Right? Because then they have to unpack all their emotions about it, and sometimes it's easier to just not deal with it when you have things to think about like children and a career.
It’s sad though what they experienced during the filming of Romeo and Juliet. I can sense the mental frustration. I am glad Hussey and Whiting are still close friends, even celebrating holidays with their families. I love a lifelong friendship.
I remember seeing her being interviewed in France at about 15 or 16 smoking a cigarette and drinking red wine and this I was all on film like it was completely normal.

Thank you, Olivia, for speaking out. It's seeming these types of workplace abuses and exploitations of children are much more common than previously thought. Whiting in that interview looks like Zac Efron. So unfortunate what happens to these child stars when they aren't protected, respected, and properly/appropriately loved
Thanks for this one. I was sixteen and working at the local theater. I bet I watched it a dozen times. I was the same age, I cannot begin to imagine her managing that role so well.
I think it’s not abnormal for someone who was essentially groomed and pressured into something to realize how bad it was later in life. It’s true that until his death she may have felt a sense of loyalty to him possibly out of fear as well since he did get her so much work. Look at Brooke. Now she’s singing a slightly different tune due to her having children and realizing how young she actually was when she was put into doing those scenes and roles.
I first came across her work in the movie psycho. She is such a stunning natural beauty that she was the perfect choice for Juliet. The Hollywood industry is so corrupt that I totally believe what she said happened to to be true.
I remember watching Romeo and Juliet in school, mostly boys love that part when she gets out of bed. I remember I first saw her play "mary" in Jesus of Nazareth and thought she was the perfect character to play bc of her natural beauty and I thought she was a fantastic actress.
I forgot she played the Virgin Mary I never saw Jesus of Nazareth but I do remember her from Romeo and Juliet out of every Romeo and Juliet this one the one with Claire Danes and Leonardo dicaprio and the last one they recently did in 2015 are my favorite Romeo and Juliet's
I pretty much grew up with her because I saw her in so many magazines as a teenager and I tried to follow her career whenever I could. Didn't know that she suffered from agoraphobia until much later; you can see it at times in her performances!😔
Wow...That's sad that they had that experience while filming that movie.. It was my most favorite Romeo and Juliet version ever. Now, I'm not sure if I can ever watch it again, without thinking how exploited these two children were treated. I hope they get some compensation after 50 years, because it would be the right thing to do. But, in reality, I don't expect the studio to pay them a dime. Unfortunately.
Holy crap they played this Romeo & Juliet movie in freshman year of school for all the students. The teachers warned everyone of the nude scene. No teacher/staff stepped in & said “no, students DO NOT need to watch this version of the movie” wtf . I’m glad she is suing them, I’m so sorry to Olivia
I was a freshman in HS in 2010 & they showed this to us with the nude seen I remember the teacher said it was quick and if we didn’t want to see it close your eyes I just remembered this!
I saw it in class in middle school but our teacher forgot about the nude scene. She showed us a lot of film from the 60s that just didn't offend boomer's lax morals, like Jimmy Hendrix humping a speaker.
By OUR standards and even those of the 60s/70s not appropriate - however, the film is set in 14th century Italy so things were very different and morals were very different. That is what they were trying to portray. Should they have used actors who were legal age? Probably. These 2 could have turned down the film. They knew about the nude scenes. Also that interview in about 1967 where she's smoking and drinking all through it (at 15) - they both say how much better it was to have filmed those scenes that way. Now they say they feel exploited - how different from their other comments on it.
Thank you Karine for your respectful approach to the stories you tell. I truly appreciate your work. Let’s also remember that Olivia was dealing with crippling anxiety which developed roots very early in her life. Sometimes you have to prioritize your mental health and well-being before battling out issues. Much love ❤
I have read her autobiography and she stated that she and leonard whiting were payed less and had to work for long hours. While filming there was an issue with the audio so they had to film the audio separately in a studio. How exhausting! She also named all the men who tried to take advantage of her including a famous indian celebrity.I am indian so i was shocked to find out about it because i had always respected that indian actor up until then.
Good job. I think climate of this subject now, and it's even "trendy" to address this now has a lot to do with it. I also think Zefferelli was a very powerful person, and I'm sure they are still under threat after exposing this now. Zefferelli admitted to being sexually abused by a priest, but claimed, "...I suffered not harm", from the experience. Go figure.
I read the studios made her eat salads during R&J, no spaghetti. I read her 2018 memoir Girl On The Balcony. It was really good. They should have sued decades ago, or their parents should have, if it bothered them that much. I was only 1 when the film came out. But I have seen it numerous times.
They should've read their contract first. If it required a slim actress then that is what she ought to have been. That was her job to stay slim. Those costumes must have cost a fortune. 🐝
They were children. I watched that interview a while ago. They are obviously uncomfortable and awkward. Almost like they were told what to say, like it was scripted, but they don't believe what they are saying. It's crazy.
