There are class a and ab amplifiers that use transistors, a is linear and should clip on the positive and negative peaks equally at the same time. The ab is a push pull made to be as linear as possible but the problem occurs at the zero crossing of the signal, and besides the peak clip, the harmonic distortion comes at the zero crossing since one part amplifies the positive and one part the negative parts of the signal and the zero crossing are offset and don't make a perfect crossing for the signal and creates a distortion. So a clean pure sine wave which a guitar string makes with the pickup should go through the preamp class a, and then to the power amp class ab and reproduced without distortion. Then you put a fuzz box or effects pedal between the guitar and the preamp to shape your waveform to be amplified. So, of course if you want distortion and noise, yes even the cheapest amplifier can technically be a good amp, but if you want a good clean or correct representation of the signal you are putting in with the result of what you want out, the better the quality amplifier is also of course the better amplifier. Usually it's preferred to have a better quality amplifier and create your own signal than have a crappy amplifier that distorts your signal before you shape it the way you want it. I didn't go into tube amps since it applies to them also, or if solid state use a MOSFET which have the same characteristics as tubes. But a class a tube amp sounds louder than the same power ab tube amp and class a has lower plate voltage. Also, the reason we have fuzz boxes is the same reason the amplifier clips the signal like over driving a class a amplifier does. And that originally happened in tube amps because they weren't using transistors back then for guitar amps. And most people prefer tube characteristics over solid state as more appealing to the ear.

Thank you for the excellent review. I just ordered my first bass, and included the Fender 10G Amp. Was looking for something compact that won't blow out the walls while I am practicing. Glad it has some clear crisp sound too. Once I get better, I can look at going from my beginner bass and equipment to the next level. Looks like a great start for sure.
hey congrats! Because the Fender 10G speaker isn't designed for bass guitar, make sure you keep it at a lower level. There's a chance of damaging the speaker at louder volumes. I recommend the Ampeg BA108 practive bass amp, which is what I have.
The Vox sounds better. And its under 50 bucks in Japan, which I was surprised about. The Fender sells just because of the name, but not quality. The Vox speaker is a 6 inch, 8 ohm speaker, is a half inch larger and apparently is a Vox speaker, the fender says special design 4 ohm speaker, but probably has a generic Chinese speaker. Special design sugar coats Chinese crap quality. I'm just glad my 30 year old USA peavey audition chorus still works. I doubt that fender 10g will last even ten years.
Oh, by the way, I used to have a tiny Squier Sidekick amp, no bass whatsoever. But I discovered if I put it on a wooden shelf, or table, it resonated the surface, and the bass came alive. Try it with the Fender, you might like it.
The Vox is now fetching over $100 US new and around $80-$90 used and the fender comes in a kit with a Squire, go figure! Love the channel dude! And thank you for wearing a mic, it's really appreciated!
I'm a novice with these things, but the Fender had a brighter cleaner sound, more treble, whatever. I ordered one from freakin' Amazon; taking a year and a day to get here - no, not really, ordered Dec 20, and supposed to get it 1/7, that's 18 days - must be coming from China like everything else.
well high pitched feedback always takes the trophy when comparing amplifiers! Hahaha the pathfinder would in my opinion be the better choice. Honestly the quality of some of the mini amps would make them a good choice in the beginner's category.
All due respect Lando, but I love my Fender Frontman 10. I just don't seem to have problems dialing in a good Fender tone with it. The overdrive is great, for me, and the sounds I produce to jam. Of course every ear is different, and tone tastes vary. I appreciate a very professional demo of both amps. With a little work, tweaking, and a good PA board I'd gig either, or, or both.
11:45 what’s the song name I recognize it but I have no clue Edit: nvm it’s paranoid Android by Radiohead. Glad I got that otherwise sleeping would’ve been hard
I got this Vox about 6 years ago for $65 with tax, and the Vox is pretty good. My semihollow Tele with humbuckers through it with no other effects was able to get really nice full clean tones and on gain channel you can get a good classic rock rhythm or maybe 1960s lead, and maxed out you can sound exactly like the Beatles Revolution. Love that thing. I have better amps but still plug into it sometimes bc i just love Vox amps but dont have an AC-15 or 30 yet.
I have the white Union Jack Vox Pathfinder 10 (with LED mod and added 8" Celestion 8 15w 8ohm speaker) and after I did the 2 mods (both were super easy) the Vox Pathfinder 10 is super loud and actually sounds pretty darn cool!! And on the overdrive channel it can get too loud but breaks up beautifully!! I have to start using it more!
