  • Are you experiencing abdominal or groin pain after having abdominal surgery? Maybe you've gone back to your surgeon or talked to medical providers and they're not giving you answers or suggesting it's just scar tissue. In this video, we'll talk about what scar tissue is, how it can affect your organs, and what you can do to relieve your pain.

Scar tissue is a normal part of the healing process after any surgery. It's like a cobweb that forms internally and can adhere to different things in your body, including organs. This can cause all sorts of organ-related pain such as general abdominal pain, bladder issues, bladder frequency or retention, ovary type pain, and urologic issues.
If you've ruled everything else out and you think it could be abdominal scar tissue, you could try working on it yourself by doing some light abdominal massage around the abdomen. However, from our experience, this usually needs the skill and care from a good pelvic floor physical therapist who knows how to treat holistically.
As a practicing pelvic floor physical therapist for about 20 years, we specialize in treating scar tissue at our clinic. There are different techniques that pelvic floor physical therapists can use, such as ways to elongate and break up the scars.
If you live in the Philadelphia area, you can give us a call or visit our website. If you don't live in the area, we encourage you to find a pelvic floor physical therapist who also understands orthopedics, especially if you're having joint pain. You can also visit our website and shoot us an email if you need help finding a physical therapist.
Don't let abdominal scar tissue pain hold you back. Get the help you need to start feeling better today.

Saw an MSK physiotherapist today who managed to explain that my lower back and hip pain and urinary incontinence is likely because of my oophorectomy 7 years ago! She said everything you mentioned here too. Can’t believe I was discharged without access to a physiotherapist all those years ago and have suffered since! Thank you for your content ❤

I had my hysterectomy on Jan 11, 2022 and everything was fine until Jan 27, i had excruciating pain in my stomach that resonates all over the abdomen I thought I had a gastric attack (which I've not had gastric issues prior). Went into emergency and the gastroenterologists found my abdomen to be extremely distended and admitted me. The night itself they did an x-ray, ultrasound, and a CT scan, all showed that my smaller intestines had blockage, they explained that it maybe due to the recent hysterectomy surgery scar tissue healing causing it. I'm from Malaysia, and would like to know if you know of any similar therapist that you could recommend?

I have pain still at 5 weeks after surgery. I've heard that if there is some nerve damage, which I suspect because of sharp knife-like pain in the abdomen and numbness, it can recover and go away in 6-12 months. I'm hopeful. I regret having the surgery done, and particularly not choosing the surgeon myself. The surgeon I got wasn't a specalist in the field and when I spoke to her in advance she couldn't even be bothered to read my written email correctly, so she just answered it on the phone and misinterpreted the question probably due to speed-reading it. She hadn't even viewed my MRI which said I had a blood filled cyst of 1.5 cm on my right ovary. It was a gynecological laparoscopy. Couldn't postpone the surgery and felt pushed by my parents and the nurses who set up appointments. After the surgery I've been unable to recieve any check ups or control visits in spite of having unexpected symptoms afterwards.

When I left the hospital I was 85 pounds and a huge scar up my stomach to my belly button bc they had to clean out all the poison pockets because they mad me wait so long. You can also check for peritoneal cysts with a CT scan or ultrasound. They can be mistaken for ovarian cysts. If you have had abdominal surgery, you form scar tissue and this scar tissue can prevent you from absorbing your natural peritoneal fluid, especially if you are a woman with active ovaries. The fluid gets trapped in scar tissue cavities and form pockets of fluid that can continue to grow. This can put pressure on your organs: bladder causing urgency, stomach causing GERD, intestines causing constipation, rectum causing pain when sitting, etc. The drs mistook the symptoms as a gastric issue. They can grow very large and cause your cavity to bloat and feel hard. Mine was the size of a volleyball before they figured it out. Had surgery yesterday, feel soooo much better. However, the surgery just causes more scar tissue to form. So what do you do now?

Is it possible to experience these symptoms years later? I had exploratory surgery when I was an infant and they found a perforated duadenal ulcer. They went back because I had an abscess a few days later. When I was 16 I started getting WRETCHING stomach pain with nausea and I feel like my whole abdomen is cramping up I have to bend over. I also don’t ovulate despite having normal hormone levels. I always bring up my surgery to my DRs and no one says they are related. My scar is so tight on my muscles that when I gain weight, I gain weight around it and my scar stays sunk

I had a laparoscopy abdominal hernia repair 6 months ago, (no mesh repair) sutures were used to repair both hernias. and I feel pain in my chest and neck, I can't breathe well, sometimes I drink water and immediately burp it back out, and feel like I have to cough all the time. im feeling anxiety and had my first panic attack a month ago. never felt any of these symptoms prior to my surgery and I had the hernia for 15 years im 36. decided to fix it because my plastic surgeon wouldn't do a tummy tuck unless I fixed the hernia because it was considered too big.. im supposed to get the tummy tuck this march and Im so sad, I've actually been in a serious depression. its a constant feeling like someone is digging their hands in my neck or chocking me lightly, and pressure on my chest. anyone that has an idea on what I should do please help me out. thank you.

