  • We visit the incredibly beautiful Croatian Island of Hvar- and explore Hvar Town. We spend the day walking around and exploring the streets and waterfront. We come across the Hvar Cathedral, or Cathedral of St. Stephen. We then make the long trek up to the Fortress of Hvar that looks over the entire town. We finish our day with locally made sandwiches while on the waterfront.

    City of Hvar:
The city of Hvar is a unique fusion of luxurious Mediterranean nature, rich cultural and historical heritage, and mundane, tourist present. It is situated in picturesque nature, facing the southern, side of the world that has given it all Mediterranean attraction and cheerfulness; facing sea, that gave it splendid and repeatable history, Hvar is an inexhaustible treasury of the scenery, atmosphere and adventure. Its name derives from the Greek name for island and town, that stood where today Stari Grad (Hvar became an island’s centre in 13th century) stands - PHAROS.
Hvar gained glory and power during middle ages being an important port within the Venetian, naval empire. Today, it is centre of island’s tourism and one of the favourite destinations in Dalmatian riviera - a town of smiling and courteous people, who are almost only dedicated to tourism.
    Featured in this video:
St. Stephen’s Catedral: The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Stephen, a pope and martyr, the protector of the Diocese and the city of Hvar. The renaissance bell-tower of the Cathedral and Hvar’s other bell towers (St. Mark, Franciscan and the ruined one of St. Venerande) are considered to be the nicest ones in Dalmatia. Hvar’s Cathedral preserves many valuable items and paintings of famous painters like Stefano Celesti, Palma Junior and the Spanish painter Juan Boschettus, but the most renowned painting is definitely Madonna, an example of the proto-Venetian art and one of the oldest in Dalmatia originating back in 1220.
Hvarska Pjaca (Square of St. Stephen), Cathedral of St. Stephen and episcopal palace, Hvar. If you visit Hvar, all the streets will lead you to Hvarska pjaca (Hvar’s square), the centre of city’s public and social life and the largest square in Dalmatia. The eastern side of the square is surrounded by the Cathedral of St. Stephen that was built on the foundations of an early-Christian church from the 6th century and that acquired its present appearance in the 16th and 17thcentury.
Fortress in Hvar Town: Looming high above the town and lit with a golden glow at night, this medieval castle occupies the site of an ancient Illyrian settlement dating from before 500BC. The views looking down over Hvar and the Pakleni Islands are magnificent, and well worth the trudge up through the old-town streets. Once you clear the town walls it's a gently sloping meander up the tree-shaded hillside to the fortress - or you can drive to the very top.

Pharos means Lighthouse. It was a colony of PAROS: founded in 385/84 BC. on the coast of Dalmatia. Excavations that began in the 1980s and continue until recently have brought to light a part of the GREEK city developed in the Stari Grad plain, cemeteries and part of its walls with fortification towers. Movable finds include everyday use and product handling vessels, coins, metal, stone and bone objects, jewelry, inscriptions, clay statues, etc. Recent investigations into the study of the urban design of the ancient city, its territorial district and its defense system have revealed an impressive cultural landscape in the area of Faros, whose geometric layout seems to have been designed by the Parian settlers in the 4th century. century BC As one of the world's best preserved ancient Greek cadastral systems, the Lighthouse was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. In the area of historical figures of the Adriatic region, it played a leading role in the turbulent historical events of the 3rd century AD. during the wars with the romans, lighthouse highlighted one of the most debated historical figures, demetrios the lighthouse, which was eventually defeated by roman emile Paul in the famous historic battle of lighthouse in 219 BC, which is described in detail by historical Polybius.

Hey guys I’m from Croatia my Grandfather was actually born on Hvar at the other end there’s a small fishing village called Suuraj where he was from, the reason so meany people go there to party is because at night the town changes and the night life comes out but mostly in mid summer and has some of the best and most expensive clubs and bars in Croatia

Thanks for watching Matthew. Good to know about the party island history. I think what we were more curious about is why 'in general' that island. I know at night things switch to party mode but I'm very curious how partying came to be on that island vs another. :) - Trevor

1:00 "that's why it looks a lot like Italy"
If you look at the Dalmatian coastline, a lot of towns and villages have the same style and most buildings on Hvar have been built after the Venetians left. It's a typical dalmatian (Croatian) style of building

Mljet, one of the Croatian National Parks, has two salty lakes and an islet on the bigger lake. The air smells of wild plants and herb there. Korcula is beautifu too. Don't miss Kornati Archipelago, another National Park, take a day trip from Zadar or Sibenik.