"Super simple mod here. Unsolder the two red LEDs shown in the photo and remove them for a noticeable increase in gain/headroom and a better sounding breakup." from www.tdpri.com where I learned about the mod! full link: www.tdpri.com/threads/muy-caliente-vox-pathfinder-15-15r-modification.217302/
The VOX may have better bass but It's also 30 bucks more I went with the fender and I plan on using the headphone out to my Fender Frontman 212 100 watt amp auxiliary in
I had both loved the vox didn't care for the fender cause I like to play my phone through it and.the vox had great, sound I just sold my fender and ordered a new vox
I prefer the Fender, it's much less muddy and it's tighter than the Vox. Some of the OD tones from the Vox were cool, but the Fender sounds like a perfectly serviceable recording amp.
Got the Vox yesterday and been jamming on it ever since. Prefer it to my Crush20rt! Really nice sound, and like they say takes pedals really well. Wanna do the led mod but don't wanna hurt it lol
Surprisingly the VOX sounded better. It’s cleaner, and solid. I just don’t like the more gain it was the more distorted it got. The Fender sounded forced, static. I did like the on/off gain.
If you add an external speaker Jack to the vox it is a killer sounding amp. You can't mount the Jack to the chassis though. I took an old end jack plate from a guitar and mounted it to the back panel. I run my pedel board through it but it sounds really great with just a reverb pedel and the amps drive by itself. I know most people won't do this but if you have one you will love it after doing this. The crappy little internal speaker is junk.
I would have liked to hear what the Fender amp sounds like with a Fender guitar. Supposedly Fender amps are built and voiced for the classic Fender tone, or so I've heard. That being said, I thought the Fender sounded thin all around. Vox was much warmer and fuller than the Fender, which is a bummer, because I was considering getting the Fender. I like the way the Vox sounded but I hate the way it looks. Not into that 60s styling
Really helpful! Somebody actually just comparing the products rather than showing off their amazing guitar skills. IMHO it seemed to me that the VOX really came across as head and shoulders the better amp. The Fender sounded like a typical, almost annoying sounding cheap little practice amp that you might get in a 'beginner's package' for Xmas or a kid's birthday whereas the VOX sounded like a proper small amp in its own right. For that kind of money, I'm going to get one!
Really great video man you explained everything well. I personally thought the Vox smoked the fender on every level. Like you said “it sounds like a real amp”. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 14 and I’m now 21. Haven’t been able to play nearly as much now for the past year in a half or so considering I’m an active duty Marine and I need a cheap amp for my barracks room. The vox may just be the amp I invest in. Looks like a perfect amp for a room but we’ll see. I’ll definitely keep this amp in mind as I continue my research. Question. Do you the think the Vox is still good for overdrive? The fender just sounds cheap to me. I do play in a lot of clean but I definitely play a lot of rock and metal. Would you recommend an amp like this for rock or would you suggest a different one? Than you.
I just got into guitars and I’m guessing amp addiction is a thing. Cause I want to buy every amp I see!!! I have this little fender and it’s perfect for practice. But now I want this VOX too! And that Yamaha thr10. Ugh. Oh and a champion 100!
Personal is as follows ... I am thinking of buying an amplifier I am researching and analyzed some. I like British rock, Oasis type, Beatles, rolling stones and some American bands. Do not cut heavy metal! Just classic rock !! The most interesting ones were the fender champion 40, orange ldx 35 and lastly Blackstar ID: Core 40 Orange for lack of product and high price discarded !! So now I'm undecided between the fender champion 40 and the Blackstar ID: Core 40 (I'm not interested in valves) !!! The latter called me attention because it has a device that leaves with American sound (imitating a fender) or English, which I find super interesting What I did not like is that it has no knobs to adjust the bass, (more can be adjusted by the black star software! The Black Star is a little more expensive than the fender! What do you guys think ??
Vox sounds way better. Call me crazy, but I run my Boss MetalCore pedal into the clean channel of that Vox practice amp and I get one hell of a Mesa Boogie Mark 4 rock metal tone. Tight saturated quality distortion.
Great comparison. Vox wins, but it costs half again as much as the Fender, so that should be expected. The closed back of the Fender gives it more presence, at the expense of bass...well that and the extra few sq. inches of speaker that the Vox has.
I heard frontman for the first time 13 years ago and ever since Ive thought that its the worst major brand manifactured solid state amp ever. The distortion is also too trebly and harsh/raspy. Pretty useless tone. Im disagreing a big time about the distortion. Vox was tons better. Maybe boosted with tube screamer could have been really nice od tone since ts adds some mid range. You used also too much distortion with bought amps. The yare not for heavy metal.
