2016 marks the monumental return of one of heavy rock’s most unique, revered and fearless bands of the last three decades, Opeth. Over the years, the experimental, prog veterans have continuously reinvented themselves, pushing the boundaries of their craft and expectations of fans and critics alike.
OPETH’s new album, Sorceress, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band’s imprint label Moderbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album’s opener 'Persephone' to 'The Wilde Flowers' and 'Strange Brew' to the album’s counterpart title tracks 'Sorceress' and 'Sorceress II', OPETH’s twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colors mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly.
Sorceress Track List:
1. Persephone
2. Sorceress
3. The Wilde Flowers
4. Will O The Wisp
5. Chrysalis
6. Sorceress 2
7. The Seventh Sojourn
8. Strange Brew
9. A Fleeting Glance
10. Era
11. Persephone (Slight Return)
”The new album "Sorceress" is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. ”Sorceress” is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!? It’s different! It’s extremely diverse. And if I may say so myself, extremely good. I feel the right to say that since I like to think I know this band better than anyone on the planet. Also, I always manage to detach myself from the record and listen as a fan. It’s a fine little record. My favorite in our discography right now. Of course. That’s how it should be, right? It’s both fresh and old, both progressive and rehashed. Heavy and calm. Just the way we like it. Hopefully there’ll be others around the globe sharing this opinion. It was a joy to make it. A fucking joy to record it, and a sheer joy listening to it. So there you have it!”
For Sorceress, OPETH returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from Queen, Rush and Judas Priest, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The band spent 12 days recording at the countryside venue among its serene and inspiring surroundings. The result is nothing short of a powerful and intriguing record that will add yet another layer to the band’s celebrated career.

Everytime Opeth release a new track I brace myself, they always come out with something original that at first I struggle to chew but then I realise how damn tasty it is.
I personally can't listen to a new Opeth song more than three times and not have its genius stuck in my head. The first go-around does not do it justice at all.
I've never read something that described Opeth so perfectly
Couldn't have put it better myself! Damn true, sir!
Yes sir. This is fun. It's not like they don't deliver on their live shows. Bands evolve. But I do crave a growl from Mikael.

Opeth is a brilliant and exotic, creative band. Like no other.
I guess you have to listen to some Dream Theater 😜
@@Alex-kg6ih I have - they're not about emotion - they're about sport. Music for me is emotion.
@@Cluless02 I think you are wrong but I respect your opinion 😉
@@Alex-kg6ih I think after maybe octavarium a lot of dream theater's music is just technical proggy metal and theres a lot less influence from the 70s prog.
E. F. I feel the exact same about Dream Theatre
You have to be brave as a band to face a new direction like Opeth does. Hats off to these guys
I don't think this music is new, sounds like 70's prog, so there's no risk involve. If you wanna something new and risky, go listen Vektor's 'Terminal Redux'.
I think you're talking about their first 5 albums. This definitely isn't a new direction dude, this is pretty average stoner/prog rock.
Vektor's record sounds like a voivod sequel. It's not bad, but i don't think is thaaat original as well. Not bad, though. My point with Opeth is that you don't see many metal bands embracing a new direction as they did. To be considered death metal to 70's prog sounds a pretty awesome achievement. to me.
Nothing new or brave here.
Shinoteque Or..."Terribly disappointing" as I'd like to say about them nowadays. lol

