My favourite scene from this film is when Connor is trying to make a replacement sword, but with poor results. I like to imagine that its not just the sword he is trying to 'fold' and 'sharpen', but part of his Soul as well. He returns to his first 'home' for strength, but still needs help to heal and restore himself from a broken past.

A movie without respect for the Audience. There was a script called "Highlander III-The Reckoning" totally placed on Zeist , this was the real third part. This movie without Connery, without Mulcahy, without Bellwood(the screenplayer of the first Two) was done just for the fans without Imagination. Just a pale remake without sense in every sense of the first one. No reason to have a sequel in this way, the second tried to continue the story expanding the Mythology of the first one...They had the courage to do the second chapter with more Imagination. "From the Dawn We Came..."....or "Princes of the Universe" are clearly connected with the idea of a cosmic Mythology. The Quickening in the second becomes like the Force in "Star Wars". They needed a third chapter to explain better the Alien plot and the missing points of the second

This film fell apart for me at the start when Mako said Kane was the most feared and dangerous of the immortals. However at the time the Kurgan was alive and was established as 'the perfect' warrior and most powerful and dangerous. This was a great retrospective.
I saw this movie in theaters when it was new and I remember liking it.
I was a huge fan of the original and TV show, and had also just seen Gunmen in theaters as well. I liked that Lambert & Van Peebles were working together again, and from what I could tell by the trailers, this movie seemed to be ignoring Highlander 2.
What I'm saying is, I had a lot of reasons to be optimistic so I was kind of pre-programmed to like it. At the time, I probably looked past a lot of the movies flaws.
I did notice that it was basically a remake of the original, but I was ok with that. I remember I loved the soundtrack, especially the Motley Crue hair metal sounding sound during the final battle.
I'm going to have to watch it again, too much nostalgia.

I was a fencer growing up, so it's safe to say that the original Highlander was the backbone of my childhood. I was young when Highlander 2 came out so I will admit the visuals of it, I didn't hate it. But I always thought going back to the root s with Highlander 3 was really cool. With the bad guy in the samurai armor and the sorcerer mixed in in his past it was a really cool action sword fighter movie. As a after thought, The blonde chick was one of my teenage crushes for like 5 years after this movie

The appeal of the whole series has never been about 'logic' or continuity, but if you can approach it with no expectations, then they're always a fun ride, one way or another. And it's a testament to Lambert's screen presence that they all still manage to be as 'watchable' as they are. While the Adrian Paul versions, not as much.

Great review. To my understanding the official release went like this: Highlander and Highlander 3 are in the same universe. Highlander the series, Highlander endgame & Highlander the source are in the same universe. Highlander the animated series is in its own universe. Highlander 2 is in a parallel universe which is an off shoot of Highlander. Personally my dream would be to see a reboot of the first Highlander film and separately a sequel to the Quickening to explore that idea. I know that could never happen because they would end up competing with each other but I wish it could happen.

I have written a script called Highlander-The Princes of the Universe" which is a remake of the first Two creating a Mythology more connected and not controversial from the beginning , some good idea of the TV-Series like the Observers and the same about the various sequels and a real totally new third chapter placed on Zeist!! With my great surprise I have discovered the existence (after my script) of an Hidden Script called "Highlander III-The Reckoning" , totally placed on Zeist like script...is clear that Ramirez don't dies in the second...he was on Zeist!!! My idea is to do a Graphic Novel or something like this ...

    • @antoniogiorgiosgoldenmetal844
      @antoniogiorgiosgoldenmetal844 3 роки тому

In fact "Highlander -The Sorcerer"or"Highlander-Final Dimension"was forced to be in the same Universe of the TV-SERIES but in my opinion was just an alternative sequel to the second that was the only real sequel of the first. In the third seems totally ignored the end of the first one!! In the second Connor is old after the Prize and have powers to bring the Humanity to a Salvation from the Radiations creating the Shield , Brenda dies and there's a New Prize at the end of the movie with the come-back on Zeist( the best version is the italian/french version). The Quickening becomes like the Force on "Star Wars" considering the bond between Ramirez and Connor. Ramirez looks like Obi-Wan Kenobi and was not a bad idea... But they commited errors on the final script, probably in "Highlander III-The Reckoning" there was explanations missing in the second, but nobody has read this script

16:57 I think a remake is the best option. The original Gregory Widen draft of "Highlander" has been floating around online for some time now and I think if a remake took more cues from that rather than completely rehash the first film you'd end up with a "dark, gritty reboot" that feels earned because it was really all there from the start. For example, instead of the Kurgan, the main villain is called the Knight and is more of a cold, stoic meritocrat whose motivation for attaining the Prize is more murky.

Quite honestly, this should have been the HIGHLANDER II of the franchise. Connor rejoining The Game due to Kane's re-emergence so soon after Connor wins the prize would fit nicely. Both movies' themes are similar. The budget might have been beefier to create better effects. Then the series, then ENDGAME. The actual mess that was HIGHLANDER 2: THE QUICKENING should never have been.

Great review, as always. Harsh criticism but all painfully true. Incidentally, I wholeheartedly agree that a remake is in order; considering the convoluted continuity of this series, it's really the only direction to go in at this point.