Ever since I saw Olivia Hussey in Romeo and Juliet, she has been my standard of beauty- - with almost no makeup, those almond eyes and oval face. So talented and beautiful. I wanted so to look like her
Neither Olivia or Leonard looked very emphatic when asked if they thought it was better to do it in the nude and that it helped the movie. They definitely were taken advantage of with their young age and inexperience. Probably did not want to voice their opinions or else they lose their career. I wonder if this is why Leonard went off to do theatre instead of film more movies.
They had the option to not do the film at all once they'd read the script. I do agree they were too young and they should have perhaps used older actors for the roles.
There was a miniseries she acted in called the Last days of Pompeii (1984). My brother and I still watch it annually since we were very young, and she was always my favorite character. I watched Romeo and Juliet since she was in it, and have always wondered about who she was, and admired her for her talent and beauty. Thank you for doing a video on her Karine! On my own I couldn't find much on her.
I agree 100% with your estimation of the whole situation…. They had NO voice back then, especially if you were a young woman. And sometimes it takes looking back on life to realize how a situation affected you for your entire life. They need justice!
They did however have the choice to say no to the film. Guess fame and fortune meant more than their dignity - they knew there were nude scenes involved when they signed on to do it and even said in an interview how it was better that those scenes were done nude. - all while she smoked and drank her way through the interview at 15 -
May this underrated, gorgeous actress rest in the sweetest & perfect peace. 🖤❤ My favorite movie with Ms. Olivia Hussey is "Black Christmas". It's gloomily ironic that she has passed during the Christmas season.
I love her in Black Christmas and IT. I remember in HS, we watched Romeo and Juliet, this version and the Leo DiCaprio version. I feel so badly for her, I never knew she was abused. She's a beautiful and gentle soul.🖤
Definitely my favorite version of Romeo and Juliet. She had such an angelic, doll like face. So beautiful. There really should be a law against nudity for minor actors. There was no reason to actually show bare skin. Suggesting of it while them laying in bed was enough
11:54 They're both so pretty. But they're definitely uncomfortable. Idk why the scene was necessary. I watched the movie in 8th grade and we skipped thru that part in class.
I know that version of Romeo and Juliet but my school showed us the Leonardo DiCaprio version in 10th grade. I’m glad my school knew better than to further exploit a child just to show a movie.
R.I.P. Olivia Hussey Eisley I watched your movie Romeo and Juliet throughout my life countless number of times. You will be missed. GD Bless you and your family.
She was fifteen he was sixteen . He seemed very uncomfortable and she looks very anxious .Zefferelli was very famous and powerful he could effectively destroy their careers. they were teenagers what are people talking about this was criminal behaviour from the adults I don't know how zefferelli got way with it.
I totally understand where she’s coming from. But, honestly….this is like 50 years after the fact. I get it. Instead of filing a lawsuit she should NOW be a leader in advocacy against abuse of children in film.
Exactly - they've had 50 years to decide ooops that was wrong. They're just jumping on the bandwagon and honestly it belittles those who suffered real abuse on film sets. I get it that they were young and convinced to do the film but they knew those scenes were in it. She said it an interview that she was dreading it but they both agreed it was better for the film (although probably what they had to say). BTW she drank and smoked her way through that interview at age 15 so I don't really think was was exactly a shy retiring wallflower. As you said, maybe get involved in making sure that young people are properly cast and treated on sets and that actors in nude scenes are actually legal age to be doing them.
It's sad that the director took advantage of 2 very young teenagers by tricking them into taking their clothes off and have the whole world 🌎 see both of them without clothes on in the movie resulting in anxiety disorders in their future work and relationship difficulties all the rest of their lives
Before I make my comment I'll note that I have a master's in forensic psychology. That clip looks like they were coached. It actually was textbook. It looked exactly how child coaching is described: avoiding eye contact by looking down or away, fidgeting and rocking and shaking, hesitation before answering. It's all there. A lot of people don't consider teens children but they are and can be coached and influenced just as easily as a younger child.
That is my favorite Romero and Juliet movie. As to the publicity surrounding the “porn”. Well those of us regular folks who were raped and abused cannot file suits against those who inflicted the pain. It was a different time back then. I am 70 and still have flashbacks from attacks starting when I was 10. It’s okay to file suit for awareness, but don’t line your pockets, be activists and support sexual violence organizations and bring awareness to this problem that has been around since beginning of time.
