Great accomplishment at your age, RAA! I just turned 70 and no intention of slowing after 40yrs of cycling with a good bit of racing. You just don’t let the old man in 😅
What a lovely film. Being 70 myself in a few months ….remember very well from my road racing during the late 60’s and 70’s Colin and his Holdsworth pro.team…
@@rattyfingers8621 Well done - orange colour I presume. I bought my first serious bike from Colin back in the early 80's. It was a Holdsworth Equipe - the cheapest one they made. @@CarrieHillFilmsAbsolutely. I will be 92 next week, still riding a road bike and still wearing Lycra. Obviously not very fast or very far any more, but I helped a bit with that by adding a simple e-assist friction drive kit to the bike two years ago. Helps with the hills quite a lot, which had become a bit more difficult in recent years.
I'm really pleased to hear you're still enjoying riding at nearly 92 Vince, you're a fine example to us all 🚴🏻♂️. And a very Happy Birthday for next week 🎂.
This is great. I'm 52, but hope to be able to still be riding well into my 70s. This also reminded me of when i was an aspiring cyclist in my teens and getting absolutely smoked by a fellow in his 70s while on a club ride. Later found out he was the current US masters national TT champion at the time.
Keep at it. I'm 78 and this morning achieved a personal best on a hilly ride I've been doing for about 16 years, so hopefully you have plenty of good years left to ride.
I'm just so happy to find this, I moved to Newton Abbot in 1988 & joined the Mid Devon...Colin gave me handslings up the last hills home on the Sunday clubruns, terrified me my pulling his jersey off over his head no hands while bumping bars with me on the same rides....thought I was going to knock him off as a newcomer to group riding...he was an utter beast on a bike and a total gentleman, may you rest in peace. I'm now 60 & still riding strong! 😎
Hi Steve I also lived and worked in Torbay at that time and rode with the Mid Devon Cycling Club. I well remember struggling together to to keep up on the harder training rides. Recall how tough and strong Colin was. Absolute beast. No longer riding but keeping fit. Greetings from Australia.
That's brilliant, I only learnt about Tommy Simpson the other day. This was such a nice film and is inspirational for us older riders to keep on plugging away.
I bought my first bike, a Peugeot Criterium from Mr Lewis's cycle shop in Paignton in the late 1970's. Does anyone remember Dave Bedwell who worked there, another great cyclist, who rebuilt my rear wheel so I never broke another spoke. As I didn't know much about racing in those days I didn't appreciate their achievements until much later. Many thanks for a great film
Thank you for writing and I'm glad the film brought back memories for you with your first bike coming from Colin's shop. I don't know the other chap but perhaps someone on here does? Sounds like he did a great job! 😀🚴🏻♂️
I’m 71 too, raced back in the mid to late 60’s then came to Australia, there wasn’t much road racing then so didn’t carry on which I now regret. My bike back then was a Holdsworth. Still ride charity events but no racing. Thanks for the great trip down memory lane. I do remember the days where you could leave your bike outside your house and it would be there hours later. Not now in Oz and I guess not now in the UK either. Thanks again.

I'm sad to say that Colin passed away in 2022 but his legacy is continuing to inspire others to keep riding. I'm really pleased you got back to cycling and enjoy the club rides 😀🚴🏻♂️
Lovely film. Always remember Colin Lewis Cycles (when it was in Manor Road) where my dad bought me my first road bike in 1980. All I knew was Colin Lewis was an ex pro racer but never really cottoned on to the fact that he was quite so special until a lot later. The fact that he was still racing, and racing well, into his 70's is inspiration enough for me.
Great little film. It was a new name for me in the world of British cycling. Admired his stance on not wanting to ride for a European team because of the drugs. Was still riding hard in his 70's, gives me some hope for the future. Sorry to see that he passed last year, RIP Mr Lewis.
Colin Lewis, and Les West, probably the best two riders of their generation. I was never of a standard high enough to race with Colin, but did do loads of miles with him on the Falcon training camp in Majorca.
