This animation depicts an example of open abdominal surgery leading to a nicked artery and compromised blood flow. It begins with a superior view of a patient prepared for abdominal surgery. The abdomen is opened and the bowel is retracted to the side. An inset shows an oblique view of the vertebrae and spinal cord to show the path of blood to the spinal arteries. It is demonstrated that cutting into the retroperitoneum can result in fibrosis or a nicked spinal artery leading to decreased blood flow to the cord.
