Thank you guys so much for sponsoring me! When I started playing I never thought this could ever happen or even thought of this as a possibility. I hope I can make you guys proud!
You've already made all us nerds proud, especially the old nerds who have been playing Tetris since before you were born, and have never beaten the game. Great job!!
God damn! She's now the new "you didn't know these were the same person". Move over Hank and John. I watched the Film videos so many times, they were great!
So I have to put it out there that playing past the kill screen is even harder than John makes it sound. I'm sure he's aware and wanted to keep the video brief but level 29 speeds (aka kill screen speeds) are when the blocks start falling every frame. At 60 frames a second the pieces are falling 60 blocks a second. The board is 20 blocks tall giving you literally a third of a second to place each piece while rolling. Rolling isn't some magic movement method that just lets him move the pieces, he is tapping the back of the controller into his thumb at 25 to 30 taps a second. He is doing that for each piece in a third of a second. The pieces in NES Tetris are completely random (unlike it's modern counterpart which has the 7 bag system) and stacking is unbelievably hard to do already without having no time to think. And he is doing all this over and over and over again for roughly 30 minutes. Scutti is an absolute legend for this. Much love to John and Hank for sponsoring him and bringing more light to the NES Tetris community because it's a cool community. (As a side note 2 other players have crashed the game since he did Fractal and PixelAndy both very good players!)
Close but it's only 1/3 of a second. Three times faster than 18, at a full second. And roughly half again 19, at half a second. 18: full second (1 block) 19: half a second (2 blocks) 29: 1/3 a second (3 blocks) I don't know if you could even see 60 blocks a second. Like think of milliseconds on a stop watch... 😶 That would actually be super human...😊😊😊
Calling it a clone isn't really true. While it looks quite similar, there are several ways it is refined over the US original. The boosters are liquid fuelled, rather than solid, meaning that they can be shut down in the event of an emergency, such as in the Challenger disaster. It could also be flown autonomously, removing the unnecessary human risk and financial cost of flying every mission with a crew. However, it didn't reuse the engines, as they are attached to the core on the Buran. There were some interesting proposals for further developing the Buran, such as adding fold out wings to the side boosters so that they could glide back to a runway (these weren't parachuted, as they launched over a desert, not an ocean). In the end, the program was cancelled after 1 launch, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, and there wasn't enough of a low Earth orbit launch market to justify the Buran.
My favorite part about this moment is actually his rival's reaction, which was pure unabashed joy! "He DID IT!!", erupted out of him, accompanied by a face splitting grin! I love seeing communities that see competition between their members as a drive that lifts them all up.
@@rissviewer Yeah, that part def shows exactly what kind of nerdfighters these awesome players alrdy are at heart. It’s so amazing to see a game I love being legitimized in this way 😭
CTWC does actually have a bunch of sponsors. The Tetris Company itself (I think they put $10,000 into the prize fund, which increased to $20,800 after crowdfunding) and then a bunch of gaming companies. The sponsorship covers operating costs and enables them to pay for top players' travel and accommodation to make sure they can be there if they can't afford it themselves.
This is amazing. We got our name ‘nerdfighters’ from retro video game so this is exactly the kind of thing we (I guess you as you paid for it) should be doing. Always love to see someone being unironically enthusiastic about something. We don’t always have to save the world Just brilliant old school awesome.
This is more than good exposure for Complexly, in a way it validates the effort these kids put into games. This kid got crap off a news reader, saying he should go outside and play, or something like that but an educational company sponsoring him show’s they don’t think it’s a waste of time. It’s more of an indication of the kids dedication and persistence, and that’ll get channeled into other things later in life.
While it's good for kids to go outside and play, that comment by the news reader was extremely rude. Especially since this kid's dad passed away shortly before this happened. He even dedicated the win to his late father.

Hello John, I've been watching your content since I was a very young person, and I am no longer a very young person. Checking UA-cam to see what you have posted has been part of my routine for years, and some of your videos (like "Perspective," "I Kind of Hate Batman," and your frank discussions of mental illness) have fundamentally changed how I see the world. I still describe my creative headspace as Cheyenne, Wyoming because of you. (I even went to Cheyenne! It's a lovely town) What with all of the UA-cam retirees this year, and your own discussion of your place in UA-cam, I've been kinda dreading the Vlogbrother's End Screen. We all know it will come eventually (All moons are temporary), but that doesn't mean I'm looking forward to it. But with that said, after you mentioned at the start of the year that your uploads may not be as consistent as they once were, my own feelings towards the channel have started to change. I still log in on Tuesdays and check my subscription feed, but instead of expecting that you will have made a video, I instead feel grateful when I see one. It's like, "How nice. John wanted to make something for us this week. What a nice thing for him to do." I hope that when this channel reaches its end screen, it is something that you and Hank choose together rather than something that is chosen for you. But I hope that you know that until that point comes, people like me will see your uploads and think, "How nice. John wanted to make something again." Whether you retire tomorrow or years from now, I'll always be grateful for the things you've chosen to make for us. I hope you know that.
