- As the 2020 election neared, a group of pastors morally repulsed by American faith leaders urging their congregations to vote for Trump took action - they rented Weird Al Yankovic's old tour bus and traveled for months across the country to urge evangelical voters that the Christian vote is NOT a vote for Trump. VICE followed Robb Ryerse, a pastor from Arkansas who in 2018 ran for Congress as a Republican, to understand why they felt the need to take such drastic measures and see if this personal sacrifice was even worth it.

I thought there was a whole separation of church and state for a reason. Faith is sacred, it doesn’t belong in the realm of politics. It’s not some tool to be weaponized to push forth legislation.
seperation of church and state exists to stop the government from favoring any specific religion over another, thats not whats happening here. this simply comes down to religious people trying to convince people within their own religion what their views are not aligned with the ethics or ideas of the religion. there is nothing wrong with a religious person basing their political views off of their religious beliefs, since your religious beliefs effect your decision making.

Sometimes said truths are another way of controlling a populace. If people are not educated from a primary school level then you will continue to see religion as a dependency for the common folk. It’s perhaps one of the many reasons why it seems like the Democratic party’s truths are cult like empathetic drives. Bring statistical issues in front of them in the case of higher taxes for the rich and they still don’t believe. This quote applies to blind partisan support as well. That should end if we are to work together.

We don't live in a Christian country, we live in a country where the majority of people who claim a religious identity do so as Christians. There is a difference. And there's a reason why elected officials should not impose their religious beliefs on the citizenry. We have deliberate and specific separation of church and state. Only those who are completely ignorant of their own bloody European history would not understand why this is so important in America. That said, of course one should vote their own moral conscience. That's why each person gets their OWN vote.

Here’s a question: if you’re “Pro-life” (legitimately and not just per political rhetoric), why does the pro-life movement focus on the worst case scenario where such a major moral decision has to be made? Why wouldn’t someone who is “pro-life” focus on those things that would PREVENT an unwanted pregnancy in the first place? Birth control, sex ed, day after pill etc. etc. etc. And why wouldn’t someone who is “pro-life” focus on those things that would acknowledge the preciousness of life AFTER birth? Child healthcare, food aid, education etc etc etc.?
I can see having a particular moral position on the subject, but in countries where the above policies are embraced, abortions are very very minimal.

I find the whole enterprise embarrassing. Two groups, both using Bronze Age myths to justify their 21st century voting habits, each trying to convince the other that the creator of the universe wants them to vote for a specific political party.
Good Gaia religious people are deluded on so many issues. And imagine being a single issue voter on abortion of all things? Abortion has been legal for like 50 years and it would take some truly insane events to reverse that, and the “pro-life” position is falling out of favor day by day, as the elderly hyper conservatives literally die off and the younger progressives take the mantle as the largest political bloc.

The best way to reduce abortions are universal health care; eradication of poverty; teaching science based sex-ed in schools; make it possible for single parents to raise children while working and/or going to school by providing free child care, tax cuts/subsidies to parents, and paid family leave for men and women; agressively teaching boys to see women as equal and that it's equally their responsibility to take care of children, and many other things. Even with this, of course there will still be a need for abortion but it would be drastically smaller after a while.

I'd like to commend the great job done by the interviewer here. He took his time exploring some interesting points, particularly on the difficulty many voters experience negotiating the complex interaction between religious beliefs and their moral/social conscience. I especially liked the point raised about the need for voters to expand their understanding of and possible solutions to the abortion issue. Well done Vice and it's journalist.

How are you going to tell a woman what she can and cannot medically do with her body and also be against social healthcare, tf is wrong with those protesters?
I'm not a member of either side of the divided church. Rather, I am a mediator between the two sides. Each side is partly good and partly evil. Letting the mother choose is good, but letting the child be killed is evil. Saving the life of the child is good, but forcing the mother to remain pregnant is evil.
Both sides need to humble themselves before the mighty hand of God and ask Him for the wisdom of what government ought to do with abortion-minded couples, so that they can petition government to do it. If they ask God for that wisdom, then it will be given to them. That's a promise in James 1v5. But they need to ask in faith, so that they will receive the wisdom when it is given to them (James 1v6-7, Mark 11v24).
The wisdom is a bipartisan policy which would cause abortion to stop happening without forcing any woman to remain pregnant. So, it addresses the concerns of each side of the divided church. That's why it is bipartisan, and that's why those of us who have signed the petition for it are mediators between the two sides of the divided church.
It's about time pro-human evangelicals came out of the church closet!!! Bigotry is not Biblical.