Hi, I have an ongoing pain on my right side of my belly that gets more intense by doing certain types of movements. I was pretty sure this pain was because of scar tissues as I had an laparoscopic surgery 3 years ago and this pain started a little bit more than a year after the operation. But now I just went through another laparoscopic surgery to see what is the cause of my ongoing pain, and they couldn’t find anything so far. Is it still possible that the pain is because of scar tissues?

I had a csection 14 years ago and 3 years ago got a CT scan to determine what was causing this sharp stabbing pain. Scar tissue was diagnosed based on the scan. Haven't had it treated as I haven't found a therapist in my city. Pain is terrible specially during my menstrual period and when I'm ovulating. I've massage it and it has help a bit but not to where there is no more pain. Wish for professional help😔

I have been on the supplement Sarapeptasse for 8 weeks. I can finally breath. It is saving my life. I can breath. I can bend over. Far less pain.
Scar tissue and adhesions were strangling my organs.
My digestive system is healing. I had a colonoscopy, the doctors said my Colon was “curly.” He didn’t know why?!?!? Seriously. Doctors don’t really know (maybe they do) what a surgery can do to their patient. I have a gallbladder that “a doctor” wants to take out. NO WAY!!! I’m certain he would have to cut through tons of scar tissue.
Everything you said about how you feel ... EVERY WORD. My doctors told me no test could show adhesions or scar tissue. Please. Buy Serapeptase and msm. I’m healing finally. I’ve suffered for 17 years.
      God bless.

I had a 17cm cyst that ruptured. They did surgery and took my left ovary and fallopian tube and my surgery was Dec 26th 2019. As of now May 11th 2020 i have been having a sharp pain when the pain was at the very beginning. Left lower abdominal area above the pelvis. Its a pulsing pain. I had a vaginal ultrasound about 2 weeks ago because I told them about the pain (it wasn't AS bad 2 weeks ago and now it is daily) and I go back to the doctor next week to see the results. If I'm using a hospital pain chart....it pulses at a 9..doesnt stay a 9 just when its pulsing. I almost want to go to the hosptial but that alone scare me right now. I took half a hydro pill. They went through my belly button, left side and top of belly button through laparoscopy.
Oh man and I forgot to take a pain pill on time 2 days after surgery and I felt like I was dying....that pain was way passed a 10.Also to day is the worst its been happening every hour and the pain medication does not help. It'll hurt for a good 10mins.

      Hi Adina,
The best way we can help is to actually follow the guidence in our C section solution program. Even though it says C section- after the educational part it applies to anyone that has had an abdominal surgery and how to recovery from it. We teach everything from scar, muscle and fascial release as well as the core strengthening to start with. Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
I have all these pains after my open abdominal hysterectomy on 30th March 2024 means more than 3 months earlier.
I can’t wear tight clothes or need very light plain and soft long dress which is especially loose at the belly and down areas.
My doctors at the hospital and family doctors say everything is normal but my pains of different types, different areas and on different days 😂are still not going.

How can a pelvic floor PT help pain nowhere near the area of surgery?! I went through a two years of it to help my pelvic floor dysfunction so I would be illegible for a reversal when I had my ileostomy. Well, it didn't help at all and I got an colonic obstruction three months ago. (I hadn't pooped on my own in five year: double full enemas and massive amounts of laxatives. I nearly died, had a colectomy and permanent ileostomy. The three-month post-op pain is worse than the original post-op. I'm getting a CT scan tomorrow but not hopeful if it is scar tissue/adhesions, unless surgeon is willing to laser them off. I had two pelvic floor therapists and they never once said they could help abdominal pain

@@sophiamacdonald2711 Hi ! I had an ovarian cyst laparoscopy too about 5 month ago. I am having lower abdominal pain since then. If I'm still and resting all day in my bed - then I don't feel any pain but if I walk or move - pain is there and it just won't go away anymore. Doctor's don't see problem. I'm frequent visitor to the emergency department because of this pain... Loosing my mind.