I clicked on this video so fast!! What a surprising and also not at all surprising turn of events!! I heard about him breaking Tetris on DH&J, thanks for including the footage in this video! DFTBA!
I haven't cried this much about Tetris since the Anthropocene Reviewed episode about it. That kid will always be the first to beat Tetris. No one can ever take that away from him. It's incredible and beautiful and powerful.
I just finished listening to the recent episode of Dear Hank and John where John tells more in depth about this boy winning Tetris. I actually cried when he told it. Just beautiful.
Thanks for your continued support of the scene (and Hank for this idea!). Willis is so deserving of this recognition and is a wonderful member of our classic Tetris community. Can’t wait to see how he does at the Classic Tetris World Championship in Pasadena this June!
Awesome move Guys, As a huge Classic Tetris fan this is beautiful to see. Couldn't happen to a nicer kid. I watched his amazing set against Myles at the Texas Regional. Great to hear you are sponsoring him. Wish I could afford to sponsor Dog and Andy, Classic Tetris Esports to full effect.
My 9-year old son started watching Blue Scuti's livestreams after hearing about the 13-year old's win on DH&J last week. It has sparked an interest in a game he had previously found kind of boring. Thanks for helping inspire the next generation, John.
You should also sponsor CTM! We need ongoing sponsors to help pay editors and continue this amazing monthly Tetris competition, and also an ongoing sponsor would help legitimize CTM as an actual company and not simply nerds playing Tetris
This is a really cool marketing lesson. Who we speak to as a company is so important and who we choose to support is just as important. Well done, John and Hank and go complexly!
0:31 lil’ correction: The NES version of Tetris was actually programmed by Nintendo R&D1 in Japan, and it bears little to no resemblance to the original version made for the Electronika 60 home computer.
Kid deserves all the praise! Amazing how many people I saw hating on a literal child when his accomplishment made the news. It's so funny and delightful to me that he is sponsored by Complexly now.
Let's go John and Blue Scuti! I've been a huge fan of Vlogbrothers and Tetris for the past couple years and I'm so excited to see your continued enthusiasm for the Tetris community.
I watch that channel that makes tetris news updates. Not often enough too recall their name but long enough now to recall tetris news before the killscreen was broken. It's been a wild ride that remote interest of mine, but nothing could prepare me for John being a massive tetris nerd who watches streams live and then sponsors players. I love this timeline. Having just enough context on my own to properly appreciate what you two are doing here.
Hopefully you guys did this in a way that satisfies the NCAA Name, Image, and likeness rules, so that when he goes to college he will be allowed to continue to do this and maybe qualify to compete where ever he chooses to go. Which by the way, maybe we need to make sure he gets into a school that suits his needs and desires.
I've been following the classic Tetris community for years and this is wonderful news. Blue Scuti must be thrilled! Can we expect you to vlog your player's progress at the upcoming world championship in June in California (moving there for the first time)?
John, this is just so awesome! I am so happy that you are able to showcase the amazing things that Complexly is doing while supporting a young person that is just getting started. As always thank you and Hank for all that you do! 😊😊
I am actually crying. I was pretty early to the news of Blue Scuti's achievement however I was not there to see it live; I did however replay the moment several times and watched his peers beat his record. I'm so glad for him. I know that he can't really earn from Twitch streams because he's young? So this sponsorship is more than just silly--it's really, really helpful. I'm glad for him.
Thank you for explaining this to me. I told my husband that I was sure I had beat Tetris as a kid on my Game Boy, I remember the shuttle and space ship. So, I didn't understand what this was about. Go Willis! Being able to figure out how things fit together has honestly been more helpful in my day to day life than almost anything I learned in school. You will go far!
