I think the alla turca was about Grade 5-6 when I learnt Piano😂 Grade 8 meant a Baroque contrapuntal style, a sonata movement, and a tricky Modern Piece to me, but not now anymore 😅
I’m so surprised to see Joe Hisaishi’s piece in the selection as I love Ghibli’s movie soundtracks very much, thanks for sharing this, a very good guide for me as I’m preparing for the exam❤️
I agree with A1 B1 C2. Those are definitely the best pieces. I’m hoping to do my exam either 2025 or early 2026. I just started the syllabus with all a turca
tbh i dont agree with a1 and b2 because too many people will choose these pieces, it doesnt mean it is not good but minor error will be deadly in these pieces because the examinar heard too much is these years lol
I thought I'd take up piano again on retirement after 45 years of not having played it. Got a straight pass in grade 8 all those years ago when I got merit in G2-7. I bought the 2023-24 G8 syllabus, tried one piece "Over the Bars" by James Johnson and thought S--t this is diffcult. I used to play Maple Leaf Rag for fun when I was a teenager, I thought it's around G6-7 standard, certainly a lot easier than Over the Bars. And Rondo alla Turca and the B3 Liszt piece look perfectly manageable, will aim for entering the exam in 2026. Someone else below already commented on the error in bars 59 and 60 of Maple Leaf Rag, that hit me instantly.
It’s true that the 2025-2026 pieces are much easier than the 2023-2024 grade 8 exam piece , especially the 2023-2024 C3 piece Over the Bars was the hardest and I picked it 🤦🏼♀️
I watched this whole video knowing im only grade 5 and not gonna get to grade 8 before 2027, which means I am missing out on my fav piece (Maple leaf rag, and im also sad about missing A1) 😭😭 At least i can practice it in my spare time haha
20:56 Left hand, bar 59: The notes should be Gb not G natural, you’re playing the chords of Eb major but it should be Eb minor. Right hand: Same as the left hand, basically all G naturals that you’re playing should be Gb 👍 I play this piece a lot so I know how it sounds like lol, btw I think I’ll pick A1, B1 and B3 sounds good so I’ll have to decide between them and def C2!
I'm suprise that B1 pieces happens to appear in one of the ABRSM grade 8 pieces for 2025 - you play wonderful and it makes me want to watch the film. I might consider choosing this as my piece for exam. Usually among previous year, the pieces are based on chopin, mozart etc...
This has to be my favorite of all grades. Three of our familiar pieces are featured in this grade 😭 Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca, The Maiden with Flaxen Hair and Maple Leaf Rag 😭
@HampsteadPianoAcademy A1, A3, B3, C3. I'll still go for Trinity, though & focusing more towards the classical one. They have wider choices and best part they reuse their pieces 🥰
I had to suffer through grade 8 2023 syllabus when I could've just wait for this!! maple leaf rag is the only valid one and I still played it in grade 6 with more speed
Thank you very much for playing! You made it look soo easy, which helps me to go on practising and one day in the future, play the exam for Grade 8 too! Many greetings and blessings from Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands! 😁🙋♀️⚘️🌷⚘️🦋🎹🎼🎵🎶
@@HampsteadPianoAcademy i lost the right to pick a color with the arrogant tone in my comment, but any higher-contrasting colour would be appreciated:)
Maybe a darker yellow. It turns out my favor for low brightness + the true tone colours activated at all times don’t help me out and it really is a me problem
What prey is the full name of the instrument you are teaching. How about echos is the alla turka. I just about hear the f as louder. Nothing is quiet anywhere. Wouldnt the start of thje second piece be beautiful if it was mp. I cannot guess the dynamics you are attempting . Exams dont get good marks if dynamic range isnt present. The full use of the piano is more important than strikct ahearence to markings .
@@ngcpiano No just play with dynamics. They are an essential part of the music. No piano performance is complete that doesnt at times peak lower than 55db* (a strong p) and sometimes higher than 80 (a subdued but clear f) For nearby audience. This is all on one level and a very bad message for candidates
@@James-io8lj The person who is playing is trying their best and it's not easy recording all the grade 1-8 pieces perfectly. I understand that we need dynamics for the exam but this video is just a guide, like a starting point and you can improve your pieces from there
Wait, this is grade 8?!!! Teachers are probably gonna focus more on playing passionately because of the easier pieces. But even as someone who only has 1 year experience, this seems oke comparred to pieces i played like vivaldi Winter arr by Rousseau and the succession theme arr by karim kamar.

I’ve got that same feeling
I think the alla turca was about Grade 5-6 when I learnt Piano😂
Grade 8 meant a Baroque contrapuntal style, a sonata movement, and a tricky Modern Piece to me, but not now anymore 😅
Rondo Alla Turca was one of my G8 piece 30 years ago 😂
People say this every year it annoys me so much
It’s true I would have got distinction if I didn’t take grade 8 LAST YEAR
Had to re look at the title to make sure this was grade 8 and not 6
That much difference? I guess you went though the grades some time ago?
I’m going from grade 6 to grade 8 and let’s just say there is a difference
Grade 8 is much harder. I just took my grade 6 exam 2 years ago and grade 8 have a big difference with grade 6
I’m so surprised to see Joe Hisaishi’s piece in the selection as I love Ghibli’s movie soundtracks very much, thanks for sharing this, a very good guide for me as I’m preparing for the exam❤️

JOE HISAISHI????????!!! IS THAT JOE HISAISHI THE MASTERMIND THE GENIUS OF STUDIO GHIBLI MUSIC????? oh im buying this instantly

There’s a few of Joe hisaishi in this syllabus, like grade 5, there is the village in may, etc.
Yup and there is also Always With Me in grade 3 ❤
A1 B1 C2 Best Selection... Skipping grade 7 for this one. 🗣🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥

A1 B2 C2 for me, a slight alter but I love the style of C2.

lol, that’s me who commented about the maple leaf rag
What I hear : Flight of the bumble bee
What Grade 8 pianists hear : Twinkle Twinkle little star
What it actually is : Alla Turca

just did my grade 7 exam!! thank you for this ❤
Yeah! Hope it helps! Which are your favorites pieces ?
CONGRATULATIONS!
SUPER! You bought the book of Grade eight, already? Good luck!
Quite a bit of wrong notes for B2...
It’s not just the note, you also need to do the other staff in order to achieve is best result
Come on Rondo alla turca is no way grade 8. Bizarre
yep, pieces getting easier..
B2 is absolutely amazing👏👏 can’t wait to do this next year

Is this really eighth grade I don't think so these pieces are of 8th grade these seems to be of fifth or sixth grade

Watch the alternative list - maybe your favorite ones are included there and you can also pick it in a future syllabus :)
For Alla Turca, how do you play the octaves so cleanly? I can't stretch my hands out to do that many octaves for my life ;-;
Practice just the thumb voice with your right thumb only
It’s only octaves? How can your hands be that small
20:56 Left hand, bar 59: The notes should be Gb not G natural, you’re playing the chords of Eb major but it should be Eb minor.

in the abrsm exams are we expected to play the repeats in the pieces?

Nope grade three def not but g5 maybe🤷♀️

For this year, yes, they are visibly getting easier..
Easy to get pass but difficult to get distinction
Which 3 pieces would you choose?
I’m doing grade 7 next year but I am 11 like 2024 and I can play Turkish march so I wanna do the grade 8 exam!! :(
12:45 just for me
