My goal was to point out that the entire southeast coast of Florida is the sailfish capital of the world, including Stuart. There is no doubt the sailfishing there is extraordinary. Good call. Capt Mike
Thanks for the reply! Better luck next time I guess. My wife and I are big fans of your magazine and show. We buy every issue and love it! We know how much hard work you guys put into it! We are actually publishers ourselves but on a much smaller scale. We do a community magazine called Neighborhood News and Lifestyles here in the tampa bay area. Between our 5 markets we direct mail 88,000 copies per month and usually do about 200 pages between all of them on 60# gloss text #3 so its actually something nice looking that comes in the mail. After watching all your videos I can honestly say it's helped me a lot fishing. I'm 25 so I have some time to save up but after seeing your SeaVee i'm positive that will be our next boat! Thanks again for all you guys do!
Hi Matt, and thanks for the kind words. Yeah, its funny everyone thinks all I do is fish every single day. I wish that was the case. Please stay in touch...- Capt Mike
I have a penn senator that I would like to set up. With 30lb mono it has a capacity of 300 yards. Would that be enough for an offshore set up? For Sails/Mahi Thanks!
Hi Jose, when you are specifically targeting sailfish, leader should be 6-10 ft. and can be as light as 40 lb or as heavy as 80 lb. 50 or 60 is perfect. Hook size is relevant to bait size/type with 4/0-6/0 ideal for pilchards/herring/sardines and 7/0-10/0 better suited for goggle eye and blue runners. - Capt Mike
RedPeperjack Excellent question, sometimes they appear when you least expect them to, however in most cases we're fishing 70 to 300 ft of water, with 90 to 180 the "real" zone from Miami to Palm Beach. Clean blue water is a must and current is key, if things are just sitting still, no good. The presence of bait and/or birds are also great indicators. Thank you for watching. - Capt Mike
Yes, we freeline baits on the surface with no weight and often fish a couple of deeper baits with 1 to 12 oz. depending on bait size, depth, current, targeted species, etc. - Capt Mike
I've got a 20ft Flats boat, and I wouldn't mind getting out and giving this a shot on a calm day...How do ya'll decide where you are going to start your drifts? Do you just run out until 250-400ft and fish the water column? I'm just not sure where I should run to.
Hey Captain Mike, I trailered the boat over from Tampa and was just fishing here about 2 weeks ago and we had no luck. Just a few small blackfins. We saw a huge sail jump next to our boat but no hookups. What month is best for sails...I've tried a few times and still never caught one lol
Hi Matt, truthfully you can catch a sailfish during any month of the year with the winter months of course marking peak season. Really though, if I had to pick one month it would be April. - Capt Mike
Hey Capt Mike Im from Acapulco, Mexico and Sail Fish is one our favourite fish to catch along with Dorados and we only normally keep one and have different ways to prepare it but i have yet to see any fishing show really talk about how are these fish great to eat and most of them do catch and release?
So what’s a better leader for sailfish? 40# fleuro or 40# wire? I would think King’s would bite through that fleuro and that sailfish wouldn’t go near wire?
When specifically targeting sailfish, we fish 40 lb Diamond Presentation flouro. With circle hooks, you'll occasionally catch a king in corner of mouth but expect to get cut off. With wire, you'll catch the kings and the sailfish will also bite the wire but not as good as flour. Its a trade off. - Capt Mike
Hello my name is Suzie and I'm 14 years old I LOVE fishing from freshwater to salt water. I especially love surf fishing and I have never had the oppurtunity to go sport fishing I almost did but we had too many people in my group so we couldn't go on the charter. My question is do you think that I would be strong enough to reel in one of those big fish? I know or atleast beleive that these fish fight strong so do you think a girl my age could do it.
Also I'm strong than the average girl I work out every other day and bench 115 so all that considered do you think I could catch big fish like sail fish or mahi mahi
soozclues Yes, catching powerful fish is more about tackle and technique than it it is about brute strength, you can catch anything you'd like. - Capt Mike
love your show! always learning from them especially since I only have a 22 ft center console, no kites, and a 5 year old first mate
Update on current CC and development of first mate?
Love the show. Super educational too!
Thanks, stick with it, you'll get 'em! Capt Mike

Sail fish is on my bucket list.
November through April, game on!