I've been singing the Tetris song with the choir and orchestra I cofounded: The Video Game Symphony, and all I have had in my head is "The Man who stole the Tetris Piece." So thank you for that!
oh man that's wonderful! I was watching THE game in replay on the next day (UA-cam pushed really hard on me) but without the context that he is trying to crash it so I was totally confused by the ending ;) Had to dwell into the history of last few years of Tetris competitions to understand the achievement, as last competition I was following rolling Just appeared! It's amazing what those kids have done in just a few years! Sponsoring bluescuttiis such a power move by you two)
2012 - "Crash Course will be here to help educate those who desire to learn!" 2024 - " Complexly is proud to annouce our latest endeavour is to provide sponsorship to this Tetris player who has has defeated the undefeatable concept of an endless video game" 2036 - "With our recent purchase of the entirety of Oceania, we are thrilled to reveal to you all we have begun work on raising Zealandia from the depths to provide the world with its 8th continent"
My partner told me the news of this kid and the first thing I said was "Awe! John will be so happy!" and you already knew. Haha. Love it. This is amazing.
I'm a little sad my money isn't going toward this sponsorship but I'm happy he's being sponsored. That was some amazing footage and I didn't see it live but I did hear about it pretty soon after it had happened. Thank you, Complexly, for the sponsorship!
Not to add a dark layer to this story, but I have seen a lot of stories about Blue Scuti's triumphs, but most coverage doesn't mention that Willis's father had past away only a couple of weeks before this happened. I love that the people I support support people like Willis.
This was 100% the kind of news I needed right now. Had a kind of stressful day with some really-not-all-that-funny anxiety spikes (for very little reason but that's anxiety for you), and this little piece of wholesome awesome news just gave my brain exactly what it needed. Actually tearing up a little
God I love your enthusiasm for real real human shit. Reminds me of my reason for living and loving and stuff. And I got reminded because John talked about a kid playing Tetris real good. Good stuff, good stuff.
There's a super cool documentary-style UA-cam video by agamescout about this :D as a non-tetris human, I thought it was so interesting. It goes into stuff like how the set color combos start breaking in the code after you surpass certain levels, so the community refers to them with names like twilight and lychee milk tea
I was just going to say this! As someone who knows nothing about Tetris, I thought it was a really fascinating and informative video. I like that it breaks down the history and the actual play through!
This popped up in my feed a few days late. I missed Blue Scuti making history, but I was there with John when Fractal and PixelAndy got their crashes too. The classic Tetris community is so wholesome it fits in with the Nerdfighters like a perfectly timed long bar into a Tetris-ready right well!
This just made my day. Thank you, both you guys, and all the folks that work for you. This was the sunny little pick-me-up I needed on a dark wet wintery day.
I second someone else's comment to sponsor CTM, the monthly competition, and think it would be fun to sponsor other things/creators. Someone who's exploring/explaining the insane math behind crochet; a robotics team, like for book promo; etc
Also, whats most important is that your supporting a kiddo with an awesome company! You are supporting a kid that is just amazing in all the best ways and giving him a chance to inspire others. As you guys know, its not about the money, but the impact you have on the community with what your companies do and you backing him is helping more young people learn about so much more eventually!!! Awww! I love you guys!!!
THat's great news ! I was so proud when you mentioned you were watching the livestream when it happened on the podcast, and I am proud to support complexly knowing you are now sponsoring blue scuti !
I love this SO, SO much, especially after listening to you guys talk about it on the most recent Dear Hank & John. It was definitely a must share episode because of this story.
on the interesting coloured levels (some are very hard to play especially on that speed): from level 138, a byte overflow causes tetris to load color palettes from unrelated areas of memory, creating unusual and unintended game piece colors. i think that is so so cool
As a person between Hank and John years old who has once got above 290,000 points in Tetris on an NES and an old CRT TV... that moment seemed like such a big deal that my roommate's words were "you were so in the zone that I swear you were hovering six inches above your chair" all I have to say is... amazing. Blue Scuti is a true athlete, and I congratulate and applaud Complexly on the sponsorship!
Thank you guys so much for sponsoring me! When I started playing I never thought this could ever happen or even thought of this as a possibility. I hope I can make you guys proud!

I love this “lovely silliness”! Way to go Blue Scuti and Complexly!
Not sure why this made me tear up this morning, but I love this so much. You all are amazing!
Does it help or hurt to know that Blue Scuti's father had passed away a few weeks before this happened and Scuti dedicated the achievement to him?
