- A quick listen to the Fender Frontman 10G including how to get distortion and how it sounds with both electric an acoustic electric guitars. The instruments used are a Yamaha Pacifica and a Tanglewood.

It is my solemn duty to announce that on November 15th 2020 this wee amp, age 4 years 6 months, fell ill. For no obvious reason it now gives only a harsh whisper and the volume control does zilch. Thanks Fender, much appreciated!
Take the back off and spray electronics cleaner all over everything

But I like it loud :(
Yep, that gave me permanent tinnitus actually.
Allan Bennett Cool I have tinnitus too. And I’m just 16.
Ass kisser. >: B
Love the strategically placed pen, to give an idea of size
nice pen.
Amazing pen, would recommend.
lol!
LoL
I've ordered one. Arriving tomo. Can't wait!
The pen is of a classic utilitarian design. It is a compliment to the small footprint of the amp being reviewed, which is very utilitarian in itself.
Hello John, very good review. I like your relaxed approach, and yes, the sound of the voice does help!!
Cheers,
Eddie
I love your reviews Mr. Coupland!
Thank you. Got my Fender Strat and Frontman 10G today. This video is exactly what I needed to see before getting started.
Glad it helped!
I love these little 10-20w amps. They're great for recording.
I've got an Orange Crush 20rt and Vox Pathfinder 10 and love them both.
Looking for either a Fender or Marshall next!
I also have a Marshall MG10CD which is rather hissy.
you have a very calming voice sir
If mrs. Doubtfires brother gave amp reviews
lol
j stuff is enough. FULLY!
I can't unhear that now. Lol. 🤣
lol
Thanks I can't unhear that now🤣🤣
"A wee Fender." Love this guy. 😂
I'm getting one of these second hand. Sounds really nice.
Paul Potter me too
John....you make a really good instructor/demonstrator. The 'wee Fender' sounds suitable for a beginner like me. Thanks.
My pleasure!
Very good overview
I have the same amp and I love the sound of it!
Do you know how to make it sound metal?
@Gupster 23 and what should be volume
@Gupster 23 thank you sir
@Gupster 23 I'm so dumb sry
@Gupster 23 if u have insta what's ur @ I will follow you unless you don't want to
Great review, thanks!
Glad it was helpful Richard.
Great quality video sound on my iPhone XR.
Very true ... set gain for distortion before raising your volume .
Thanks Locus.
I love your voice too
The first video I found that gave me info on the gain settings. Btw nice pen 😂
Glad you liked it Braiden and the pen is for scale.
Would have been nice to hear your opinion and critique. Does look nice I might buy one for my nephew
wish you were my uncle
Miguel de Jesús Hernández Cadena LOL
hey, at 3:40, your trebble and bass configurations were...?
Approximately 3 and 8 respectively.
thanks man
What would the configuration be for blues or rock
Hi Neo, If you push the white button in, set the gain somewhere between 7 - 10 and the volume about 1-2 you will get the over-driven sound. The higher the gain the more distorted it becomes.
Hi John a quick question i you don't mind. Which guitar would you recommend in entry level , a Yamaha pacifica or a Squier Bullet Strat? if you could get them at the same price and same condition?
Years of selling gear taught me that Yamaha is always the safe bet.
I'll second that, Pacifica is more of a guitar. The only common issue across entry level Pacificas is the loose feeling knobs, to my knowledge this is still an issue on the updated Pacificas but it really doesn't detract from them.
They are *far* more playable than any Squier that competes in the beginner pricerange.
If you can scrape together a few more bucks go with a Fender Classic Vibe!
thaank you so much
Hello John, I started playing eletric guitar a few weeks ago, and I bought this amp. I like to play pop punk music, but i still couldn't find the right settings for a cool distortion. Can you please suggest me some settings for this amp? (gain, volume, treble, bass). thanks in advance!
Gain high, volume low, bass middlish and treble high. Amps all have their own sound which is probably more important than the guitar you use. I like Fenders for a clean sound but I am not keen on their distorted sound.
@@JohnCouplandguitar I'll try! thank you very much!
has anyone used this with a electric bass? i live in a small place and cant make too much noise. will this work?
Followed your advice to create the distortion effect: volume low, gain high (OR engaged, of course), but the sound seems to have changed not at all on my Stratocaster. Am I missing something?
Sounds like you have a duffer! You could try a friend's guitar or take it to your local store. They will of course ask, 'Did you buy it here?' If the answer is yes then ask them to test it. If the answer is, 'No,' then you will require a bag of doughnuts. We who work in guitar stores are simple souls and easily swayed by such things.
@@JohnCouplandguitar So, the guitar and not the amp, you think?
@@bryrsmith2001 There are only 4 possibilities, the amp, the guitar, the lead and God wants you to play clean!