It was, until the road went up hill. He gave me some of his frame transfers, to go on my bike. I think i'm right in saying that Dave (Iron Man ) Bedwell worked in Colin's shop as wheel builder.@@CarrieHillFilms

This is so great! I used to ride with Colin when I was a member of the Mid Devon Road Club. He was a super friendly and helpful person who was a tough as nails. In the 80s the MDRC - where Colin was Chairman and defacto ‘directeur’ - the training and racing was as hard as hell. But those were super happy days.
Truly wonderful piece of film, reminiscent of ‘Milk Race:On and On that features Les West who was a teammate of Colin’s back in the Holdsworth heydays and I’ve had the pleasure of riding with many times. Thanks so much for posting.
Colin handed us a bottle at a race about ten years ago down in Devon. I was not one of his riders but he offered it, on a climb with a strong sling as I went over the top, with a word of encouragement. Still have the bottle, one of my prized possessions. I’m old enough to remember who the great man is 😉👌

You made here a lovely documentary on a charming figure of cycling. You managed to portray him and his own story with emotions and poetry. Great film about an incredible man. I was in the same peloton as him (I'd hesitate to say I raced with him) several times in the mid-1980s when I was in my early 20s - he was handing it to lads 20 plus years his junior, even then. I got to know him better, later, at the shop. Perfect gent, hard as hard can be on the bike, a remarkably kind and approachable person off it.
Thank you very much. That's great you got to race (you were still in there!) with Colin and saw what an incredible rider he was and yes, a very kind person too 🚴🏻♂️
Had the privilege of knowing Colin and working with him a little. Total legend. Chicken leg in the jersey? Tin foil on his head? (4:48) Completly awesome!
I knew Colin well, right up to his final years… I was privileged to go to his home and listen to his stories of getting in breakaways with Gimondi and Merckx , how he took up cycling after a bet with his mate that he could get into the Olympics … he was one of a kind, lovely bloke and an artist too.
I'm glad you knew Colin and got to hear some of his stories first hand, it was amazing to think of the cycling history he was part of. And indeed he was one of a kind.
For me there is a certain atmosphere about racing in the 60's and 70's. The cyclists all seemed super tough, with ill fitting bikes, long days in the saddle and just eating what they could to keep them going. Really enjoyed that, a nice little reminder of those days.
Greetings. I stumbled on this by chance and recalled Colin's name and face instantly. I scrimped and saved my paper round money to buy my first 5-speed Raleigh Arena from him for 52 pounds - must have been late 70's. I then bought my Holdsworth from the shop in Chelston a few years later. I'm 60 this year and fitter than I have ever been in my life. I did Pug Major in Feb this year and want to do some of the other famous climbs around Europe. It's wonderful to see him still riding at 71! Really moving. Got to agree with you, Alan; absolutely awe-inspiring! I just turned 65 and for some time now been dreaming of donning some cycling kit and racing again, as I did back in the late 80's. May the knees be with us!
In 2003, I had the pleasure of spending a week on a training camp in Spain which Colin led. He was an absolute gentleman, had time to speak to everyone, willing to pass on help and knowledge to all riders but still had it in 'spades full' at 60 (as he would have been then)
This film I think was made in 2013 as Colin now must be in his 80's. He lived around the corner from me in St Marychurch, Torquay so I knew him and his Mum and Dad. I remember my father brought my first proper bike from him when he worked at Brants cycles in St Marychurch next to the Links Hotel. It was a reward for failing the 11 plus exams Colin was then building his sports bikes out of bits and bobs. My second bike was bought from him when he had his shop in Manor Rd. Preston, Paignton. He was always the most modest of men and I hope still is. Thanks for bringing a few cherished memories back to an old man 76 and still cycling albeit slowly.
Gosh this is bringing back memories. I lived in Western Road and saw Colin going off on his rides some Sundays. I remember Brants and used to deliver newspapers there and browse the bikes all lined up. I remember the Links too. I bought a couple of bikes from Manor Rd and remember him giving me a basic tip on getting some toe clips to improve my riding efficiency. I managed to run my Holdsworth into the back of a Mini Metro on a wet Saturday morning in Fleet St. I thought I was for the chop but a couple of nuns got out and fussed over me for a bit. The frame got bent and shortened the wheelbase by about 2 inches, so I ended up selling it for a nominal sum. Best wishes for the cycling - there is too much traffic in the UK, I find, and take more enjoyment from trips abroad.