Glad to know I'm not the only one weeping
Ive just realized that i love watching people play tetris. The way the blocks fall and how theyre arranged is very mesmerizing to watch
this is so wholesome, I remember listening about the world record on the last dear hank and john
Watching Willis absolutely lose his mind over that was just about enough to make me cry. Seeing someone so full of joy fills me with so much joy

Let's go John and Blue Scuti! I've been a huge fan of Vlogbrothers and Tetris for the past couple years and I'm so excited to see your continued enthusiasm for the Tetris community.
I love that nerdfighteria is almost 17 years old but the core value of unironicly loving what you love is still at the heart of it all. DFTBA
So happy to see a top player in this game get some real recognition. Maybe more of us will follow if we're lucky. Nice vid john!
Given everything we know about John and Hank, how did we not expect this
I am actually crying.
Just FYI, re: the Tetris endscreen: The picture is of Saint Basil's Cathedral, which is not the Kremlin nor is it in the Kremlin.
A beautiful moment, beautiful partnership. love to see it
There's something so wonderful about seeing the pure joy of someone who's finally accomplished a massive goal like this. ❤ I wept 😅
Sponsoring bluescuttiis such a power move by you two)
This news just confirms my opinion that the Classic Tetris scene is the most wholesome gaming community out there.
2012 - "Crash Course will be here to help educate those who desire to learn!"
2024 - " Complexly is proud to annouce our latest endeavour is to provide sponsorship to this Tetris player who has has defeated the undefeatable concept of an endless video game"
2036 - "With our recent purchase of the entirety of Oceania, we are thrilled to reveal to you all we have begun work on raising Zealandia from the depths to provide the world with its 8th continent"
I hadn't considered the existence of a wholesome sponsorship until now, but this definitely qualifies
Actually tearing up a little
This is *beyond* awesome. Go, Willis, go!
Oh John, I have had such a bad day. This is EXACTLY the video I needed!!! Thank you John and thank you Hank
God I love your enthusiasm for real real human shit. Reminds me of my reason for living and loving and stuff. And I got reminded because John talked about a kid playing Tetris real good. Good stuff, good stuff.
just noticed bluescuti wearing a complexly shirt at ctwc qualifying and how did i miss this video? very cool!
Yay!!!!!! I'm such a fan of this whole generation of Classic players, and I love that a community I'm part of is supporting one of them. 😊
I love it! And to be clear, as a Patron, I am in NO way concerned about how you utilize the income. Y'all are amazing. Thank you.
I’m so excited you made a video and are also sponsoring bluescuti- when I heard this news, the Vlogbrothers were the first people I thought about
I LOVE the fact that my favorite creators and their company complexly are sponsoring the one who defeated the "Tetris Man who throws pieces"
I love the guy who was the second person to beat the game too, he is such a good sport, he watched the stream and supported the effort❤
I started crying with joy when y'all showed the clip of him getting the crash
Feels like an Anthro Reviewed Episode
That’s so sweet!!! I love how sweet you guys are.
This just made my day. Thank you, both you guys, and all the folks that work for you. This was the sunny little pick-me-up I needed on a dark wet wintery day.
I can’t wait for the AGameScout vid on this
Man, Blue Scuti's play is *mesmerising.* I couldn't take my eyes off it
I LOVE seeing you guys support him. You’re awesome!
Given your love of Tetris, i thought a video on this news would come eventually, but was not expecting this.
I second someone else's comment to sponsor CTM, the monthly competition, and think it would be fun to sponsor other things/creators. Someone who's exploring/explaining the insane math behind crochet; a robotics team, like for book promo; etc
boom tetris for john
Boom indeed Fred...
This is insanely wholesome thank you John
This is awesome. Thank you for sponsoring Willis. He truly is a remarkable young man.
I love everything about this. Yay Willis! Yay Complexly! Yay Hank and John for continuing to find ways to make the world more awesome!!
on the interesting coloured levels (some are very hard to play especially on that speed): from level 138, a byte overflow causes tetris to load color palettes from unrelated areas of memory, creating unusual and unintended game piece colors. i think that is so so cool
My brother is a gamer and I know how seriously he takes his craft, props to this kid!
That's awesome haha. I love that Complexly is getting more exposure!!!
This just puts a smile on my face that I can't appropriately convey in words.
I've gotten Hank's song stuck in my head several times since the news broke, so this feels so perfectly fitting!
Hank and John are astonishingly awesome people supporting awesome people!
I love EVERYTING about this!
This is so fantastic! Watching that young man break Tetris, and his reaction, brought me joy. Thank you for helping him! ❤❤❤
