- In this video I'm tasting 4 strawberry varieties:
Earliglow - June Bearing
Mara Des Bois - Day Neutral
Ozark Beauty - Everbearing
White Pineberry - Everbearing

I have grown 19 varieties of strawberries to find the best variety, by far the best is Albion. This type of strawberry produces huge berries that are much better flavored than Ozark Beauty and the insipid but interesting looking pineberry and under the right circumstances will produce almost year 'round. Excellent flavor, enormous size, longest bearing type and very disease resistant.
I'm new to growing strawberries and I was quick to do extended researches, just based on 2 sources, so I bought 50 plants of the Sequoia and Ozark beauty already. After I did more research, then I bought 15 more plants of the Albion variety. I'm planning on buying more Sweet Charlie, Jewel, Eversweet and Seascape. What do you think about those varieties?
@@kqdwills did you buy them ? sweet, jewel n eversweet, i trying to import them to uk but £100 extra for paper so i dont no if they worth it or not
@@TheAstonp I bought Albion, Sweet Charlie, Ozark beauty, Sequoia plants, about 20 plants/ each. Almost a year passed and now I only have some Sweet Charlie and Sequoia left. Since I live in the high desert, strawberries don't grow well here. Some of the plants I bought online weren't in the good shape either when I got them. Almost half of them didn't make it at the beginning.
The first year, I removed most of the fruits to encourage the growth. Some strawberries I got to taste were smaller than the store bought and didn't taste better. So right now I'm planting other veggies, fruit trees... like fig trees, I just started, but I have collected over 40 varieties of fig trees now.
I saw people in Northern Europe grow strawberries easily and productive. I think you can focus on the local varieties than import the new ones, it's not worth it. France and Italy have many excellent strawberries varieties. Many people bought strawberries, sliced the seeds off, left them dried then grow the small seeds from that. They grow true to seeds and produce. It takes a bit longer, but not that much longer, because if you buy bareroot plants, you 'll still have to wait a year to have the best harvest anyway. Buying seeds online is much easier. Right now I saw strawberry plants selling at the local big box stores where I live in California much cheaper than the prices I bought online last year. I saw some Asian YT channels that grow strawberries from seeds in England, if I 'm not mistaken.
Ozark Beauty taste great to me. But sometimes I do get bland berries. Especially after raining
Thank you -- was looking for an opinion about strawberry varieties. Very helpful!
Earliglow is the best in my mind. They have a distinct flavor and I love the weird neck and smooth exterior. Thanks for sharing.
I have been looking for a video just like this so I can pick some new types of strawberries to grow. Thanks x
Thanks! I bought Earliglow and Mara Des Bois, thanks to your video. Wish me luck! I will grow them next week!
I enjoyed this review. Very interesting! I'm going to try the earli glow
Earliglow is my favorite of my three varieties. Flavor is phenomenal! They produce great, runner strong and come early. Hard to beat. Just planted Mara Du Bois this Spring. Have picked over 4 gallons of berries thus far and its not even mid June, thanks to Ealiglow. The jam is excellent from them along with pies. The store bought berries can't be picked at peak ripeness due to stability issues and have basically zero micro/macro nutrient content, translating to zero flavor. Great video, thank for sharing your passion.
Thanks for review.
I was growing a lot June bearing strawberries, but my variety was very unreliable in our area so I started to transition to everbearing strawberries. At the moment I have few Albion plants and last year I already had some strawberries but since it was their first year, they tasted very artificial. This year I tried 2 berries (they were not ripe but I could not wait ;) ) and they tasted much better than ripe ones last year.
Mara Des Bois looks interesting also, I will try to find a dealer who sells them.
And Pineapple strawberry sounds fun :)
I live in Texas, we grew sequoia strawberries the last few years and enjoyed them. This year we are trying ozark beauty. Can’t wait!
How are they doing so far?
Hey Ross met you yesterday u talked me into Vito Socorro black, had a couple questions about fig seeds, I've read that the chances of a tasty fig coming from a seed is 1 in 100, if that's the case are most wild figs in the Mediterranean and Middle East sub par? And was also told if you plant say a Madeira seed you don't get a Madeira tree? Why is that?
