The sensors work by projecting infrared light and then looking at how that light bounces back. Black absorbs the infrared light making it an endless void for the sensor.

Like it's very limited and devs definitely didn't understand how to best use the tech outside of maybe the two launch games, but it's better then people give it credit, people use it for vr programs and it works well enough from what I've heard.
Yeah i'm lead developer on an interactive wall system, basically a big 4 meter by 3 meter interactive projection, kids can throw balls and hit targets while playing educational content. I build the prototype with the Kinect V2 (the Xbox one version), its really good. The Kinect V2 was a big boon for interactive systems in healthcare, education, etc. The Xbox shipping with Kinect V2 may have gotten you a shitty periphery but it enabled a host products that gave joy to the elderly and those with mental disabilities. The only people doing anything like the kinectV2 and at their price point is Orbbec, random Chinese company, good lads. It has kept us and similar companies going.

From what I've heard, the depth sensing means that the wall cosplay wouldn't be much of an issue if he were able to play at the optimal distance. Well, unless it also uses some RGB inference.

I have a theory that kinect games had long loading screens on purpose so that people would sit down plenty while playing and not like pass out from exertion
@@KingofJ95 it definitely saw colour when I used to play with it. The colour of my clothes, the lighting and the background 100% affected how well it worked. Black clothes made it work terribly and paler clothes helped it chug along. Better lighting also helped. From what i saw just looking through kinect options it tracked my legs, body, arms, and head and it seemed to do all of that by what everything looked like. I know nothing about the technical side but i spent tens, if not hundreds of hours playing with that thing, so I feel like i might know a bit.
The problem with the Kinect wasn't that it didn't work. The problem was that it wasn't fun. In this case, its pure user error. Dan is dresses exactly like his wall, down to the cream coloured pants, and has a third arm holding his mic for him. I've seen the debug mode for the Kinect, and I can assure you it doesn't just track the hands. It tracks the entire body. But this is all in the visible spectrum, so of course it's going to get confused when Dan looks like Ninja Hattori blending into a wall.
In a way it has similar issues that VR and pretty much any devise relying on human motion to control the game. Videogames inherently are a way to interact with virtual worlds in a limited way. That's why controllers and keyboard are nice. You have only so many buttons to press and game designers get to relax with not having to account for inifnite many ways to control your character. Then you have this. Essentially infinite many ways to control the game but the game is programmed to do only so many things and if you don't do things close to perfect, or like Dan did, unintentionally sabotage the camera, it just doesn't work.

RT went to alot of effort hiring actual xbox kinect engineers to help develope the worlds worst kinect set up, complete with obstructions, no space for movement, and perfect camoflage with the wall to make it extra difficult for the kinect to track his movements

I've used a kinect at that line of it barely being far enough and I never had tracking issues like not being able to jump, he does jump very strangely but the kinect is based off colour and not just the hands

Unfortunately, there was a hefty learning curve and there was a legitimate concern that casual players wouldn't understand the mechanics so the dev team was forced to simplify the game

Yep. They seem to forget that Kinect was notorious for not recognizing movement and being just bad to use. The dancing game used as basis here is pretty much the only thing I ever heard players actually praise. Also a lot of people talk about colours when I'm pretty sure that's not what Kinect uses for seeing motion, meaning they would have set it up "incorrectly" too.

i'm fairly certain dan's jumping was failing because he didn't put his hands above his head, seeing as thats what it tracked for virtually everything else and the few times it worked he accidently swung them up
I used to play this with my brother before we moved and the Kinect got lost, always a pleasure to just swing your arms wildly and watch the carnage unfold.

Man, this game is my literal childhood, but RT, you should really get a bigger room for this kind of games
i'm fairly certain dan's jumping was failing because he didn't put his hands above his head, seeing as thats what it tracked for virtually everything else and the few times it worked he accidently swung them up
I used to play this with my brother before we moved and the Kinect got lost, always a pleasure to just swing your arms wildly and watch the carnage unfold.

The hit detection or health bar must be GENEROUS, even on the harder difficulty. That Twi'lek is just taking super battle droid bolts to the face.

Honestly this game was a huge part of my childhood. Never finished it due to a lack of English understanding but I loved playing it with my brother and my best friends! So fun to see RT play this 💜
Man I remember playing this at a friends house and being stuck at one of the first quests due to it simply not working. Somehow we still had fun for hours, good times

I watched this live, and I must say the agony of the whole chat yelling at Dan to change clothes so the game actually responds, just for him to dismiss it with "but it only tracks your hands" was a unique hell. I must've put myself on thin ice with the mods the way I kept spamming about how his wall-cosplay does in fact make the kinect have a harder time tracking full-body movements
