylinder, I did check my distributor again and in order to get it centered on the distributor cap to the rotor i have to turn the cap almost all the way in the clockwise position., will I hurt it by turning the engine over messing with the distributor. I see that it’s a interference motor.this was suppose to be a easy project , just put everything back just like I took it off but no somehow I did something wrong. Also I did check to make sure the 4 cylinder was on top dead center. I checked and rechecked everything is on it’s marks. I’ve never messed with the distributor so it should run. I was afraid I might have messed the valves by trying to start it but I don’t see how that could be when everything is on it’s mark , right lol 😂 I did read in my chilton manual it said not to turn the crankshaft counterclockwise, didn’t really understand that. I Maybe turned it an inch either way but right back where it belonged, would it be better to take the distributor out and readjust it so it centers up more on the tab where the bolt is that locks your distributor down? Right now it’s all the way to the right to get the number four wire to line up with the rotor. This is a mess plus my writing anyway thanks for your trouble

Hey, someone changed the timing belt on my geo tracker and now it won't idle correctly. What if they already flubbed up the belt alignment? How would I line it back up?
Tony, I watched your video on stabbing the distributor but its a different setup than this engine and distributor, I am having starting issues after installing a new reman head on my x90 1.6 16v. I have changed a few belts on these, and 2 heads, and each time I have set my distributor like this, Now I learn when you pull the distr. there is an arrow notch on the shaft housing and a small dot on the shaft, which should line up, You will have to back off a bit to install so the rotation will line it back to no. 4, I keep getting several other people telling me that is wrong, The marks on the shaft should line up to no. 1?? If I spin it to no. 1 the shaft marks do not line up, I tried it yesterday and about blew the spark plug out from a backfire, But at no.4 it starts at very low idle only for a few seconds and quits and will not restart!, Why?
Hey Tony, very clear Thanks! What is the stock timing in degrees? Your Opinion on how much I can safely advance timing? Hi Tony , I am always using your videos for your knowledge on Zuks . I thought my timing was out because I couldn't set my idle. It's running at about 1500 and distributor is maxout on the retarding . If you have any ideas what would or might be the problem would greatly be appreciated . Thank you for the videos and your time . Bruce
Check out our more recent "distributor Installation" video. Sounds like you may be a tooth off on the distributor. It may be to be reinstalled correctly
Thank you for your time .