Justin. Figs grown from seed will never be true to type. By planting a seed, you just created an entirely new variety. AND not every fig grown from seed will be common. There are 4 types of figs with the species Ficus Carica: Common (what we mostly grow in the northeast), San Pedro, Smyrna & Capri-figs.
It gets complicated even further: Seedlings produced from a persistent caprifig and either (any) type (common or San Pedro or Smyrna) fig result in 25% common, 25% Smyrna, 25% non-persistent caprifig, and 25% persistent caprifig. If a non-persistent caprifig is the male parent, they are 50% Smyrna and 50% non-persistent caprifig.
As for if wild figs will be tasty.. it's a pretty low chance. I don't know exact numbers, but growing from seed is a waste of time unless you're a breeder that really knows what's up.
So that would mean that the majority of Wild figs say from Bird droppings are probably terrible tasting, so finding a tasty wild variety is very rare!
Very interesting! Thanks
Hi,
The Mara des Bois variety is considered as one of the best strawberries although not #1 which is Ciflorette, a French one too.
If you are interested I would be glad to send you a few runners of Ciflorette in exchange of the Erlyglow and Ozark Beauty which are unknown here in France.
Contact me in the fall, Nicolas.
You should try Franberry strawberries. They are so sugary sweet. They are my favorite.
Ross, So many strawberries..... so little time! Now to narrow the list down to just one. My picks based on what is seen online both in flavor and climatic adaptation are "Sweet Charlie" or "Chandler" .....any thoughts on either of these? And a bonus with (most) strawberries is free new plants via runners, some to share with your local friends. BTW another good vid. Randy/GA
I hear a lot of good things about Sweet Charlie. Nothing on Chandler, but I also hear Rutgers Scarlet is great. That will be my next choice for sure.
Ross Raddi How did Rutgers Scarlet do? I’m getting that and Yambu from the Netherlands this year.
Ross, good information. What's more worthwhile to grow, everbearing or June-bearing? Also, don't be offended, but it's pronounced Mah-rah day Bwah. It's French.
Frank. So far I've found that the june bearing are more worthwhile. Although.. I will always have a variety of everbearing for fruit later in the season.
I agree. I started with both. I ended up just keeping the June bearers. I don’t recall the variety I had but they tended to be too soft. If I kept them in the fridge they would get mushy and the flavor was mediocre. Also, they came in at a trickle. My Junebearing strawberries were awesome, really good quality, good flavor. I had a small, shady yard but the strawberries did well. I picked a total of 5 gallons the last year I had them.
I haven’t grown them in years but I’m gardening again, in containers, and would like to grow strawberries next year.
The Mara Bois strawberry actually is originating from strawberry varieties. But right, it is different from other varieties.
Mara "dAy bWah". French.

@@ladysyrus1788 i am so sorry for being late i got 5 pineberry plants online from gardens4you it is shipped to most of europe. And as of right now as the frost is over in my country they are producing a lot of berries from 5 plants but not yet blooming can wait to taste the pineapple flavour on them 😊. Also i live in Ireland
Video wont play
Pronunciation: Mara day bwa
Watching these strawberry tasting tests, adding in the reviews, really confuse viewers. The reason is these tasting tests have very different results, sometimes the opposite of others. I guess the different variety in results caused by the different weathers, or the qualities of soils that they have been growing in.
For example, many reviews rated the Ozark beauty over Earliglow overall on taste. The Mara des Bois have been praised by some people, while others didn't find anything special in this variety.
Still, your tasting test is very interesting to watch. I think it would be more helpful if you can grade them on a scale of 10, on taste, production, etc. Thanks for the review.
Mara des "bWah"
What is the name of this Fruit 😂😂
I know a place where I can get free strawberries but the are tiny and wild.
Where?
des bois = de boa
This is a which verity.
There are 4 varieties there. Mara Des Bois is the one you want.