Well said. It does not only happen to stars and actors. It happens to all and sundry. It happens all over the world every day and it happens In Our own homes where we should feel the most safe. Making money out of it is to me disgusting. Calling out the peeps is important however, for my generation they mostly dead, so not much we can do about it. Besides we were brought up with what happens I. Your house stays in your house. And it mostly did. Now you have a generation of victims and poor me that are making all those fancy Dr's very rich indeed. Different strokes for different folks, as for me I would never cry in the public papers for all to see. 🐝
Kids & s3x scenes shouldn’t even be a thing. However alot of ppl like Kimora though young are coached to be ok with things while the money is good then come back & claim victimhood. She should sue her parents not the network
I am close to Olivia Hussey's age and I must have seen Zefferelli's "Romeo and Juliet" at least 25 times. I appreciated Hussey and Whiting's beauty and talent. As a teen aspiring actress I admit I was jealous of Hussey. I dreamt of playing the part of Juliet and I wouldn''t have had any problem with the delicate and tasteful nudity in the film. The "nude" scene takes place immediately after their wedding night. Whiting had a beautiful body and Hussey's "nude scene" was so fast I barely noticed it. These two kids are about to be separated forever while alive and they will die together within a few days. Bravo to Genius Zefferelli and his beautiful film. There have since been two versions of Romeo and Juliet rekeased since Zefferelli's, the 1997 one set in "Verona" Florida with Claire Danes and Leo DiCaprio . Romeo belongs to a gang resembling either the Jets or the Sharks and Juliet's suicide is by a bullet to her temple. The 2010 film starred Haile Steinfeld and a handsome young man whose credits were primarily modeling whose name I forget. It reeked of fear of offending anyone and consequently was difficult to watch. Also the Bard's beautiful language was rewritten numerous times. To me that is sacreligious. As an aside I believe Whiting was 517 and Hussey 16 when the wedding night scene was shot on a closed set. 16 is the age of consent in Italy where the film was shot.
Go back and look at an interview they did together in 1967/1968 and they talk about the nude scenes and say it was better to have done it that way - all while the FIFTEEN year old Olivia is smoking and drinking during the interview. Yes they were far too young and by today's standards it was deplorable. They were not blindsided, however, they knew before filming that there were nude scenes. They could have said no and let them cast other people but again the thought of making a film and fame was clearly ore important to them at the time. You can't come along 50 years later and say, oh hmm, I've changed my mind and feel exploited.
Karine, all of you videos are so well done. I always learn something new even if I know the main subject. I recall Olivia Hussey being considered “difficult” after this movie came out. My how the time have changed. I have a problem though, sometimes your background music gets a little intrusive. You have such a lovely voice, and so relaxing, sometimes the music lessens that for me. Thank you for all you do.

Hi Karine! Loved the video on Olivia. I wanted to ask if you would consider doing one on Kathleen Beller, the beautiful actress from the 1980's nighttime soap opera "Dynasty." Thsnks for all that you do! 😍
Wow. I haven’t heard anyone speak Olivia Hussey’s name in decades. The first movie I saw her in was Romeo and Juliette- we had it on vhs when I was a kid. I wish her strength and victory over the sicko freaks at Paramount. There’s no reason that minors should EVER be nude on film. There are literally infinite ways that they could have shot that scene without exploiting those kids. “Tastefully shot” or not- nude minors simulating sex on camera is still kiddy pR0n. I despise “Hollywood”.
There isn't a single person working at Paramount that was there in 1968. Would you want to have someone try to sue you for something someone else may have done decades earlier? NO!
People's idea of being devout is really off lol. Its like sayung just going to school makes you studious. The fact that she went nude shows her family life wasnt that devout. Having a home oratory is standard for all Catholics, rich or poor, devout or agnostic

I wanted so to look like her
Her beauty is completely natural. She is blessed!
Olivia's chin is sharp and pointy whereas an oval face has a more rounded softer chin. I think her face shape is inverted triangle.
@@Ri57490 Yes, I believe you're right
Even during that time period why they thought it was ok for kids to have nude scene. That’s sick
YOU DID MY REQUEST ON OLIVIA THANK U
well said! Really saying it for what it is. Intelligent commentary
- all while she smoked and drank her way through the interview at 15 -
Some people may or may not remember, for us horror fans, she played on the original IT tv movie..she played Bill's( Richard Thomas) wife
Don't forget Slasher movie Black Christmas from 1974.
🖤🖤🖤 Thank you for this video.
May this underrated, gorgeous actress rest in the sweetest & perfect peace. 🖤❤ My favorite movie with Ms. Olivia Hussey is "Black Christmas". It's gloomily ironic that she has passed during the Christmas season.
