CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) defeats the corrupted Superman (Christopher Reeve), and is reborn as the one true Superman, standing again for truth, justice, and the American way.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In a major departure from the tone of the preceding two Superman adventure films, this mix of vile deeds and fantasy heroics drops the "S" out of cosmic and goes for comic instead. Right at the starting gate, Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor) and a subsequent slapstick sequence upstage (Christopher Reeves again), who later develops an identity crisis. Gorman, newly trained as a computer whiz, starts working for a conglomerate run by the corporate nemesis Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn), intent on world domination. Gorman is sent to Superman's small town of Smallville to wipe out Columbia's coffee crop by fiddling with the computer side of a weather satellite. Clark Kent is in town for his class reunion, leading Superman to clash with Gorman, which in turn, leads Gorman to develop a hybrid red Kryptonite. Unwittingly, since Gorman's wits are always in doubt, the Red Kryptonite causes Superman to split into a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde schizophrenia -- but in two separate bodies. As the evil Superman swaggers around town, megalomaniac Ross Webster has other tricks in mind -- and in one of the more memorable action scenes (interspersed with a video game sequence), Superman is chased through the Grand Canyon by a fast-flying, very determined missile. Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole) is on hand for romantic interest (Margot Kidder only appears briefly -- she was growing tired of Lois Lane).

I wouldn't call Reeve a master actor. Maybe sentiment or nostalgia made you type that. He was great as superman but don't recall his work in the Godfather or Taxi Driver or....well you get the point.
George Reeves also did a good job of playing a dual role in the Adventures of Superman episode, "The Face and the Voice."
That moment at 2:25 is so powerful. No matter how corrupted Superman had become, the heart and determination of Clark was always destined to win in the end.

This scene is one of the best in movie history. It's incredibly clever, because it shows that Superman isn't a costume, or a red cape or an 'S' on the chest. Clark Kent is Superman. The good man from Kansas, who keeps going no matter what, to save the day.
The superman played by Christopher Reeve is immortal. We will always miss him.
You know it
I am 50 years old and this movie moment makes s1t1ill jump up and down like I was a 10 year old kid. One of the greatest movie moments of all time.
It doesn't matter how old you are, for those like me that grew up with the superman series, you always end up going back to that time in your life when you wanted to be "superman". I'm 41, and still want to fly. Superb. RIP Christopher Reeve. 👍👍👍
There was much more heart and cinetography in these old superman movies which is why they still hold up so well - modern movies might be better able to showcase superman's ability to wreck entire cities with ease but there still feels like there is something missing that reeves superman had.
John Williams has litterally created the most iconic music in cinematic history!!

The ending where he rips his shirt open and is "reborn", always sends shivers down my spine. The music, the flying, the look of Chris Reeve. Perfection!

Agreed! Brandon Routh did a fairly good job at following in Reeve's footsteps in Superman Returns, but too bad the movie, itself, was a boring disappointment. I remember being so excited to see that movie during the summer of 2006, but was left feeling very dissatisfied, overall. In retrospect, it is what I like to refer to as "the bummer of the summer". So much potential gone to waste. Man of Steel with Henry Cavill will never hold a candle next to the classic Christopher Reeve Superman movies, but at least it was very entertaining and a HUGE improvement over Superman Returns!

While Superman III may not have been the best, story-wise, THIS scene was, by far, one of the best scenes in all 4 Superman movies. Not to mention the beautiful shot of the Twins at 3:10
???
@@jesussavedrjm6818 the twin towers
If you take the movie and cut out about half the Gus Gorman scenes, the movie tends to be better. If RIchard Pryor had been hired to play it serious instead of trying to capitalize on his comedy, he would have made a much better villain. I really think Superman 3 should have been more of an identity movie for Superman. Struggling to find the balance between Clark and Kal-El, now that he's a world famous super hero. Going back to Smallville and meeting Lana and that conflicting with his newfound love, Lois. Which, if Lois had tagged along with Clark instead of going to Bermuda, it would have made the dark Superman aspect more intriguing as we never got to know how she would have responded to his behavior.
This scene is like Superman vs Bizzaro, in a way.
Yeah 3 and 4 for that matter weren't great movies but that doesn't matter to me, just watching Christopher Reeve playing the role he was born to play, and the only man capable of playing the role of Superman was all that matters

This movie may have had it's flaws, but that moment at 3:01 when Clark rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S', and John Williams famous score kicks in has got to be one of the most iconic moments of the entire Superman franchise. If not *the* most iconic moment..
I remember watching this as a kid with my dad, and when dark Superman vanished and Clark did the shirt rip and flew off, I yelled to my dad "He's back!!"

Clark Kent is the Super StepDad(for Ricky) and Super second chance boyfriend(for Lana). More than 30 years have passed, what happened to the kid actor playing Ricky?
Does anyone else notice that as the evil superman progresses his uniform gets darker reflecting his wicked personality?

@Craig J. Davies I have a feeling that, that darkness has nothing to do with his evilness. The thing that it was, was that, as soon as Superman spilled the oil out of that oil tanker, the oil splattered on his uniform.