Fantastic film, thank you for making it!! Have never heard of Colin but he looks like a sound man!! PS My 2nd favourite team are Torquay Utd,maybe thats why this video came up on my UA-cam channel!!
Great living life story! Never slow down to LET the old man in 😅 I’ve a good crew of retirees to cycle with constantly challenging each other. I’m recovering from an “un-ceremonious dismount” AC joint seperation snd a bit stir crazy to be back on the bike. Love dropping those 1/2 lifers when I can and trying to hold those really fast wheels. You’re an inspiration!
Thanks Colin. I’m back riding again both road and mountain bike. Hope the weather is nice and your rides are going well. You are an inspiration to multitudes!
Great to see cyclists from yesteryear. In the 60’s and early 70’s, we didn’t have the internet and were dependent on Cycling Weekly and monthly Cycle Sport for race reviews / results. Colin Lewis and Les West were two of the top cyclists in the UK at that time and Colin still looks fit.
I loved looking through the old footage 😀. I wonder if it made it more exciting as you had to wait for the news? Colin was always such a strong rider 🚴🏻♂️

I'm 65 and most/all of my old riding mates have hung up their cleats. I have to ride with much younger riders now which is a challenge but helps to keep me going and pushing myself.
Been riding for years, stopped recently (became too risky in the area I lived in, but now at the coast so maybe start again). Running is what keeps me moving now. Not into supplements, but I recently discovered the benefits of L-Citrulline, and it's transformed my running. Faster, longer and stronger up hills, and can push HR well beyond previous limits. Apparently, the benefits extend to cycling as well (study is available online). And one other benefit which senior guys might enjoy (but you can find that one yourself).
I don’t believe that the reporting delays added to the excitement but as the magazines were the only source of information, we read them all from cover to cover, adverts included.
I’m 71 and still riding quite a bit. Cycling itself inhibits all kinds of diseases including cancer, just ask Iñigo San Millán, Pogacar’s personal coach. He got his Ph.D on that very topic. You don’t have to race but high intensity intervals work just as well and you avoid the stupid crashes racers inflict on others. 😊
Great video. Inspirational. I’m 68 and still pushing myself. Race Across America team in 2021 finisher. I don’t want to stop riding.

What a lovely unassuming dear man!
In 2003, I had the pleasure of spending a week on a training camp in Spain which Colin led. He was an absolute gentleman, had time to speak to everyone, willing to pass on help and knowledge to all riders but still had it in 'spades full' at 60 (as he would have been then)
That sounds like a great trip (and I bet he worked you hard 😆🚴🏻♂️)!
so much in such a short film. terrific.
Thank you ever so much 😀🚴🏻♂️
This video is awesome 👏
Thank you so much 😀
Wonderful film! Well done to all involved and of course, happy that Colin took time to share his story.
Thank you very much.
Thanks for the upload, nice to remember early racing, while we watch the new gen rip up the roads
You are most welcome Mike, it's good to see how tough they were back along 😀🚴🏻♂️
Amazing film and person. Thank you for this.
Thank you very much indeed, it was a privilege to spend the time making this with Colin 🚴🏻♂️
Really interesting, amazing career
Fair play to him, I cycle home from work and I'm fecked at 51 this guy's almost in his 80s
Fit fast and clever!! Inspirational.
He certainly was! 😀 🚴🏻♂️
Great video! has given me inspiration especially now I have medical conditions. Nice one Colin!
Thanks Gary, I hope you're doing well and that cycling makes things a bit better😀🚴🏻♂️
Too short. but I could watch hours of old legends riding and chatting about yesteryear. well done!
Thank you 😀🚴🏻♂️
Ace film. Great bloke.
Cheers
Thanks Brian.
I'm glad you knew Colin from the early days and this brought some happy memories back. Well done on the cycling, keep it up! 🚴🏻♂️😀
"Vittoria sponge" - my favourite ever Freudian slip 😆
🍰😀
I had to read this twice before the penny dropped. Very good! Perhaps some Srambled egg on toast first?