3 Questions: 1. Is the vox Loud? 2. Do i need a distortion pedal for the vox or is the Distortion of the amp good (Like for metallica songs?)? 3. I just want good clean tones and good distortion, so wich one is better for that?
the Vox is surprisingly loud and has good low end. Distortion is a personal taste, but it is pretty rich on this amp. I would pick the Vox for clean and distortion over the Fender
The Vox has a way more fuller sound, than the Fender, i love the sound of the Vox it works for clean jazz, but also for higain stuff, Not that the Fender are bad, i my self got a Fender Champion 20, and the bass response is weak but it shines in some case´s,....Very good Demo man! Thanks a lot n Love cheers💚🎸
Listening through headphones on an iMac 27 inch desktop, the Fender was louder, which is what the meter showed. The Vox also sounded cleaner. Have you reviewed the Fender Frontman 212R? I had one about ten years ago and ended up selling it, replacing it with a Fender Blues Junior. What would be your choice of amps in the $500 range?

Some folks liking that VOX. I don't know. That Fender has way better dynamics, meanwhile the Pathfinder mutes some mid frequencies and sounds awful. Fender could use some mid boost but atleast it sounds all there.
I still got my Pathfinder 15R. I have it pared up with a Vox AC15VR. I use a Boss ME-50 effect unit. Considering that effect unit has two outputs, I sent one to the AC15VR that I have set up as the clean amp, and send the other to the Pathfinder 15R that I have for the dirty amp with the boost switched on for the Pathfinder 15R.
Hi i am about to buy a guitar and an amp. My first set. I am not familiar with all these so i am trying to figure out some things through net. I noticed a difference between the specs of these two amps that is not mentioned in the video. The Fender has an aux in in order to plug a phone (or a pc?) and play a backtrack among with the guitar. As far i understood vox does not have an aux in. So my question is how someone use the vox and play a backtrack and the guitar simultaneously through amp Is that possible? If not what are the alternatives?
I’ve plugged in a microphone to that amp so an acoustic pickup would certainly work. The microphone only worked on the gain setting for some reason. When I say it worked, it worked but not well. You’d never use it that way for a gig.

Dude same!! I was like it’s fender it 30$ cheaper u can’t go wrong, oh was I wrong LOL , I just ordered a pathfinder today
VOX 🦊
..can't you just ad a little spring reverb tank and mount it to the bottom of the cabinet on that VOX 🦊
The Fender sells because it’s packaged with a guitar for $200 combined. ;)
The vox
Sounds the best to me l have a Vox AC 15 in white
👍🇦🇺👍
Nice! I like ac15s
Oh, by the way, I used to have a tiny Squier Sidekick amp, no bass whatsoever. But I discovered if I put it on a wooden shelf, or table, it resonated the surface, and the bass came alive. Try it with the Fender, you might like it.
Artamus Sumatra cool thanks, I'll give it a try!
Artamus Sumatra Thanks for the tip to get better base. I bought the Fender off this review; seems like the Fender has more Heart.
GretaGecko is it good I heard the amp is trash
Vox is definitely creamier!
Have fun!
glad to see a LP in ur channel.
This channel is gonna grow big soon!!! Loved the video. Very helpful.. Thanks
Appreciate the support! Ya hope it grows too :)
well high pitched feedback always takes the trophy when comparing amplifiers!
With a little work, tweaking, and a good PA board I'd gig either, or, or both.
hey all good! Tone is in the ear of the beholder. There's no good or bad, only what's right for you. 🎸🎸🎵😁
11:45 what’s the song name I recognize it but I have no clue
Edit: nvm it’s paranoid Android by Radiohead.
I have better amps but still plug into it sometimes bc i just love Vox amps but dont have an AC-15 or 30 yet.
nice deal!
I have to start using it more!
thanks now I'm going to mod it, can't resist. Speaker upgrade is easy enough, but what is the LED mod?
Sounds cool!
"Super simple mod here. Unsolder the two red LEDs shown in the photo and remove them for a noticeable increase in gain/headroom and a better sounding breakup." from www.tdpri.com where I learned about the mod! full link:
www.tdpri.com/threads/muy-caliente-vox-pathfinder-15-15r-modification.217302/
I found this great demo: ua-cam.com/video/JIrt_5hKQq4/v-deo.html
Did the led mod already. holy wow! crazy. looking for the best deal on that speaker now. thanks again!
