I must honestly say, out of a good percentage of "homesteading" vloggers , your family paints the best real, portrait of a homesteading life style. You are honestly just showing your life , without trying to be a household name, sell /promote stuff, or be UA-cam super stars to fund a "ideal" way of living ... Your the real deal Your family really warms my heart and inspires me to do better. 💙

Yes! While I appreciate anyone who figures out how to make money in virtuous ways, I can’t always relate anymore.
I relate on this channel best because I am just trying to survive with my homestead. I don’t have extra help. It’s me all week running five of my seven kids all over the place. My husband works hard and long to provide this for us, but it is soooo hard to make progress with when your homestead isn’t what’s making you any money. I can’t afford help, yet. And one thing I noticed is that watching the highlight reels of farms online that have so much money and help, has really affected how much I enjoy my own. I’ve had to step back from most online homesteaders because I get so discouraged with the reality of building my own. The smell, the mess, the damage the animals cause, the expense, the long, relentless work… That’s what’s reality of homesteading for the vast majority of us.

Agreed. It’s what brings me here. I follow most of the “down to earth” homesteaders (trying to make the move from CA), and this family just does it right. They don’t push agendas, merch, idears and etc etc. they just film their day, make us laugh, give tips and then they put the vid out! That makes me want merch and etc!

My parents grew up on a farm during the Great depression. Both never went without for food. They were pretty self sufficient.
Still, growing up as their children, it was surprising how much they saved and reused materialistically. Waste not want not, eating everything on your plate, and wearing hand me downs, and one present for birthdays… was just part of the family plan in the 1950’s.
As a parent in the 1980’s….my children’s life was completely different. I didn’t follow my parents values at all…We threw away so much stuff…..and bought more and wasted even more.
I have really had to look at my values and change my lifestyle a lot. I love what you are teaching your children, and the lifestyle they are learning…Bravo👍

I'm not a homesteader, just a retiree with limited mobility but I have always liked to use things that are worn past usefulness to make something new and useful, so I can relate.

My Granny raised 5 kids during the depression, she was NOT a hoarder but she was frugal and planned, budgeted and saved for things and had a small cushion for the unexpected. Anyhoo, she judged prospective grand-daughters-in-law by how they peeled potatoes. If they peeled them carefully, making fine thin peels they were thrifty and smart. If however they just jabbed at it every which way and took off great hunks of potato with the peel then they were spenders and ignorant.

Well said and yes it comes with practice and thinking outside the box. I'm "old" 68 and as I look back I'm a product of parents who clearly lived out these principles to which my siblings and I learned by example.
Oh to myself in thought or even out loud now and then I'll mumble making something out of nothing but truth is I find it very pleasing to repurpose food to wood to clothing etc.
Watching 4 grandkids in my daughter's home I often find multiple meals left in the fridge and as the caregiver I create many a meal using "leftovers" and when the table is very quiet everyone busy eating I know I've done well.
I think part of it is the "world" tends to be so fast paced fast food or a quick this or that often is the way. But as you have so stated Meg if you use those skills in the good times the hard times can be easier to get through.
Not to preach but things I learn over they years often are because people I surround myself with are teaching me by example. Quickly I'll share an analogy;. The hostage crisis was going on and you know from history or because you remember it 15 Americans were being held hostage in Iran for 18 months. One of which was the son of our Pastor and his wife. It was a very difficult time as parents for them not knowing if they would ever see their son again. Fast forward and the US was able to negotiate all 15 back home from Iran safely. A big celebration was held at our church in Southern California with over 3,000+ in attendance welcoming Gary home. The Pastors wife, Gary's mother, spoke to the audience and paraphrasing she said "Build today because when the waters are raging you can't build anything". What Gary's mother was saying is that as parents getting through 18 months with your child in harms way was extremely difficult. It was but by the Grace of God they were able to make it through and their long relationship with God saw them through. Building strong relationships over time and faith building gave them strength to draw upon in times of trials and tribulation.
We too can build skills like Meg is saying during the "good times" that will be very helpful during the hard times. If we slow down and be good stewards of what we have rather than consuming so much we can be better for it in the long run.

This is the life that my grandmother lived. She was incredible at not wasting anything. My favorite was the leftover mashed potatoes. They became potato pancakes or potato soup! My favorite was the potato soup. She did not waste anything. Junk mail got feed to the worms with the coffee grounds. She did not compost but would have a load a cow poop delivered every winter for the garden and most of her yard was garden. Old clothing was recycled into quilts or rugs the really warn out quilts became the filling for the new ones. This was how we kept warm in the winter. Nothing wasted.