Like the last two releases, listening to this once may not be enough. After 2-3 listens, you realize it's magical and memorable and won't be able to get it out of your head. Opeth always does something different and inspired, and that is so respectable.
P.S. What's not respectable is the entitled complainers who want their old Opeth back. Mikael already gave you all those albums, and he's writing what he wants to. Respect his right to express his art how he pleases. If you don't like it, don't listen.
Its contradictory saying something needs to be listened to more than once and then saying "if you don't like it, don't listen." I think this song was lackadaisical at best. Should I listen in to it again or not?
Mikael was even going to do a Watershed 2 (which became Heritage) but Mendez said he would be very dissapointed if they did another album of the same shit.
UnitedTroy It warrants a few listens before judging, but the comment was more directed at all the negativity. The negativity is just an excuse to complain but Opeth and Opeth fans sure as heck are not listening
But isn't it a bit ironic to be complaining about complainers... on the basis of musical interests? Some fans like change, some don't. I like Coke, but if one day they change the flavor to something like Dr. Pepper... then fuck that, I'll ask questions about it/gripe and will then find a new drink, lol. It's about "taste"... in regards to Opeth... I prefer the Damnation/Ghost Reveries flavor, but at the same time, I don't feel that the other albums "don't sound like Opeth"... I just don't like as many songs ON those albums. The issue I have is with bands like In Flames or Meshuggah (ironic because of your name lol... I find them to be the biggest offender)... they didn't "evolve", they changed genres haha. In Flames became a rock band (at least for several albums) and I preferred Meshuggah as a slightly detuned, math oriented, thrash band... after Chaosphere that all changed. They broke out the 8 strings and Djent was born. In terms of "evolution"... I'd say that Soilwork is a prime example of how to "tweak" your sound while still sounding "like you used to". Point is... people have different interests and tastes... liking EVERYTHING that a band releases can also come across as "pathetic", but who cares? We honestly shouldn't... if people clicked on this video hoping that the song sounded like they "wanted it to" and it didn't... eh... let 'em bitch. If you like the song and they don't... shouldn't effect you either way because you enjoy the music... nature of the world. We don't all like the same things and like to talk about it.
All true, my point is that no one cares if people don't like the new Opeth. The complaints fall on deaf ears and serve no benefit, and I am calling out the UA-cam complainers are attention whores who do not care that their complaints are not relevant
This is actually the album that got me into Opeth, I really dig it
I enjoy both their old, brutal style and this new psychedelic sound, it is good that they have evolved it is very different from the rest of the music and therefore it is quite interesting to listen to
IDK, just my opinion
Progression or not. I don't give a fuck, I like the way it sounds and that's all that matters to me.
Its still prog bro
holy shit that guitar solo is fucking wicked...
4:13 gets me right in the feels everytime. That infinity riff is so dreamy. The very definition of immaculate.
That solo is absolutely one of Opeth's best moments. This is hypnotizing!
Fucking awesome. Opeth have to be one of the most interesting bands out there right now. Screw the haters \m/
Not very interesting when a band starts to make 70's Prog Rock! Not exactly progressing now is it? More like regression
I believe if Mikael shits in your ears you go: "FUCKING AWESOME! FUCK HATERS! I HAVE NO TASTE REGARDING MUSIC! FUCK HATERS! AWESOME!"
James Netherian
BlackDildoBoyWithDiabetes LovesHorseCock What makes you think its trying to be 1970's music? I suppose you'd like them to be thrashy and shouty :-/
Mikael pours out his musical genius with every album. People who interpret his offerings as him trying to insult or antagonize are delusional and entitled.
I just cannot believe how good this song is. It's a masterpiece. I just discovered Opeth. I'm so glad!
@alexandre trepanier I just went to their EU Tour show 2 weeks ago and it is even better! This is also the best lyrics video ever :)
Listen the garroter = another song another album
Welcome then, I have been listening to Opeth 22+ years now and they are still one of my most favorite bands of all. I can listen to just about EVERY track of theirs
Me too!! Never heard of them before but I like!!
I think I will like the new album, but not as much as the previous ones (more than Pale Communion though) because I feel like it's missing something... It's not the growls or the "softness" of the music, I listened to Damnation and really loved it.
I don't feel the "greatness" and the atmosphere of older songs like Harvest. It doesn't have this "dreamy" relaxing feeling.
But you know, they are evolving and that's great, at least they make something that pleases them and to be honest, the music is good. But I wish it would amaze me like Ghost Reveries did.
Ps : The outro on this song surprised me, in a good way !
Wait until you hear Strange Brew, you'll be in heaven
you cant judge atmosphere of a whole album from 2 songs though. Maybe they will still surprise you. Can't wait to hear this stuff live.....
I've lost the hope about Opeth will ever do a thing like Ghost Reveries again long ago.
Even though Ghost Reveries hooked me, and to this day remains my favorite piece of work by them, I have learnt to love everything they make. Heritage to me was a really nice composition from beginning to end, even if it wasn't to the taste of most of their fans, and Pale Communion to me was quite weak but I have high hopes for the new album, and this song really drives my hope further, because it seems like they are moving beyond the tranquil sound that they have been manipulating and evolving since Blackwater Park.
The way opeth have sang Sorceress some, including this one , songs resembles rap (short lines lyrics) yet its heavy , this song and chrysalis are best song of album.I liked heritage more .
this is the first opeth song I heard. then I forgot about it. a few months later I got into their older stuff and re-discovered this one. now it's my favourite opeth song.
Same
happened to me but my first song was "to bid you farewell"
I love Opeth so damn much. Their ability to write songs extends beyond "good" music, it's out of this damn world - and I have always appreciated their ability to write music that imparts massive feels and makes my chest do somersaults, and not just to write a song that does that on occasion, but entire albums.
I like this new stuff. But...a horrible part of me knows I just "like" it. It's good music, but not a single bit of any of it has made my jaw drop or left me speechless like so, so many songs before.
Opeth are finally trying too hard.
All the people saying RIP will still buy the album, and will be jamming it when it comes out.
It's pretty interesting to hear that Opeth, "Makes music for coffee sipping hipsters now," and then in the following comment seeing, "If you want to hear prog done right, listen to "insert classic/pet obscure prog band here." You're being hipster while criticizing hipsters.