I got the 8" Celestion 8 15w 8ohm speaker from Amazon.com instead of .ca as it was oddly a better deal!!
The VOX may have better bass but It's also 30 bucks more I went with the fender and I plan on using the headphone out to my Fender Frontman 212 100 watt amp auxiliary in
My Fender arrived today and 4 hours later I see this video
that's the way it goes sometimes right? 😀😵
The vox gets the looks by a lot in my opinion
And vox definitely better clean/overdrive
But ctazy good vid btw!
Great comparison
I just love how you tried to avoid playing Crazy Train at 13:17
Also: really enjoyable review and great consumer advice, I'll go for the VOX.
I had both loved the vox didn't care for the fender cause I like to play my phone through it and.the vox had great, sound I just sold my fender and ordered a new vox
hey cool! what Vox did you order?
lando27music vox pathfinder 10
I prefer the Fender, it's much less muddy and it's tighter than the Vox. Some of the OD tones from the Vox were cool, but the Fender sounds like a perfectly serviceable recording amp.
Got the Vox yesterday and been jamming on it ever since. Prefer it to my Crush20rt!
Really nice sound, and like they say takes pedals really well.
Wanna do the led mod but don't wanna hurt it lol
nice!
Surprisingly the VOX sounded better. It’s cleaner, and solid. I just don’t like the more gain it was the more distorted it got.
The Fender sounded forced, static. I did like the on/off gain.
Really? I loved how when the gain increases, distortion does too.
fyi closed back have more trebles. it's the open backs that have more bass. its science man.
Rachel Woodruff Fender lied in the manual! I will never trust them and their $89 amps again. 😲🤣😉👍🎸
whoa
Nice video. I'm going to crank my hardly used 35 dollar front man now.
Plz give the frontman some love
i think i dialed in a overdrive tone that I liked 😁
If you use it with a single coil Fender guitar the FM sounds ok. Roll back the guitar volume a little helps.
The Frontman 15R was my first amp too!
ORLY? I think that the Black and Gold color is good.
For that kind of money, I'm going to get one!
hey thanks! ya your summary is pretty much spot on. the Vox has low end that the Fender can't match
Great comparison video. Very well done. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
I'm a fender guy. Love my fender amps. Both my tube and SS amps are just awesome. But the Vox kills the fender counterpart.
I agree in this case :)
Nice demo! No hidden issues here.
Than you.
hey there! I would actually suggest the Katana Mini. It can be battery powered. I've done a number of videos with it. take care!
I just got into guitars and I’m guessing amp addiction is a thing. Cause I want to buy every amp I see!!! I have this little fender and it’s perfect for practice. But now I want this VOX too! And that Yamaha thr10. Ugh. Oh and a champion 100!
sounds like you've got GAS! (gear acquisition syndrome) very common for guitar players
Lando27Music lol agreed. ;)
Personal is as follows ... I am thinking of buying an amplifier I am researching and analyzed some. I like British rock, Oasis type, Beatles, rolling stones and some American bands. Do not cut heavy metal! Just classic rock !! The most interesting ones were the fender champion 40, orange ldx 35 and lastly Blackstar ID: Core 40
Orange for lack of product and high price discarded !!
So now I'm undecided between the fender champion 40 and the Blackstar ID: Core 40 (I'm not interested in valves) !!!
The latter called me attention because it has a device that leaves with American sound (imitating a fender) or English, which I find super interesting
What I did not like is that it has no knobs to adjust the bass, (more can be adjusted by the black star software!
The Black Star is a little more expensive than the fender!
What do you guys think ??
The vox for clean and fender for OD.
No way
Vox sounds way better.
The closed back of the Fender gives it more presence, at the expense of bass...well that and the extra few sq. inches of speaker that the Vox has.
the Vox was cheaper because it was used. normally it costs more than the fender
I got that vox today and am trying to find a good balance for my overdrive. I wish you would have told us that you dialed in for the vox.
just dial in what sounds good to you! tone is a personal thing and real life vs recorded close mic can be very different
Good demo, I like the Vox
Got one coming tomorrow
😁👍
Vox guyssss look at the skin of the VOXXX. BEAUTIFUL !!!
