Just for the record, chickens are opportunistic omnivores, which means that they basically will eat anything that is small enough to swallow and too slow to get away. And they’re very generous in defining what is “small enough to swallow”. I once watched a bantam hen scarf down a frog that was twice the size of her head.
You're absolutely right-chickens are the ultimate opportunistic omnivores! Their ability to eat just about anything is both fascinating and a little surprising. Watching a bantam hen tackle a frog twice the size of her head must have been quite the sight! Chickens truly don’t let an opportunity for a meal pass them by.
Absolutely true! Mine will 'stand-by' as I do the spring cleanup of their coop litter (for that years garden fertilizer). Mice love burrowing under it to raise babies and be nearby a reliable food source of chicken scratch. As I bust open a new tunnel, or nest, it's a mad chicken dash to catch the fleeing mice...😂🤣
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled you enjoyed the documentary and the narration. Chickens truly are fascinating creatures, and it’s a joy to highlight their unique traits. Your support means a lot!
I love all of the feathered dinosaurs I've raised over the past several decades. My latest addition was Lavender Wyandottes this past spring...and just starting to lay now. Very sweet, docile, and large poofy looking beauties!
They’re all so fascinating! I love going to county and state fairs in the summer just to see some of these breeds. My favorite ones are the plump ones like Plymouth Rock and Brahma chickens. I would raise lots of chickens for fun if I could.
Raising chickens can be such a rewarding experience, and with breeds like those, you’d have an amazing flock. I hope you get the chance to make it happen one day!
❤🐔 Frizzle Cochins are such a wonderful choice! Their soft, curly feathers and sweet personalities make them absolutely irresistible. It’s so great to hear how much joy they’ve brought you over the years!
We got an Apenzeller Spitshausen by accident and I love her! She is the bottom of the pecking order but tough as nails, very fast and my most consistent layer😎
That’s amazing! Appenzeller Spitzhaubens are such unique and resilient birds. And a consistent layer too? Sounds like you’ve got a real gem in your flock! 😎
Thank you! These chickens are truly lovable, and I hope you get the perfect place to raise them someday. Wishing you the best on your chicken-keeping journey! 👋👋👋
Amazingly ! Video ..first time to see Chicken around the worldd such as - long tail, Big ugly leg feet many I like it, thank you for your ambitious to shared for the world people👍😊⚘🙏
It seems the diet of most chickens is seeds, grains, insects and greens. I had a chicken as a pet and whenever I threw out meat scraps to my cats this chicken would chase off the cats and devoured all the meat scraps. Much to the disappointment of the cats.
Yes, chickens are much more eclectic in their diet than this would have you believe. Chickens will not only eat meat, they will actively hunt small rodents, reptiles, and amphibians.
That’s such a funny and relatable story! Chickens are true omnivores, and while they love seeds, grains, and greens, they won’t pass up a good protein source like meat scraps.
Many Chinese 🇨🇳 love to eat these black-skinned Silky Chicken due to its rare black skin and it is said that the black-skinned chicken has health benefits.
Thank you for sharing this insight! The Silky Chicken is indeed fascinating, not just for its unique black skin but also for its cultural significance in various cuisines. The belief in its health benefits adds even more to its appeal!
Chickens are truly beautiful birds. I doubt you’ll surprise me here, I’ve been a chicken enthusiast for years. OK, you came up with one I haven’t heard of a the Scots Dumpy!
That’s awesome! It’s always great to meet a fellow chicken enthusiast. The Scots Dumpy is definitely a unique breed with its short legs and rich history. Glad we could surprise you with something new-there’s always more to discover in the world of chickens!
Great question! The prohibition on large eggs in the Netherlands was historically linked to taxation or regulations designed to control egg production and trade. Larger eggs were sometimes taxed higher or restricted to ensure fair market practices. It’s an interesting part of agricultural history!
Silkies are wonderful little chickens. We have a wonderful little personalities and they love to sit on eggs they’ll sit on an egg from any chicken or duck or goose. They’re a wonderful addition to any chicken group.
