    You are my kind of radio friend 😎 !!!
    I ran one on the center of my trunk lid on a 1991 Honda Accord !
    For all of my setups , past and present , I run the standard length full size spring , 19 feet and 6 and 3/4 inches of coax , mount in the center of a flat surface like a truck toolbox lid , center of the trunk , etc and the SWR is usually flat in the middle of the band . 👍. Every setup is a little different .

    The best springs hands down are from those military whips. Usually you can find those at ham fests. The Hustler springs aren't near as good as they used to be. I had different masts on my van that I screwed together for 17 and 20 meters. 73

    Awesome vid! Aint nothing beats a 102, only thing Id personally upgrade down the road is just barrel spring, from the regular spring like you used in the vid, keeps it a little more stable with higher speeds and taking sharp corners!! Lol

    Nice work on the antenna!. A couple of ideas for you: Dimond. Akes a motorized fold-over antenna mount you might look at to help avoid the antenna hitting things, and Hustler does make a colinear 10m antenna which is 5/8 over 5/8, and if you put a little longer top whip on it, it will drop right down into 11m. And its a bit shorter physically. But higher gain over the 102" quarter wave.
    Just some "food for thought". Good luck! And 73s

    Looking great buddy! Can't beat that 102". Tuning and hitting trees can be tricky as you see. My initial video had it pulled back with string but I've been running it hinged back on my hinge mount and it's been working great.
    I've tried the barrel spring which is fat in the middle but my mount already adds some height so the nano VNA showed the SWR way to high. So out with the spring. But then I added a 1inch coupler as suggested from a subscriber, which you can find on amazon. Then that was too high as well. Hah. So just the bare 102" now.
    My 102" is also showing me a tight sweep like yours on the nano VNA. I always thought it was wide banded. But the top and bottom of the band are both 1.6-1.3 respectively, adjusted to favor ch33.
    My 2m/70 also lights up when I tx on CB as well and my CB meter jumps when I TX on 2m/70cm as well. Hah!
    Anyway, great project and editing as always.
    This is 404 Roadblock waving at you from NW GA!

      Thanks for the info about your setup! It seems to be wideband enough to work well across the entire 11 meter band, I'd just prefer if I could get the center frequency on channel 20 so it's equal in all directions. May have to get an extender of some sort to do that! Thanks for watching!

    • @GiantSequoiaNation
      @GiantSequoiaNation 2 місяці тому

      @ScuffedRadio Yeah they have 1 inch couplers on amazon for sure. Also since our vehicles are similar I wanted know where you got that center console? Mine has a cassette player and a cd holder. So I'd like to rip it out and use that exact setup you have.

    • @ScuffedRadio
      @ScuffedRadio  2 місяці тому +1

      That's the center console that comes with the LT trim package. Some of the Escalade models had it too. It's easy enough to go to a junk yard and get one to swap in. You'll have to pull both the front seats out and take the bottom off the dash but it shouldn't be too difficult to mod in. With a little modification to the pockets it has you can fit a standard CB pretty nicely!

    The 102 had its heyday on Baja Bugs and Pick-up trucks mounted on the rear quarter panel because of their height. At best they are a 1.2: 1 antenna and often a 1.5: 1 in most installations sitting still. Going down the road they run along at 2: 1 to 2.5:1 on average. For a pure sitting still mobile application, setting out ground radials and grounding to them will greatly improve performance!
    By the way: the 102's with the allen set screws are not what we had. Our 102 whips were brazed to the base nut and had a ball-hat on the tip. If you need a longer whip - buy one and cut it down in small increments to length.

    Best to put a ball mount on a corner or side so you can tie it down quickly. At highway speeds, a 7 foot firestick does as well considering bending, swaying and static buildup.

    I have a 102 whip mounted on top of my Yukon the 6in. Barrel spring is better. Also that other antenna is kinda acting like a reflector remove it and with the 6in. Barrel spring i bet the swr will be 1.0 or 1.1. enjoy the whip

      Yeah i need a spring like that. I may take a trip down to Dodge City CB to get one soon

    Does the 102" need a spring and whats the purpose of the spring❓ What's that device on the rear view mirror❓

    • @ScuffedRadio
      @ScuffedRadio  2 місяці тому

      The 102" needs a spring because it is too short for the 11 meter band by default. The spring adds electrical legnth which brings it into tune on the desired band.
      The device under my mirror is a radar detector. It detects cops running speed traps so I get an alert before they can get my speed.

    • @ScuffedRadio
      @ScuffedRadio  2 місяці тому +2

      The whip itself did not have a base when I got it, so I had to get the little metal piece that has the set screws and threads separately. I purposely got a longer one and it still wasn't enough even with the spring.
      I just drive around the height barrier and the awnings never come out over more than half of the truck so the rest of the drive thru I go like normal.