I had the fender for a practice amp, and it SUCKED! There's the exact vox on fb marketplace. Ima get it. Theres a lot of Tom Petty in that Vox! 🔥👌🤘🏼🤙👊
What would be your choice of amps in the $500 range?
haven't tried a Fender Frontman. I don't know any amps at that price in Canada. everything has spiked in price
@@landonbailey
What kind of camera do you have? I'm a retired photographer living in south Texas.
sony zv-e10 currently
@@landonbailey
Sony has come a long, long way with their cameras. I used to shoot for the Kansas City Chiefs and almost everyone on the field was shooting Canon gear with only a couple of Nikon shooters. Nobody was shooting Sony. I retired from photography about 5 years ago and have seen a 180 degree turnabout in regards to Sony.
The vox would make a great luthier shop amp
Vox or fender idk which to buy
vox

Really like the Vox, sounds a lot fuller and warmer. Thanks for the vid :)
no problem! the bigger cabinet helps I think
lando27music any thoughts on the Vox AV15, please?
I haven't tried one myself but would definitely be interested to if I came across one. it has an interesting internal design. check the pics here www.voxamps.com/AV15
take care!
lando27music i thought it had a really nice valve sound and a ton of features, so i could ditch my Boss ME-50 and save a bit of clutter.
Agree with your review. It's spot on. Vox is good for clean and classic overdrive. Not for metal, probably.
Had a Vox ac30, got knicked, along with my Westbury deluxe. In a 2 door mk1 Ford escort. OK the car shell is worth a bomb now, but at the time is was worth less than the guitar.
Got the car back, but never the amp and Guitar.
Just ordered a vox pathfinder, and I'm liking the sounds, Going punk again, first song will be "feck Brexit"
subbed, like the style eh?
I thought I was reading script lines from Snatch and/or Kingsman :) welcome to my crazy world
And the LEDs are going ;-)
I also will pick a guitar, oh wait... damn, I only have one.
all you need is one you love :)
Vox pathfinder was a great serie's, especially the 15r i still have, probably discontinued because it was way to good for the price;)
👍🎸
"it's a thing......... it does stuff" (hilarious!!!) Great review, thank you!
Gabe Bravo I say all sorts of dumb stuff. 😁😲 not sure what I was talking about, but that sounds like me. 🎸👍
Yea you were talking about the decibel recorder thing..... also a great explanation on Likes at the end.... FReakin' funny!! Awesome to have some comic-relief in the Gear-guidance..... thanks again!
ha cool! you should see the stuff I cut out. even more nonsensical. 😁
👍👍🔥🔥😂😂😂🎵🎵🎵👌
You’re a funny guy. I subbed instantly.
The Vox also costs $20 more on Amazon right now.
I had ordered the Fender, then I saw this video and ordered the Vox. I'm returning the Fender soon
cool, glad the video could help :)
@@landonbailey Great review and content, great intros (and outro! :D) I'm subscribed
hey thanks! I always try to do something original in the outros. thanks for noticing 🎸👍
Fender sounds like my ears got water in them
Got a used Fender tonight for $50. Supposedly lightly used. Ain't played the bass in 15 yrs. Hope it works.
a Fender what? that's like saying, I got a Honda :)
I have a front man 10g and taking the back panel helps it a little.
Hello i am your great fan please reply me❤..i am confused in 2 amps
1. Orange crush 12
2. Vox pathfinder 10
. which one should i take?
hey there! I have not tried the Orange crush 12 so I can't say if I like it
@@landonbailey can u plz check?
how? :) I don't have the amp. Also it's what is good for you, not me. it''s all personal taste :)
Some folks liking that VOX. I don't know. That Fender has way better dynamics, meanwhile the Pathfinder mutes some mid frequencies and sounds awful. Fender could use some mid boost but atleast it sounds all there.
what sounds good to you is what is important! 👍🎸
I like playing with a clean spund, wich one do you prefer?
I prefer the Vox
When you said "bring da base up to eight" you sounded so Midwestern
I'm more North Eastern, Ontario. :)
I had a pathfinder 15r awesome amp
that's one I haven't tried yet
lando27music thx for the great content! You are the Canadian Shane lol
ha thanks! except Shane can play guitar! I can pretend to play in a video :) .
You wouldn't be able to play a backing track though this Vox amp. there are other Vox models that have the option though
Epiphone or gibson? Beautiful either way
Hello..Can i use my acoustic guitar to this Vox? Answer plis
hey ya it will work
I’ve plugged in a microphone to that amp so an acoustic pickup would certainly work. The microphone only worked on the gain setting for some reason. When I say it worked, it worked but not well. You’d never use it that way for a gig.
vox pathfinder 10 vs Marshall MG10G which one do you prefer ?
I've never tried one so far