How is it as a platform for pedals
I'm very new to guitars and amps and have only just started playing with this amp, I'm trying to get the distortion but no matter what I do it just sounds louder, no distortion. I've pressed the overdrive button, turned the gain up and the volume down, but nothing's changed. I have no idea what to do next, so I was wondering if you had any tips or ideas?
Make sure your guitar's volume is at maximum. Set the Gain at 10 and the amp volume at 2, press the button and fuzz should happen. Guitars with single coil pick ups, such as Strats and Teles, will produce less distortion than SG style and Les Paul guitars. These have double coils and so are sending a stronger signal to the amp and therefore produce more distortion. The distortion will be more obvious on chords rather than single notes. Hope that helps.
@@JohnCouplandguitar thank you! I'll give it a try!
Not sure if you're still responding to comments, but I have a Stratocaster with this exact amp and when I put on the settings you described for the heavily distorted sounds it ends up sounding distorted alright, but in a really crappy way. Any advice?
Perhaps you could try a friends amp and see if it sounds the same? If so the guitar is the villain but as I noted in the comments this particular amp fell ill after 4 years and only gave a hoarse whisper so It got chucked.
@@JohnCouplandguitar alright, thank you! I’m sorry about your amp as well, hope it served you well these 4 years
Me spends an hour trying to get distortion and can't get it.
Like a few minute video on UA-cam teaching me. Welp
Glad it helped.
Info from all tone settings please
awesome bro thanks for help im gona buy this
Glad I could help
@@JohnCouplandguitarhey man I dropped my speaker from a little height a while ago I was just wondering, the clean audio button seems a bit broken is there an explanation you could give me for this
How does this Amp sound with acoustic guitar?
Not that great, it lacks depth.
I have not heard this particular amp but I'd be willing to bet it makes your guitar sound double
Thumbs up for John!
Thanks and God Bless.
Hey John I got this amp but I don't nearly get as much distortion as you did. I have a Fender stratocaster. Could you help me out?
I was using a Yamaha Pacifica which has a double humbucker pick up in the bridge position. If your Strat has only a single coil then its lower output would explain the milder distortion. For the maximum distortion keep the gain high and the volume low.
Crank up your guitar volume knob to full
"They're very basic" ... nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned. I don't like amps with multi-effects controlled by a single knob.
I rarely use much if any distortion and over the years I've found that - for me - smaller amps give you a harsh growl when you hit that button.
Interestingly, one of my guitars is a Taylor T5z. One of the settings for its 5-way selector is for its acoustic sound which uses a combination of two pickups ... one being for the pure acoustic side of things. This has a notoriously subtle difference from the other four settings. I tried the T5z with this very model of amp and found that it couldn't cope but with a small Yamaha THR5a, the different is distinct and obvious,
Another straigthforward, no-frills review, John. Thanks.
I keep this wee amp because my Tascam recorder and the Yamaha THR5 do not get on with one another. Lots of hisses and crackling when I try to DI the THR. If I put a solid electric into the Tascam direct it hums at me but if i go via the Fender then all is clean and clear.
I have the same amp. It has a buzzing sound and has no distortion
same, found any way to fix it?
Thank you very much!
You're welcome!
What configuration did you use for the very first sound u played
Volume between 2 and 3, Treble 5, Bass 5 and the white button out.
Does is come with the cord to connect the amplifier to the guitar
No, some guitars are supplied with a lead but not amps. You should always have a spare lead as they do not last all that long.
You could play at a stadium with this amp. Just need to mic it to the house pa. Rock on.
Sir can I plug-in mic & guitar cable same time in this amp ?
The aux input has no volume control so you are likely to get instant feedback if you attach a microphone to it. If you can get a cable with the standard 1/4" jack going to a 1/8" jack then you could use the aux input for the guitar and use the guitar's controls to limit its volume. The normal input could then be used to control the mic.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Ohk...tnq 😇
Bought one of these for practice where I can't use my 150w Mesa Stiletto. It rips
Would this be good for a bass guitar? I am a beginner and want something cheap.
No, a bass would blow the speaker. The bass equivalent is the Fender Rumble 15. Guitar amps are built like sports cars while bass amps are built like bulldozers and tend to be tougher.
John Coupland I understand. Thanks!
"Upset the neighbours". The phrase made me smile. If only mine were so considerate. Sometimes I feel like I'd like to just let rip with my amp at full loud (not a 10w Frontman) blasting metal riffs with high gain distortion pedal engaged. That said, I too use headsets at home with my electrics including my acoustic-electric so "I don't upset the neighbours". LOL Unfortunately reciprocity isn't any more a part of their inherent or acquired behaviours than it is their vocabulary. Sadly, increasingly the way of the "Me Me Me!" world today in my misanthropic worldview. o.O
People deserve the right to not be forced to listen to your music. Keep it down, Slash. If you want to scream play a gig
Hello! I know it’s an old video, but I hope you see my comment. I need your opinion. I have this amp and I want to buy a Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal and an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone chorus pedal, but many people have told me that it won’t be sounds good because this amp is not suitable for use with pedals. Is it true?