@Odonata That is a bit of a loaded statement, and arguments can be made that most religions or at least the abrahamics are born out of some prejudice; but for the most part I wouldn't want religion to completely vanish (even as an atheist). What I wish would take place today is the formation of new religious movements oriented toward newer values and more tolerat stances. Like a "the many fingers of god" mentality towards other religions or a "taking part in the joy of creation" with transgender and transexual people.

Not a religious person in the slightest, but that pastors message on being pro life is probably the most informed and smart explanation of what that realistically means in today’s world, aka advocating social programs, education and universal healthcare - he is 100% correct and that is very much a winning message. Maybe this is a weird take-away to get but what I'm slowly coming to conclude to is that America needs more spiritual leaders. But by that I have something very specific in mind. I mean actual spiritual leaders who aren't going to look at the Church as a way of gaining power and prominence for a political power and instead focus on addressing people's moral needs directly. I really liked what the pastor had to say about looking at the statistics of what actually decreases abortions as the more sophisticated way to be pro-life and protect the most people. I think abortion is one of those very morally grey issues and it's better to address those qualms directly than to mock them because clearly this is a great motivating issue for a lot of people. And that new perspective where he's guiding them to more compassionate stances seems pretty cool. I like that and maybe that's the kind of spiritual leadership our country needs. America is clearly a religious country and maybe what it desperately needs is better spiritual leadership. Or maybe I'm overthinking things.

I may not be religious, but I have found that people who actually believe in Jesus and his message of love and compassion have a lot in common with me. It should be about finding common ground and working together for a better world. I like this guy. I hope he becomes a louder voice and gets more attention than those who spread hate and negativity.

Here's what gets me: The Bible clearly shows that Jesus rejected human Government (John 6:15) We also know that The Father is/has made him a king (guidance from Heaven). So Jesus has no interest in "human" Government but has accepted a position of rule given through Heaven by his Father (Matt. 6:10) . There was never meant to be a "human" Government. Rule was always to come from Heaven. This temporary "human" Institution is a temporary allowance by God so as to establish His right to rule (Gen. 3:15). Even when the first Human king Saul was anointed by God to rule over His people, God said that it was because that "They" (His People), rejected Him (God), so He was appeasing them by doing this and even that allowance was ended when it was no longer needed (Jesus now rules from Heaven). I have never voted for a "human" (they all die), but I always vote for God. That any Christian would place their trust in a "human" gets me. I've read the Bible 3 times and I don't see anywhere where it says to put your trust in another human. It actually says the opposite (Jer. 10:23, Jer. 17:9)... Anywayzzz, I don't get it. (P.S. This probably will not matter to most non believers.) LOL

As the saying goes "a frog in a hole knows of no ocean"! So good to see people such as these stepping up and out into truth, love and hope! I was never able to understand how so many "mainstream" Christians could be so anti-obama when so much of what he stood for, personally and politically, was straight from scripture! Interesting hearing a pastor mention the idea of God letting everyone in, I wouldn't be at all surprised if, in some final act of mercy, grace and love, ALL were redeemed, and that indeed "...every knew will bow and confess...". There is, I think, a great potential of that being a possibility, if not probability, especially when we come to a deeper understanding of who the divine truly is!
Religion needs to stop impacting things that actually matter.

While Jesus was still physically earthbound, He asked the people repent for the kingdom of God has come upon you. He was basically asking the people to choose His kingdom instead of taking sides with either the pharisees or the Sadducees. Pharisees and Sadducees hated each other but hated Jesus even more because His teachings were COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM BOTH SIDES and now they were afraid to lose their high seats and power over the people. So what did they do? They killed Jesus. No matter what political party governs in a world of sin, it still wont bring perfect order. If you are a follower of Christ and His kingdom, dont vote at all and just focus your life wholly to God. The agendas of republic and democratic have only their own interests and not the nation as a whole. The government of God's kingdom has your best interests. Stay out of politics christian folks

Multiple countries in Europe have political parties with Christian in the name. For instance in Germany you have the Christian Democratic Union, so I would say in Europe the very much let religion dictate their politics.

The Democrats just elected Biden, a man who has a 50-year history of expanding the criminalization of drugs and whose running mate, Kamala Harris, kept innocent people in Jail, ignoring evidence, while she was Attorney General of California.
According to Pew Research, there is a right and left consensus on allowing abortion under certain circumstances, similar to how it works in most countries in Europe. Few want a total ban.
