Microsoft seems to have forgotten that nobody cares about the OS. They just want to run a few apps and browse the web without all the crap, recall, ads, forced Microsoft account, and bloatware mess.

Massive exaggeration. Most people don't care about so called "bloat". As for the account, not really... I've been running Windows 11 for months without ever logging into an account. I've also not sern any ads. If you believe Linux is better than Windows for the masses, youd better sell Linux's fearmtures instead of bashing Windows. And that goes out to all Linux propagandists... you're not doing a good job.

Agree the bloat and spyware isn't a good look, but many of the things prized by linux bros are things normie users do not care about, and that may actively disrupt their experience (e.g. infinite configurability = infinite support scenarios). I'd wager the percentage of Windows users who care about extensive desktop customization vs sensible defaults is the same percentage of people who use Linux at all, about 5%.
The Linux distros that are viable for normie Windows/Mac users are ones that specifically reduce the configurability of the desktop environment and render a limited, comprehensible set of options (Ubuntu+Gnome, PopOS, ZorinOS, ElementaryOS, Mint, Fedora + Gnome...).
ChromeOS (or ChromiumOS/FydeOS) is already a major Linux winner in the Windows exodus because it leans even more in this direction (and layers on reliable updates/immutability, settings and file backups and restore, and robust support...), while embracing another core truth about consumer GUI-mediated computing today: the desktop is primarily a window to the web.
I'm actually working building a ChromeOS-inspired distro/proof-of-concept right now. Linux bros will hate it, but I think it is closer to the right thing for most users.

    • @funkijote
      @funkijote 2 дні тому

@@STONE69_ Where'd you get that 1.3% figure? I've seen a range quoted, but never that. The lowest I've seen is ~2.3% (from GlobalStatsCounter ). I'm working up a more in depth writeup on this as there are so many methodological and measurements issues, coupled with confounding variables (e.g. cyclical dynamic of enterprise/education purchases, that make looking at any 3-year period misleading, but particularly this one shaped by the pandemic).
I'm not pretending to know what is happening with certainty, but Linux-enthusiast commentators are almost certainly overstating the significance of the Statista/GlobalStatsCounter data they're all harping on. What I can convey briefly and in broad strokes here, hopefully without muddying the water too much/earning the ire of my fellow Linux enthusiasts, is that most of the recent growth in consumer desktop linux is SteamOS, with this growth in "desktop linux" happening over a period in which desktop computer demand slowed generally (including laptops in this definition).
Simultaneously, a large number of ChromeOS, MacOS, and Windows (hereafter "incumbent desktops") devices aged out of support, and weren't replaced like-for-like (yet, that is, and this is one place where the enterprise/education purchase cycle story figures in). Linux has likely benefited from a device life-extension influx from desktop incumbents, but is a far second to folks opting post-incumbent to suffice on (and increasingly preferring) phones and tablets as their primary (or only) computing devices. That is, it's mobile eating incumbent desktop market share much more so than Linux, and to the extent that it is Linux, its mostly mobile-ish Linux (i.e. SteamOS).
As for ChromeOS, the end-of-life/upgrade-cycle dynamic has impacted its market share in the short term much more so than the other incumbents because of Google's historical supported device life of 3-5yrs (with an unprecedented number expiring at once the past two years), but is likely less of an issue going forward for consumers as post-2021 devices promise 10-years of OS support.
All that is to say, I wouldn't bet against ChromeOS, it continues to gain in education and enterprise (more so than Linux even amid its recent slowdown), and is on track to ship 20+ million units this year (amid continued weak consumer demand for desktops/laptops in general) but as a new enterprise cycle kicks-off we could see 50-60 million between 2025-26.
ChromeOS grew in an unrealistic/unprecedented way because of emergency education purchases during the pandemic coinciding with an ordinary upgrade cycle, but now it is settling back to its more regular growth pattern which looks disappointing only by comparison with its unprecedented 2022 peak. One big liability is ChromeOS devices do need to deliver considerably better hardware/price-performance to continue to win consumers purchasing for themselves in 2025.
Sorry for the essay, obviously half just sorting this out aloud, I expect next year will bring more clarity....

Can I pirate games? Yes! And with better compatibility for nostalgia games.
Made the change in a day, installed Arch Linux on a Nvidia AMD Dual GPU system with ease, installed all I need in a single line of code and booted my game which I thought I would need to reinstall. Nope. Lutris really is carrying the weight when it comes to bringing new people into linux.
Oh, and steam epic games etc. work too. Who uses those these days, we are headed towards a future where buying isn't owning, so better set sail early and be ready when your only option is setting sail. Still, a plus for Linux.

@STONE69_ What do you mean "every time they say so" ? Windows 11 is the first time there has been a strict requirement around CPU generation, but it doesn't stop one from installing it on older hardware. People are doing it. And anything newer than say 7 years old should be fine, typically. Most hardware is upgraded that often anyway. Yeah, if you have some really old stuff sitting around, then yes, Linux would be an option, but only for those users for which Linux is useful. For most people, that won't work. And it's not thousands of "dollars every time". I have never payed thousands of dollars for a PC, and I've never replaced a PC because MS told me to. You've basically presented a strawman. And the thing about selling off your data is a lie being propagated by haters. There is no way corporates would be using Windows if there was personal data being gathered and sold off. That would be totally illegal and woukd jeopardise the corporates in terms of privacy laws. For example, the claim that MS is screen-shotting desktops to gain secret user info is a blatant lie, but the claim is being spread around by Linux fanboys.

I think Microsoft forgot that they got into the game cause of being "user friendly" windows. If they don't do that anymore. People will not have it anymore! Its just that really its simple logic that people would more away from a non-user friendly environment to a pro-user friendly environment. People want flexibility and breathing room. If you choke people into a corner it just won't sell or even become popular enough to even become popular to people.

With Windows, it is never guaranteed to be able to work directly. I am the manager of a small business and I changed my habits to work with Ubuntu every day on PCs. 6 months of testing and full transition in September 2023. 5% is something but it's a very very loooong way to any significant number. Windows is still the king. A lot of hardware still doesn't work with Linux or it is very difficult to set up, and especially cheap hardware that hurts the most. And by the way, you say it's a good thing you need to know the inside details to set it up: do you know in detail how your TV works? Can you fix it if it has a problem? What about your washing machine? And how about having to fix your fridge while your food spoils every single second that it doesn't work. So yes, IT HAS TO WORK OUT OF THE BOX. and that's the majority of us that have a job and no time to dedicate to one single device.

    • @ChiefGyk3D

Most people using a Steam Deck don't realize they are using Linux. Most people using an Android don't realize they are using Linux. Linux works in a lot of things out of the box from DVRs, streaming boxes, and more. More vendors are shipping it as an option as well. Dell, Lenovo, and HP all do. There's a TON of cheap hardware that runs on Linux, like Raspberry Pi a full computer for a mere $35 distributed amongst students in schools very often. You'd also be shocked to see how many cars and devices you use actually are using a form of Linux. Servers, including the runs running UA-cam are primarily Linux.
Also TV's are a really bad example, they are designed to be disposable these days. Washing Machines and Fridges there are tons of appliance repair stores and can easily be fixed with little know-how.
Windows may be dominant... for now. But more and more are getting tired of Microsoft and it's becoming easier than ever to switch. As I said there are tons of people buying a Steam deck and enjoying gaming on that as an example.