My favourite song on this album. Also, the artist who did the graphic design did a really good job with these lyric videos.
I listen to songs I like. I don't listen to songs I don't like. I love having the ability to listen to whatever I want to. Apparently, judging by the comments, a lot of people are being forced to listen to things they don't like. What a shame... #FreedomOfMusicForEveryone

And so on...
Hahaha, poor bastards... then I remembered some Guantanamo torcher tactics where some prisoners ARE kept awake with some rough music... it's not me, my brain went there :)

Plus lots of opeth fans are like "Opeth best band ever" when they (imo) aren't. they're good but they're a little boring in some songs

I absolutely love how Opeth have evolved, there's not one album yet I don't like. They totally keep their same eerie musical vibes that make them Opeth and the fact that they can make that work even more powerfully through this different style is something I really admire.
Mendez's face in the picture just screams "I did not agree to this".
It does
The way that every song and album that opeth drops is EXQUISITE just amazes me
Opeth: regressive rock
This is the first time I listened to a non death metal track by Opeth and I can confidently say that they still make great music
Listening to this high... I'm honestly speechless
This album is fucking phenomenal. If you're reviewing this album as death metal, then of course it's gonna be shit to you. That's like reviewing Metallica and complaining "this is the worst jazz I've ever heard!!!".
It's good for the genre that it is, which is different from old Opeth, but that doesn't make it _bad._ Just different.
the way opeth changed directions during the past ten years is the same as a human do growing up, fearless and boiling blood inside the veins, and as he grows up he gets wise and mellow.
Thank you opeth for being with me in this journey of life.
Heritage was amazing but pale communion was lame. Where is your god now?
we all should be happy that Opeth is still making music after all these years.Great Band.
The artwork of all the music videos so far are amazing, props!
Catchy as fuck.
My favorite song from the 3 they have released so far.
My favourite is Will o' the Wisp, but this is still great.
Except for Will O' The Wisp :) Love that song
My favorite is A Fleeting Glance.
My favorite is Bleak and Deliverane so far.
Favorite song is all on blackwater park, but out of the three will o' the wisp has been my favorite
Great fucking visuals, befitting a monstrous track! You never let me down ...thank you for that.
I am old Opeth fan and I've loved his growls because they've been amazing but now I think he's clean vocals are better
His cleans are average tbh
I love that solo half way through. And the movement changes are great.
I have yet to find a band that regenerates like Opeth. Every single thing they compose is unique and evolving, and I fall deeper and deeper in love the longer I know them. It has been two decades.
The flurry of emotions and gut feelings are astounding. Long live.
I honestly don't have a problem with Opeth's evolution as a band. Every song is a masterful piece, always so intriguing.
That outro is fucking incredible, the end!
Just today Camel's Lady Fantasy popped up from the car radio and I realized that the chorus of The Wilde Flowers is a reference to Camel's song! Quite a beautiful melody to quote too!
by far, best song i listened to for nearly three years! thank you for creating and obviously sharing such a piece of art.
Came here again after 4 years, have listened like 3 or 4 times this song but today was special. I listened this time with my mom that was a fan of Akerfelt clean vocals.
She digged this album totally.
This, "Strange Brew" and "The Seventh Sojourn" compose the holy trinity of this album. Masterpieces.
It has been leaked a few days ago on the Internet... Don't forget to buy the album though if you download it. :)
A Fleeting Glance is the best song in the album imo. Dat atmosphere!
Yeah! and Sorceress 2 made me jizz in my pants!

