    There is a spot in my parents garden that just never grows anything! This is the BEST SOLUTION! Kudos on the great drip irrigation idea as well

      This is only the beginning Callan. I have plans for large statement trees as well.

    I like the fact that when it matures and the roots grow into the bottom soil, it will be so permanent and hard to move. I also like the visual interest between the color of the pot and the brewery that will grow along that area.

      Best idea for this kind of planting conundrum. And the great thing is that there’s so many resin pots to choose from

    So this is why you've been buying pots on the cheap. Good ideas on this post!

      Thanks Grace. There’s lots more to come, but for sure the next phase of the long shrub border re-do has begun

    Another gardening idea that I am sure many will apply in their garden. I love the idea of having individual drip systems in each pot. The application isn't cumbersome, plus it is well hidden and discreet !

    This will be good for your perennial border too. What texture and height will this give ? A LOT!

      So far, things are looking as I expected it. It also has formed the “bones” of this long shrub border.

    that resin pot looks good and classic. Where'd you get it ?

      Amazon has them. But I got these at a local big box.

    It's a good idea, but perhaps you must enriched the soil underneath the baseless pots first with compost,otherwise the plant will struggle once the roots reach the clay soil.

      True. Full disclosure here. Half of my bottomless/baseless pots performed well and a few, I’d say could use a good base of native soil/compost layer. Great tip! Thanks for chiming in 😃😃

    I know it looks nicer running your drip irrigation from the bottom but it could eventually get pinched from the weight of the soil. I wouldn't have filled the pot with soil as highly, so that more mulch could be used to slow water evaporation.

      Such a great idea to point out. I agree. So far, the type of drip hose that I used is made of firm plastic. Luckily, things are still running smoothly with no kinks. Just the same tho, that would be something I’ll point out the next time I put out another bottomless pot for another DIY. Much appreciated, your point of view. Cheers and thanks for being in the circle - Louie 👍🏼🙋🏻‍♂️

    What a wonderful idea. It’s a good way to work around clay soil. Did you put anything on the soil before putting the pot on top of it?

      I always amend the soil with Biotone Starter fert. I’ll be putting a layer of mulch on top of the soil to finish it off as well.

    Great idea! New to me! I have a question. What is your plan for a permanent planted bush when the pot begins to deteriorate? My containerized climbing rose accidentally discovered you’re method so I know it really works!

    • @ACORNHILL
      @ACORNHILL  4 роки тому

      Hi there! Thanks for dropping by. My pots were decidedly resin so I hope it won’t bow out and crack. We also live in NC so the chance of cracking from the colder elements are at a minimum.
      If the container is bad enough that it’s deteriorated, o think the best way would be to uproot and replant it into a bigger stronger container. Or build something around the elevated root ball of the Rose. Build something in the form of a Versailles Pot ? Which incidentally is another application I’ll be building in the winter for some areas in our property. Hope you this helps! And hoping you’d consider subscribing 😊

    I recently decided to remove the Base of my allready potted Roebelenii palm. It was such a big and heavy task. We toppled the pot, but not all the way to the ground, but rest the trunk of the palm on a low chair, hope by doing so it did not cause damage inside the trunk. With the toppling of the pot some roots, that were allready growing out of the drainage holes broke of. Somebody help me to drill out a big circle in the middle, but this was a thick based pot and it took about an hour from start to finish, with a lot of shaking of my palm, and some loosening of the roots. We tapped out the Base, and removed the pebbles, which was at the bottom for drainage, but by doing so, it left a gap where the pebbles was. It was impossible to put some soil back into the pot, so I just try to put a big heap of compost mixed with bone meal, for root growth, at the soil beneath. I'm so afraid now that there's going to be a space between the pot and the soil underneath, because it's impossible to know whether all the spaces in between the roots were filled with compost. I did water it immediately afterwards, and kept it damp. Now a month on I see that some of the new fronds have some brown leaves. I'm so afraid that I did more harm than good now, because the palm was so healthy and beautiful. Is there somebody who has had a similar situation or problem in the past? I just hope that the shock of all of this wil not kill my palm :(

    • @ACORNHILL
      @ACORNHILL  3 роки тому

      I am wishing you all the luck for your plant. I hope that it survives the shock. And let’s just hope that it is just shocked and will recover soon at best. I have not done a repotting/replanting project as big as yours. I can understand your concern. As a consolation, I would do the same - putting the compost/bone meal mix during the replanting stage. I wish your compost had mycorrhiza in it to help with further root production. Seriously “Baby” it! Thanks for sharing to us this project. And please share to us WHEN it becomes successful in the near future.

    So I tried this but I dug a hole and dropped the pot down in it. Only the top few inches of the pot is above ground. I didn't intend to do it this way. Just didn't realize how deep the hole was and when I did I decided to leave it be. Hopefully the plant will be ok. Next time I'll dig just a couple of inches down.🪴
