I love when my kids try to kill my vw buzz too.. LOL. Keep that kid in the garage! We need more gear heads like us. Also, make sure your valves are set correctly. You can can run the exhaust adjusters a little loose. Not much though they will take up the most.

Set the carburettor a little bit rich and let some air leak in the exhaust collector (make a little hole in the exhaust collector curve).