Great video as always! By the way her second husband Akira Fuse’s surname is pronounced like ‘who say’ :)
I love her in Black Christmas and IT. I remember in HS, we watched Romeo and Juliet, this version and the Leo DiCaprio version. I feel so badly for her, I never knew she was abused. She's a beautiful and gentle soul.🖤
Rip 12/28/24 ❤❤❤❤ thank you for making this video I love like literally all of your videos ❤❤❤
Can you do Aisha Tyler? I love her. She’s such an underrated actress.
Definitely my favorite version of Romeo and Juliet. She had such an angelic, doll like face. So beautiful. There really should be a law against nudity for minor actors. There was no reason to actually show bare skin. Suggesting of it while them laying in bed was enough
Her daughter has the same look. Her name is India Ensley. She was in Secret Life of the American Teenager.
You shouldn't promote a movie as being your 'favourite' when there is such a disgusting scene in it where children are exploited
@@Ri57490 I am quite capable of liking a project and not agreeing with it's content entirely. Do not tell me how to think and feel
Good for them, no one needs to see naked children simulating sexual acts.
RIP Olivia Hussey
11:54 They're both so pretty. But they're definitely uncomfortable. Idk why the scene was necessary. I watched the movie in 8th grade and we skipped thru that part in class.
Stunning natural beauty, and so talented. She deserves justice.
One of the best compliments I ever got was when people said I looked like her. She was so beautiful.
I know that version of Romeo and Juliet but my school showed us the Leonardo DiCaprio version in 10th grade. I’m glad my school knew better than to further exploit a child just to show a movie.
Thanks for making this. I have always liked her movies and watch her daughter's films as well. It's so interesting to learn what's below the surface.
She is the only Juliet that comes to mind when I hear of Romeo and Juliet. A classic beauty!
This shouldn't even be a questionable claim or lawsuit. In some societies, child abuse including marriage to one is accepted. This isn't one of them.
she was above the age of consent in Italy
Before I make my comment I'll note that I have a master's in forensic psychology. That clip looks like they were coached. It actually was textbook. It looked exactly how child coaching is described: avoiding eye contact by looking down or away, fidgeting and rocking and shaking, hesitation before answering. It's all there. A lot of people don't consider teens children but they are and can be coached and influenced just as easily as a younger child.
My high school teacher made us watch this in English and told us to pay attention to the naked scene of them 😮
That is my favorite Romero and Juliet movie.
thank u for all the rare pictures, shes so beautiful!!
Kids & s3x scenes shouldn’t even be a thing. However alot of ppl like Kimora though young are coached to be ok with things while the money is good then come back & claim victimhood. She should sue her parents not the network
I hope they win their law suit! It's so obvious what they've been through
🖤just love this actor. I hope they both prevail.
A combination of shame, embarrassment, guilt & afraid!!
God she was so gorgeous
breath taking
Go back and look at an interview they did together in 1967/1968 and they talk about the nude scenes and say it was better to have done it that way - all while the FIFTEEN year old Olivia is smoking and drinking during the interview. Yes they were far too young and by today's standards it was deplorable. They were not blindsided, however, they knew before filming that there were nude scenes. They could have said no and let them cast other people but again the thought of making a film and fame was clearly ore important to them at the time. You can't come along 50 years later and say, oh hmm, I've changed my mind and feel exploited.
R.I.P Beautiful 🖤
The case has been dismissed.
I love her portrayal as The Virgin Mary in the movie Jesus of Nazareth ❤
Me too
Karine, all of you videos are so well done.
Thank you for all you do.
she`s 72 years old they did this back then (1968?) how about Maria Schneider in Last Tango in Paris (1972) she was raped...... Wasn`t her mother around for this??? I BLAME THE PARENTS.......
She is so lovely! I wondered, however, why the R & J scene was allowed when I saw it in high school.
Omg ! I found her so enchanting and stunning when I watched her in Romeo and Juliet in middle school. Also i dont know if anyone remembers this show lmao , but her daughter played a character named "Ashley" on the show "The Secret Life of An American Teenager" that used to play on ABC family turned freeform during the late 2000s/early 2010s and she is a SPITTING image of her mother and soooo beautiful too ! . God that show was so cringe but I was sat every week lmao
I had no clue that’s her mom 😱
India Eisley
Hi Karine! Loved the video on Olivia. I wanted to ask if you would consider doing one on Kathleen Beller, the beautiful actress from the 1980's nighttime soap opera "Dynasty." Thsnks for all that you do! 😍
They were 15 enough said
Her daughter played on this family channel show India Eisley is her name.
RIP Olivia 😔
NO!
🖤Great work! Always enjoy your videos.
I hope she succeeds in the case. ❤
People's idea of being devout is really off lol. Its like sayung just going to school makes you studious. The fact that she went nude shows her family life wasnt that devout. Having a home oratory is standard for all Catholics, rich or poor, devout or agnostic
I need to binge watch all your videos ✨
Leonard has a nice musical voice as well.