Hi Sophy, Good pedals like these will improve any amp so just go for it.
@@JohnCouplandguitar oh, thank you so much🙏🏻
For $50 more you can get the Fender Champion 20, which I think is a much better amp, more features, effects and more value for the money. What do you think?
Hi, I have this amplifier and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the settings for metal rock on this amp?
First put the volume on your guitar to max. Now set the volume on the amp to around 2, then increase the gain until the neighbours complain, then back off a little.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Thanks! I might get a new larger amp because I've heard my ones overdrive isn't very good
Can you do a video fender vs line 6 micro spider???
Only if someone I know gets one.
Sir I have yamaha fsx 80c electroacoustic guitar ....plz suggest me should i take frontman 10g or not .....
This amp will do the job but it only lasted 4 1/2 years, then it died.
@JohnCouplandguitar thanks for ur feedback sir .....then plz suggest me an amplifier suitable for yamaha fsx electroacoustic and electric guitar
@@bickramduttabanik659 Laney and Peavey amps are good.
@@JohnCouplandguitar thanks a lot
Your voice sounds like brian johnson from acdc
Can I plug in an acoustic electric guitar to this amp?
Yes you can.
John Coupland thank you sir! God bless you and stay safe!
does it work with a bass guitar?
Not all that well. You would be better getting the bass version which has a more robust speaker such as the Fender Rumble 15.
@@JohnCouplandguitar thanks
Would you say this is a pretty good amp for someone just beginning to play the electric guitar?
You should have no problems with this amp.
Yes this amp and a well sound dampened room well away from. Your loved ones Sorry my nephews one is learning Saxophone The other Trumpet and the youngest A 5 gallon bucket and wooden spoons He gave up the hammer Just when he was getting good too Or in the back yard with a Bigmuff Distortion pedal a 12 pack and Write the song Titled Picking up a cat with a pair of pliers all 24 verses I promise they will love your budding guitarist
is this good with an acoustic electric guitar
It will work ok.
I buy it
Big Clive! Is that you?
i have rg series guitar and this amp when i play with effects it sounds crap is it amp problem ?
If the amp sounds OK without effects then the amp is not the problem. If you are using several pedals then removing them one at a time will show if the problem lies there. Try arranging them in different orders and use the shortest leads you can. Only use distortion from the amp or a pedal but not both as they may well clash.
Can the amp make the guitar sound distorted?
So can I play stuff like Nirvana?
Only if you feel you must.
Could you play stuff like nirvana b4 without the amp lol Sorry Couldn't help it Like the joke Man is gonna have surgery on his hand and asks the Doctor Hey Doc after the surgery will I be able to play violin The Doctor say yes after your fully recovered you should have no problem playing the violin The man replied That's great iv always wanted to be able to play the violin and never could
you need a good floor pedal to emulate the alternative sounds of nirvana songs like come as you are
guys, should i buy this amp, im a beginner tho
Yes, it's a good little travel amp and takes up little space, has a nice unique small amp sound. I've found 2 used for 15 each, look around for a used one, people don't realize how sweet these are.
@@kickle007 I'm selling mine, distortion channel is dreadful
does this amp has a distortion channel?
Distortion is found by pressing the white button as demonstrated in the video.
But will it Chug
whats the difference between the 15g?
It is a bit louder and has a few more knobs to give you more control over the tone and is slightly heavier.
John Coupland please is this amp (the 10g) is to loud?
because I want to make the minimum of sound in my room to not bother my family in the other rooms of my house,so this amp can do the job or it's to loud?
Remember that your guitar has a volume control so even if the lowest amp setting is too loud, you can always turn it down on the guitar.
John Coupland but they told me that the volume on the guitars isn't for the volume (loud or low)but it's like settings,I don't know really I'm confused
but for this one what's your opinion since you have one
If Davos Seaworth gave amp reviews.
Can you plug pedals into this amp?
Yes you can, just remember to buy another guitar lead when you buy the pedal.
i have that amp
so?
I have that amp too.
It is a great amp for the money and you don't have to worry about having the neighbors call the law on you if you are playing later at night.
does it have the hum?
It is fairly quiet in that respect.
John Coupland ok, thanks
3:10
Oh god
If Uncle Colm from Derry Girls gave a review.....
The distortion channel is pretty much unusable. This really bummed me out when I first started playing ages ago. I would recommend any amp but this for a beginner. It will just make you think you sound like a crap and you won’t be able to play anything heavy. The clean channel is ok I guess. There’s a lot better practice amps available now for pretty cheap. Fender makes greats amps but this particular one doesn’t reflect well on them. I have a particular scorn for these because it will discourage beginners from playing guitar. Awful.
Thank you for not playing wanky, crappy blues licks.
Damn, that was going to be the title of my next album.
Could plug into a beer can and sound better than this.
Dude, it would be great if you wouldn't mumble and speak clearly.
Ask your mommy to clean out your ears.
They are junk