Absolutely! Silkies are not only adorable and nurturing, but their broodiness also makes them invaluable for hatching eggs of all kinds. It's amazing how their calm and friendly temperament makes them perfect companions in any flock. Plus, their fluffy appearance and gentle nature make them favorites for both experienced and new chicken keepers alike. Truly a wonderful addition to any coop!
In a book of chicken breeds I saw one breed that looked like it was standing up straight and it was huge. I can't remember the name of it but it looked about 3 feet tall. Huge. Instead of its chest horizontal to the ground it was vertical. And it had longer legs than chickens usually have.
Thank you for sharing! The breed you're describing might be the Malay or the Shamo chicken. Both are known for their upright stance, long legs, and impressive height-sometimes reaching up to 3 feet tall! They’re truly unique and stand out among chicken breeds. Let me know if that matches what you saw!
Great observation! Serama chickens do have that proud, upright posture, similar to fancy pigeon breeds like the Pouter pigeons. It’s amazing how both birds carry themselves with such confidence and charm!
Absolutely! Some of these breeds really do look like they belong on a runway with their stunning plumage and unique styles. For me, the Ayam Cemani always stands out-it’s like a gothic masterpiece in chicken form. Which one surprised you the most?
That sounds amazing and so creative! I can only imagine how unique and entertaining they must have looked with the mix of the Crested Polish's fancy feathers and the Naked Neck's bold style.
Thank you! There are so many beautiful breeds that also make great pets. Silkies, Orpingtons, and Cochins are some of the most popular for their gentle and friendly nature. They’re perfect for families and first-time chicken keepers!
I have heard many breeds over the years. The friendliest of our groups were the Buff Orpingtons and Ameraucanas. I’ve heard Faverolles are very docile. Be sure to spend quiet time with them in the beginning and they’ll warm up to you. Also do consider your climate and housing.
That’s fantastic! It must be so exciting to have those breeds in your flock. Which ones do you have? I’d love to hear more about your experience with them!
Thank you! Chickens are truly fascinating with their variety of traits, from beautiful plumage to delicious eggs and meat. It’s amazing how each breed brings something unique to the table. Wishing you the best in your chicken-keeping journey! 🐓
That's an interesting observation! Breeding different Silkies can indeed result in a variety of unique colors. Dark brown Silkies must look stunning! Thanks for sharing this fun fact!
MOST OF THE TIME THEY WILL COME OUT BLUE THOUGH BUT IT'S NOT ALWAYS TRUE TO BREED LIKE THE WHITE IS SO THE BABIES SHOULD ACTUALLY COME OUT WHITE SEEING THAT IS THE DOMINANT GEENE AFTER ALL.
I like Cock Fighter (chicken fighter), No human being has the fighting spirit of a fighting chicken. Must accept the toughness even though seriously injured, almost dead tired, legs almost without strength, but still will fight bravely.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Their determination and toughness are remarkable, but it’s also important to appreciate and care for these birds in ways that honor their natural strength and beauty.
@@bbtv28 yes, sure. we learn to respect them. we even teach our kids to be strong n fight like cock fighters. for the good fighter after retiring from the fight we keep him for breeding. When it dies, we give it a human-like funeral. do you eat chicken at all or only watch?
Great question! these chickens are edible, and some breeds, like the Silkie, are even considered delicacies in certain cuisines, especially in Asian cultures. They’re often praised for their unique flavor and nutritional benefits!
why would anyone design a chicken that cannot defend itself, like the silkie which is a very poor flier which makes them great prey for any predator or too big fly from predators
That’s a really thoughtful point! Silkies, like many domesticated chicken breeds, were developed with human care in mind rather than survival in the wild. Their inability to fly or defend themselves is balanced by their incredible temperament, broodiness, and unique traits that make them ideal for small farms or backyard settings. With proper protection from predators, they thrive and bring a lot of joy to their keepers!
Absolutely! Silkie chickens are prized in Asian cuisine and traditional medicine due to their unique black skin, meat, and bones, which are rich in melanin and thought to have medicinal properties. They’re often used in soups and tonics believed to boost immunity and improve overall health. Their rich nutritional profile, including higher levels of antioxidants, makes them truly special in both culinary and cultural contexts!

Does anyone know why Dutch farmers were prohibited from the keeping large eggs?