Wooweekewowwhwiw99hndndujejejjhdhhsbnshshshshsnshe31
Some deeper stuff here than just “What if Superman fought Clark Kent?” Superman gets weaker throughout the fight as Clark gets stronger. I mean, he is taking acid shots to the face and surviving hydraulic car crushers. And Superman’s heat vision even flickers, like it’s starting to fail. Just before he regains control he loses the glasses. And of course, the evil Superman putting Clark in the crusher and then right after crushing the glasses with a look of relief, as if he’s destroyed the good part of himself forever.
It’s also technically a really well done scene. The wire work when he flies into the crusher control room is fantastic.
samurai jack also fought his evil side, that was good also.
This is as close as you can get on a fight with yourself, literally.
When he got rid of his Clark Kent glasses he thought he destroyed his humanity for good. Boy was he wrong. His human side ala the light side prevailed and won

@@djrmonix : Ironically, the geeks will also tell you that it was this very franchise that started that "It's not an S" thing. Marlon Brando wanted to wear the Superman symbol, so in "Superman: The Movie" they changed it from 'S for Superman' to the sigil of the House of El. But only Superman geeks would know that, and I'm not a Superman geek... but that's what they'd tell you.
This fight was referenced in the second episode of Crisis on Infinite Earths

RIP Christopher Reeve. Legend
I always felt this scene, was Not actually saying Superman split into 2, but rather it was his subconscious battling to regain control over the sickness/madness that took over from the kryptonite. And at the end he regained control of himself. Always liked how Reeves did a darker more evil Version of Superman if he was as corruptible as most people would be with that kind of power.
9o9oportunidades 9999óó999o99o9999
+Jaegar Ultima I think as soon as Gus Gorman gave Superman the improper made kryptonite, the improper made kryptonite split his personalities in two where his good self was trapped inside while turning his outer self as evil. Then the evil Superman was getting weaker and weaker and that weakness released his good self out of his bad self causing his bad self to get into a fight with his good self out of anger. Probably even if he didn't get into a fight with his good self, his bad self would have died anyway because his bad self was getting weaker and weaker losing his powers more and more where his good self was getting stronger and stronger.
Man I remember this has a kid Jesus I just got goosebumps watching it back…

I can't believe that this classic scene has so many dislikes. What the hell is wrong with these people?!? This is an epic way to show the clash between his good and evil personas with the eventual triumph of good with the iconic superman theme playing.
I love Christopher Reeve.
My two favourite moments in the history of cinema are a man ripping his shirt open. This and the run towards the camera reveal from the first one.
The shirt rip in this one is goosebumps every time but what makes it greater is the take off from Reeve in the next shot. Of course the greatest movie theme in cinema history helps a bit too. x
the irony is that Clark had to become a little angry in order to defeat his darker self, he had to become that which he was fighting in order to defeat it.
Good point, but I mean even when Clark is choking Superman, he doesnt look pissed, he looks more like he's thinking, "I hate to do this to you, but its for your own good."
Red Kryptonite?
@@nackxy Sort of. It was actually an artificial form of green kryptonite that Gus Gorman cooked up in a laboratory using tar as a substitute for an unknown element on the periodic table. So instead of killing Superman, it had a similar effect that red kryptonite would have.

this scene and the scene in man of steel when henry cavill destroys the worlds engine are probably my favorites in supermans cinematic history. oh him turning back time gets an honorable mention
I remember watching this scene as a kid and being sad that evil Superman died., but being happy that the new Superman fixed everything.
It is a constant battle inside ourselves each and every day that we pray that we overcome the evil that we must face asking God to help us and praying to Jesus to help us to overcome the obstacles in life that we face and becoming the person that we were always meant to be standing up to fight for truth justice and the American way
This sequence is actually the best part of Superman 3, if only the rest of the film had this same tone. If the evil Superman story had been a much larger part it would have made a more interesting if not better movie. Christopher Reeve is outstanding playing both evil Superman and his alter ego Clark Kent, enough to show them as 2 separate personalities.
This is DEFINITELY the best part of the movie. One of my favorite parts of the whole franchise.

It was superb that Superman had beaten his own worst enemy-himself.
Reeve's Dark Superman was kinda bad ass.
He was bizarre and had too many moments of appearing to be in pain for no reason.
super star
...
,,
There was a reason: It was because he was literally fighting himself. Note that he also appeared to shown concern for Kent after the screams coming from the crusher as harmony was drawing closer.. And Kent was also weaker on offense (yet resilient, standing his ground) until the end when he accepted his darkside and throttled/controlled it. Then rebalance was achieved and the two sides were as one again. Awesome message scene.
@Kevin McDougall Technically, dark Superman in this film IS Bizarro. The filmmakers did a great job at bringing that particular villain from the comics to life, but they messed up on how they introduced him by having him originate from within Superman via the flawed Kryptonite.

Well I loved this film as a child. One of my favourites. Still love it now.

In this scene you can see the acting skills of Reeve; he can play more than just Superman, he can also portray his evil - or more human - side as well, all in the same scene. Brilliant stuff.