The sail in the beginning threw its stomach up.... lol
Common occurrence in an attempt to rid itself of bones/foreign objects, reversible and no harm done to fish at all. - Capt Mike
Thanks man! I'm actually going tommorow
GS Nozer Go get 'em and thanks for watching! - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing One question. Would a penn international and a calstar GFTR-765M be a good combination for 110 pound sailfish, tuna, and marlin.
+GS Nozer A size 20 Intl is perfect for sailfish while a 30 or 50 size would be better suited for billfish/tuna. - Capt Mike
We were drifting over a series of wrecks in 100-200 feet off Pompano Beach. Capt Mike
Thank you for watching....Capt Mike

how long the wire?
Could you make a video showing how you make your deeper water column rigs? I don’t have kites so I would love to know how you rig this spread. Thanks.
Hi Captain Mike, any recomendations on the sea anchor size and brand?
Awesome video Captain, what size circle leaders/hooks were you using? I just bought a 21ft. tidewater and I'm new to boating and fishing. Thanks

Hi Capt Mike, what rig do you recomend to get the live bait deep and how deep do you send it? Thanks.
Hey, how do you find where to catch sails, do you have a certain spot or just go to a certain depth and drop lines?
RedPeperjack Excellent question, sometimes they appear when you least expect them to, however in most cases we're fishing 70 to 300 ft of water, with 90 to 180 the "real" zone from Miami to Palm Beach. What should u look for when ur flatlining for sailfish is it anything below the surface or above
+Adrenaline loose Look for good current and clean blue water in 80 to 250 ft of water. Thanks again for watching. - Capt Mike
Capt. Mike, how much weight did you have on your deep rod and middle Rod? Is the top simply free lined? Thanks.
Yes, we freeline baits on the surface with no weight and often fish a couple of deeper baits with 1 to 12 oz. depending on bait size, depth, current, targeted species, etc. - Capt Mike
Thank you for watching. If I can ever help you with anything, let me know....Capt Mike

Look for clean blue water with the presence of birds, bait, weediness etc. Key depth for sailfish is 80 to 180 ft. - Capt Mike
Great video...was this in the summer?

Mario2876 Are you referring to how good sailfish are or dolphin (dorado)? - Capt Mike
Florida Sport Fishing Sailfish...sorry for the confusion. :)
Mario2876 Dorado is really good too!
Can you make a video or explain how to rig the breakaway sinker.
good idea! - Capt Mike
Hey I fish from a pier in Navarre Florida. If I was spot fishing for sailfish what lure would I want to get for sailfish?
Unless you're trolling, sailfish will rarely hit an artificial lure. Stick with live bait. - Capt Mike
Thanks man. I appreciate it
I forgot. What were ya'll using for live bait in this video?
Thank you for watching, spring season outside Hillsboro Inlet. Capt Mike

we fish #4 wire, yes, dolphin will hit wire also. - Capt Mike

soozclues Yes, catching powerful fish is more about tackle and technique than it it is about brute strength, you can catch anything you'd like. - Capt Mike
What the heck is going on at 14:02? I don't catch a ton of fish, but I can tie a cleat hitch.
How do I catch a ton of fish?
Love me some chaos
Me too! - Capt Mike
when is sail fish season
It peaks across South Florida from Nov - March, but you can catch sails 365. - Capt Mike
No, I'm sorry we dont. Capt Mike
Great “how to” video! Super informative! Come check out our sailfish video we just filmed off Miami!
Thanks for watching. - Capt Mike
Stuart, FL is the sailfish capital of the world. Not "South Florida."