  • @hyperguyver2

the first film was great, it definitely had this "lighting in a bottle" aspect to it that none of the sequels could recapture. I do consider The Sorcerer to be the only true sequel to the original film and I found it quite enjoyable despite being plagued with a few major problems. The film would have benefited greatly if they had been reworked in order for this to stand more on it's own. The character of Kane could have been built up a bit more as a significant threat to Connor's new way of life, such as framing Connor for another murder or even killing his new adopted son John and targeting his previously adopted daughter Rachel in an attempt to demoralize and break him. The expansion on Connor's historywas also a pleasant addition.
Overall I would give the film a solid 3 out 5. The elements that were new were fun and interesting, the action choreography and visual effects were a vast improvement, and the new score was complimentary to the original; but a few recycled plot points, weak or confusing dialogue, and continuity errors did hurt the final product.

My head-canon is that each and every highlander property takes place in its own individual continuity that may have elements that resemble those of the others, but aren't actually directly related to one-another.
Were I to rewrite the series, I'd still have Highlander come first, then do the TV show as a prequel series showing the gathering taking place throughout the late-seventies and eighties (and ending with the death of Duncan at the hands of Aman Facil as a segue back to the film). The rest, well, the rest would be better left forgotten.

What I'm about to say will most likely be considered Heresy, but the correct way to treat the Franchise is to scrub all memory of Connor, completely, to me this is also painful because Duncan and Connor shared great memories when they were together in their past lives, but the damage that the Highlander films have done, yes even including the first film for me, leaves a writer, any writer with unsalvageable material.
In my mind its best Connor not exist, jettison the first three films into the same abyss as Highlander: The Source.

    • @gtafelon
      @gtafelon 9 років тому +2

An interesting take. You're obviously a huge fan. Dropping a name like Aman Facil? Nice!
I was a big fan of the tv show, and i thought the way they fixed continuity was the best attempt of the whole franchise. Basically they made it appear that The Gathering did not occur in Highlander 1, and The Kurgan was simply a very powerful contender for the prize. Also, from the tv series depiction, The Gathering coould possibly never happen anyway, because new Immortals were still being born (Richie) in the present day. I really liked that though, because it keeps the gathering and the prize mysterious. In that case, you can't even be certain The Gathering will happen. Is it just lore? Do the Immortals actually fight for nothing? These are existential questions that we can draw parallels to in our own lives to help us identify with these characters. Who wants to live forever? No one.

In Highlander: The Animated Series, it wasn't the same Ramirez "returning". Sean Connery's live-action character was Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez. The animated character was Don Vinciente Marino Ramirez, a different character from Connery's Ramirez just as Connor, Duncan & Quentin are all different MacLeods.

I liked this movie for it's seemingly direct sequel to the original, and though it made no sense at all was a more modern take on the first film. I did notice that the film used a score or what seems to be part of the score from an Anime/OVA movie called ESCAFLOWNE, the score is called Black Escaflowne and I believe it was used on the Laundry Quickening scene and the Final Quickening when Connor wins. As much hate the 2nd film has, I have enjoyed it's attempts at correcting the film changing and adding some stuff to change the alien story, and truth be told, the Quickenings ARE THE BEST OF ALL THE FILMS...well rivaling the last Quickening in the original, albeit the first Quickening that rejuvenated Macleod.

    I've always loved Highlander III.
It feels more like a remake of the original rather than a sequel, but I've no problem with that.
It's by no means a great movie and it doesn't compare favourably to the original, but it still has many qualities: the screenwriting feat of providing a new immortal foe while the first movie was closed-ended (i.e. there were no more immortals by the end), great visuals and photography (especially the breathtaking scenery of Scotland superbly shot), the engaging score by J. Peter Robinson, the beautiful song "Bonny Portmore", the concept of Connor's past love interest being possibly reincarnated (Sarah/Alex, an idea the filmmakers had regretted not featuring in the first movie for the characters of Heather and Brenda according to Christopher Lambert in an interview), Connor having an adopted son, the introduction of magic/illusions,...
And it's always a pleasure to watch Christopher Lambert, he and the rest of the cast play their parts whole-heartedly.
It's a B-movie, but a B-movie done with "heart, faith and steel" (as Juan Ramirez (Sean Connery) said in the first movie) and I always enjoy watching it again with great pleasure.

If you remove the references to the Gathering from the first movie the one would make more sense as a sequel. It would make the first movies all about the Highlander and the Kurgan finishing what they started in 1536. However the concept of other immortals being trap thus making them incapable of fighting for the prize was and interesting way of working around the conclusive ending of the first movie.

    A few notes:
    1. To be fair, producer Bill Panzer had little creative control over this film, despite his writing credit. He was far more involved with the TV series at the time.
    2. Guns N' Roses was originally approached to provide a number of songs for the film, but they apparently fell out due to some behind-the-scenes conflicts.
    3. The film does indeed ignore the TV series, so Endgame ignores it in return. (In retrospect, it's the most pointless and disposable of all of the sequels.)
    4. Detective John Stenn was originally written as Detective Bedsoe--Jon Polito's character from the original film--in Brad Mirman's (superior) original draft.
    5. The Ramirez character featured in the animated series is actually a new character with a different first name, sorta like Connor and Duncan MacLeod.

If you watch the part of the movie where Master Nankano is forging a sword, the steps are correct but not in the right order! H/L 3 is better than 2! Also, it would have taken several days to completely forge, shape, temper, and correctly polish his new sword! Plus you would think a person passing by his clan sword would have grabbed it. His blacksmith tools left in a canvas bag probably would have rusted.
