Jerry a working comedian, Elaine working as an editor or assistant, George working for the Yankees or another company. So it's not as if the show writers ignored the matter of how these people paid their bills.

He plays himself, and most of the time can't manage any change in facial expression or emotional state, barely suppressing a smirk from the fun he's having in a sitcom. The rest of the main characters ARE real actors, and very good ones.
This show says all the things we think about saying but never would, born in 1960 in Boston it was very conservative, if the topic was too personal or emotional we'd sweep it under the rug, I still am that way, if emotions are involved I just swallow them, I've been stuffing emotions for 62 years, I'll probably burst the day I die.