Cheers Colin!
Lovely little film. And yeah, I am still on the bike.
Thank you and I'm glad to hear it 😀🚴🏻♂️
This is the kind of content that cheers me up. Greets from Belgium, Simon
... my dad never attend a race as well. Being a cyclist is kind of a loner game anyway.
Fantastic film, thank you for making it!! Have never heard of Colin but he looks like a sound man!! PS My 2nd favourite team are Torquay Utd,maybe thats why this video came up on my
UA-cam channel!!
You're most welcome, thank you for writing and I'm really pleased you liked it 😀 🚴🏻♂️
very cool
enjoyed it very much thank you
Thank you, I'm so pleased you enjoyed it 😀
Great living life story! Never slow down to LET the old man in 😅
I’ve a good crew of retirees to cycle with constantly challenging each other. I’m recovering from an “un-ceremonious dismount” AC joint seperation snd a bit stir crazy to be back on the bike. Love dropping those 1/2 lifers when I can and trying to hold those really fast wheels. You’re an inspiration!
I hope your recovery is going well and you'll soon be back to dropping the kids, never slow down! 😀 🚴🏻♂️
Thanks Colin. I’m back riding again both road and mountain bike. Hope the weather is nice and your rides are going well. You are an inspiration to multitudes!
Wonderful!
Thank you.
Enjoyed that thank you.
Thank you for watching 😀
Inspirational.
Legend
Way to go man , I'm 61 and hope to keep pedalling too 😊
You're only a young'un, definitely keep pedalling! 😀🚴🏻♂️
@@CarrieHillFilms hey I got a video of my 83 year old dad riding my ebike on my channel !
He looks like a cool Dad! 😀
Age 76,50 yrs. Cycling. Zwift and Strava have shown me amazing stats on us “old” cyclists.
Keep up the great work 💪🚴🏻♂️! I'm so impressed by all the comments from the seasoned riders and their achievements 😀🏆
nice work .insperation for all .cheers
Thank you 😀🚴🏻♂️
Great video.
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it 😀🚴🏻♂️
Nicely done, thanks
And thank you for watching 😀!

Well done Colin.
Colin was a brilliant racing cyclist along with great Les West In Holdsworth halcyon days then came July 13 with its tragedy Gil Taylor Bob Maitland were in shock as we met up for a Midlands race the following morning Colin, Barry Everyone must have been gutted we felt for them Muriel Maitland In floods of tears so well done Colin Happy NewYear To All Of Us for great memories inc Dave Bedwell John Perks Harry Reynolds are still Cycling in Midlands you will be happy to know Take Care John Turner
It's lovely to hear from those of you who knew and raced with Colin and that you're still cycling. Happy New Year to you too John 🚴🏻♂️.
Love that old school rim brake bike
Love this mate, superb. You are a great insperation and a good soul. ❤😊
Nice! Ride on.
Thank you 😀🚴🏻♂️
Thank you, really enjoyed the film. just subscribed!!
I'm pleased you enjoyed it and many thanks indeed 😀 🚴🏻♂️
I'm 65 and most/all of my old riding mates have hung up their cleats. I have to ride with much younger riders now which is a challenge but helps to keep me going and pushing myself.
That's great to hear, keep holding on to those wheels! 💪🚴🏻♂️
So good….
Well done, it sounds like you're doing great 🏃🏻♂️, keep going! 😀
I don’t believe that the reporting delays added to the excitement but as the magazines were the only source of information, we read them all from cover to cover, adverts included.
That's good they were so well appreciated!
Grande uomo ❤
I’m 71 and still riding quite a bit. Cycling itself inhibits all kinds of diseases including cancer, just ask Iñigo San Millán, Pogacar’s personal coach. He got his Ph.D on that very topic. You don’t have to race but high intensity intervals work just as well and you avoid the stupid crashes racers inflict on others. 😊
That's really interesting to read, thank you and keep enjoying the riding 😀🚴🏻♂️
I know a guy in Sydney Australia, who is still racing at club level at the age of 87!
That's fantastic, it's great to hear how many seasoned riders are still out and going well! 😀🚴🏻♂️