    I really appreciate this today!
Myself and husband are older 63 and not well. I just got him out of a terrible situation after 3yrs in a nursing home that seriously almost killed him!
So.... Now we are temporally in a retirement community and he's on hospice with me as caregiver as he's in a wheelchair.
    BUT
    Good News is....
He's gone from 122lbs to 160lbs in a few months and is getting stronger each day. They also said he'd never walk..
Well he IS.... A little bit with the help of a walker.
    Ok... My point... Sorry
I've been so utterly scared with all that's happening.this place isn't a good place. I fought for 4 months just to get our refrigerator replaced because it wasn't working right. AND with his condition and the fact we can NOT eat the terrible food here...well I'm struggling. It's also VERY small, two rooms and not a normal kitchen. So I've had to be very resourceful to say the least to keep us feed.
It's so refreshing for me to watch your family each day.
Hell... I've been afraid to try and make bread but you showed me not to be... I thank you so much!
I want to thank you for this video today...we really need more of the same 😘
    Bless you all
    Stay safe 🥀

Upcyling is very satisfying. Each Spring our city has Fix Up/Clean Up week. Your junk goes on the blvd for the city to pick up and dispose of for free - however - it is a rite of Spring that whoever can use anything can just take it. Just be neat and don’t leave a mess. Scrapemetal is culled by those willing to do the work, windows are repurposed etc.
The end result is a much cleaner/neater city. Being unable to haul an old fridge away is no longer an impossible hurtle. Everyone has fun. Everyone has different skills and finding your exact free treasure is great! It’s a city wide event and people pose in costumes in the various piles just for laughs. Less junk in landfills, less yards filled with old washers/dryers etc. More creative projects and it gives people with limited resources a chance to get items they actually need. Win/win.

A couple of frugal things I did when all 10 children were home....picked the poultry rack clean. If there wasn't enough to make a meal, I stored it in the freezer and added to it. Cereal was a treat. Even 30 years ago, it was expensive and no one liked the bottom of the box,(or bag). So I would collect all the left overs in a large container and use that to make "rice crispy treats". I worked full time, so after school snacks and lunch treats were a challenge. So I had a collection of jars that held a double recipe for cookies in a jar, cakes, and brownies. There was a notebook with the ingredient list for the wet additives needed. I love watching your vlogs, and the efforts you put into your family.

Great video, Meg. Love hanging out in the kitchen. Those old sayings are still around for a very good reason. As my husband and I get older, I have realized that we don't need the quantity of most of the ingredients I use to present for a meal. Leftovers become future freezer meals. I love that. Figuring out how we can use the things we already have and create something we need. Second life for sure. Great video.

Well said!! My husband and I sold our 10acre farm that we weren't farming. It was taking alot of resources to keep it mowed and watered, snow ploughed, etc. In the house, we had a walk-in pantry. The buyer commented about my "grocery store". I planned ahead and had most things on hand instead of waiting until I ran out of things. Thanks for the reminders for the common sense things we should be doing every day.

I was taught from young to be frugal. And to make what you need with what you have, if at all possible. It is good to hear that ideal from others.
One such reuse.... I got a huge box of quilted pillow shams at an auction for $3. I have since stitched them together and made 4 quilts. And they are so liked in my family that I have been gifted with shams from garage sales...thrift stores... and other auctions. Have traded quilts for canning jars and other things that are well worth spending my sewing time for.
Was nice to hear your thoughts on frugality.
Wishes for a good day to all

Sensible, practical advice given without judgement. Much appreciated with all the negativity swirling around us these days. 🥰 Also, another way to save money is with textiles. You can choose to use/reuse/rescue in ways that can save a lot of money. Old towels and blankets make beautiful braided rugs, pot holders, cushions, table linens, lap blankets, purses, etc. It’s extremely easy to make curtains out of inexpensive flat sheets. An outdated dress or curtain from the second-hand store (if thought of simply as yardage) can give you a lot of material to work with. Remember Scarlet O’Hara? 🤣. Consider learning how to sew - it’s not that difficult and it’s easy to find an inexpensive sewing machine used or on sale. Need new blankets - or want to give them to people in need? You can often buy fabric in bulk online and hem them yourself. If you use iron-on strips you don’t even need to sew. 😊 Have you taught your kids how to hand sew at least well enough to repair a split seam, fix a hem or replace a button? I’ll get down off my soapbox now. Just a reminder that frugality comes in many forms. 😁

One of my most treasured cookbooks is a 1938 cookbook from Canada. The from scratch recipies were tried and true "depression" make dos, and early war years rationing "stretches" that used far less sugar and white flour. Also how to make the lesser grade cuts of meat more savory and tender, with the proper cooking techniques. A favorite recipe was baking meat, savory sauce and cheese into mini loaves for the kids "grab and go" lunch or after school snacks before chores.

Being resourceful not only saves money, but goes in hand with producing less waste to go in garbage dumps. The whole “reduce, reuse, recycle “ philosophy that’s similar to your “use it us, wear it out, make do or do without”mentality.

    Your "Helper" is Priceless!
Meg, for a younger woman, you are wise beyond your years.
I know of 2 other homesteaders that are trying to get people to get out and buy, to can, to learn to ferment your chicken feed. NOT to create fear, but to learn. Then if necessary help someone else.
    I don't like Fearmongering, period.
I think that what you both are doing, is teaching others HOW to make it! One day, much as I do now, your Children will look back and realize just how Blessed they were to have you for parents. I'm 70 now, I've lived my whole life as a "Prepper". As you said Meg, use it up!
I will have to go back, rerun your video and get that "COUNTRY GUMBO" recipe! That looks fantastic! Have you ever thought about doing a COOKBOOK? I would buy it!
I like seeing which Apron you have on too! Do you sew? I used to go to a thrift store and get "material", old shirts, T-shirts, just anything to sew with. I didn't have a girl of my own. But old shirts make cute little tops to go over diapers! Cut out and sew in an hour. Quilts are fairly easy too!
Anyway, I like what you said. GOD bless