What a perfect time of year for this album to be released. Such an awesome vibe with a chill in the air. Loving what I've heard so far.
Opeth will always create good music.
A brilliant song from band who is evolving beautifully. The contrast between the heavy and "light" songs are perfect so far... it's all about what comes out of a musician who is not afraid to change.
As a metal fan of course I prefer old stuff. As a prog and music fan, THIS IS CATCHY AND MASTERPIECE !
Exactly I love both sides of opeth in a different way. Old opeth was very dark which I loved. And new opeth gets stuck in my head on the first listen and never go away. It's been years but Mikhail sings "god is dead" into my head from time to time.
4 years later....still love this album...is this the solo that michael said to fred " what solo would you play if it was your last?"...it sounds like it...fuckin shredding...song is beautiful...haunting....
All these years and I will always come back for that guitar solo, I just can't believe someone can play like that and I am a guitar player but Fredrik akesson is insane
I can't down vote this (or anything else released by them) -- Opeth is *THE* band that got me into harsh vocals and especially black metal. My Arms, Your Hearse was the first Opeth album I listened to back in 1998-99 when I was still in high school... this is the band that eventually opened my mind to it all. Their past few albums, while they are good in quality/talent/production... I just can't get into them.
I saw Opeth in 2004 live with Moonspell. One of my favorite concerts of all time. (Tied with the Brian Wilson show I just saw last week)... they'll always be one of my favorite bands.
Maybe they'll come around to their sound style again musically. Maybe not. Hell, Paradise Lost and Dark Tranquillity both did. (Though, I actually find I like their "goth rock" late 90s albums a whole lot). Either way, I can't fault them for moving onto something new. I just probably won't be a part of it for now.
Needed something like this from Opeth.
the whole album is amazing. listened to it 5 times already and finding something new with every listen. Can't recommend it highly enough
Opeth is never deceiving, another great song and album ! Opeth is on a league of his own, this no other band like you ! Thank you for your creation and artistry !
Can't wait to get my hands on this album.
The whole Sorceress album is a grower. I hated it on the first listen. But everytime I go back to listening to a song from this album, I find something new that I like.
Whoever mixed this album did an amazing job.
Opeth is truly amazing. What I love about this album is that it is not as melancholic as the last 2. The blending of powerful misery and tragedy with keys and modes that are not chronically minor and diminished is true art in my ears. True progressive music is found in its construction and silence as well as complex rhythms and riffs. It is so refreshing to hear an album that doesn't rely on guitar masturbation to be impressive. Opeth is one of the few bands that has ever caused me to have a physical reaction to the music. Mostly crying I will admit but the occasional laugh or gasp when one of their songs surprises me. It tickles the brain.
Beautiful song. This album is going to be amazing.
So far, I love this album!
One of my top 5 songs I can never get over how good it is
So far this one is my favourite track out of the three. I love the vibe, the chorus is catchy as Hell and that transition from the spacy, mellow part into the madness of the ending is exquisite.
I'll admit, after loving Opeth up to Watershed, I skipped their later releases. It just wasn't my genre and I made no drama about it. Now my taste has changed enough that I can enjoy this, and it's great! I missed them! :)
I'm speechless. That was brilliant. OPETH for ever!
That ending.. pure Opeth, amazing quality
1 year later and this album is a classic to me! Opeth fan since Blackwater Park era, love the new stuff
Absolutely Amazing
Best opeth song and album
People aren't forced to listen to anything. But when their favorite metal band keeps releasing 70s prog instead, its upsetting. Fans that have stuck with the band for over a decade now feel forced to dislike their favorite band because it's not their style of music. Opeth doesn't play the sound that blew people's minds with every album anymore.
Growing up, I never had to listen to Opeth songs more than two or three times to start liking it. There were never any "songs I need to skip" while listening to their entire album. As a fan of classic rock more so than metal, Opeth was really the only metal band I listened to because they pulled me in with their balance of mellow and hard. But they threw all of it away and started catering to a new fan base and basically left the fans of their harder side in the dust. It all really feels like it should have just been a side-project. That's what makes fans like me so angry.
I want to still love what Opeth makes these days, but every song they release feels like more of the same 70s prog they decided one day they'd rather be.
Every song just makes me want to go back and listen to their original stuff instead.
Really couldn´t have said it better!
I love Opeth with all my heart. Opeth put out at least three of my ten favorites albums of all time.
I remember listening to ghost reveries for 8 hours the day it was released. Just sitting in front of my stereo and doing nothing else but getting lost in godly music... ;)
Nowadays, I think they lost their yin to their yang. In the past, the silent, soft parts were perfectly balanced with the aggressive parts. And thats what made the songs so epic. You never knew in which direction the songs would take you.
Besides the awful 70s sound, I really think that "new Opeth" lacks in songwriting. Something I thought I would never say in my life...
And by the way: I´m fed up with Opeth fans, who tell me that I´m too dumb to understand the new Opeth sound. It seems to me that many of them fight a "holy war" against anbody who says, that Opeth produced songs which are not pure genius.
Now go ahead people and tell me what a moron I am and that Mikael is inerrant!
Please, I wanna listen similar song written in 70-s

I don't like the last album not bad but not as good as old ones but i don't think another metal album would be good as olders because Mikael didn't want to write a death metal album at the time.
Solo at 2.38 is gobsmacking. Wasn't sure about this track at first but as an old Opeth fan, this is one of my favourites already
Incredible. Absolutely LOVED all 3 songs so far!
Sounds great on my laptop! Sorceress is indeed very muddy and the drums are mixed VERY right in front of you. When I play it on a big PA system, I have to lowcut a bit to even out the mix so the doesn't shake the room to bits. I like the flow of this song, but not the lyrics as much. It doesn't carry me away like the other records. This is very much a statement record, very in your face. Cant fucking wait to hear the rest of the album! Fucking great job guys!
Great vocals, great lyrics, good solo, beautiful "after-solo"part, badass bass line...I'm not a fan of guitar tone and the mix it's unusual for me but....shit, OPETH KICK ASS! \m/
I can't wait to hear this performed live. This song takes the listener on a mysterious journey with lots of twists and turns. Absolutely love it.
from my point as a big fan , the most excited scenes in any "official video" MUST have appearance of band while playing those sweet solos even inside studio , because that makes the song watchable and famous and give it the state of eternity.
