  • The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy this holiday season helping a local man gift $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho. Secret Santa is a real person who wants to remain anonymous and hopes to bless as many individuals in our community as he can.
Erica has always been an ambitious, driven young lady. She went into nursing because she grew up watching a brother suffer with chronic health issues. She received her CNA license at 16, LPN two years ago and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Sciences last year.
This past year has been especially difficult for Erica’s family. Her husband, Broc, was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease at age 25 - the same week they discovered they were expecting their second child. This is a rare, hereditary, terminal disease. Broc’s father passed away from this disease at age 42 after being diagnosed in his early 30s.
Each child has a 50% chance of inheriting this disease. It’s often described as a combination of having ALS, Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease simultaneously. It’s considered the worst neurological disease and causes a progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It’s often called the “Devil’s Disease.”
Broc’s six-year-old son, Gunnar, lives with his dad and Erica full time. He was diagnosed with Huntington’s over the summer and is in the middle stages. Juvenile Huntingtons is extremely rare and the younger symptoms begin, the more aggressive the disease is.
While Erica was expecting, Broc was no longer able to work or drive due to some of the neurological symptoms he was experiencing. He filed for disability and in March, when they could no longer afford to pay rent, they moved into her parents’ basement.
While Erica was recovering from a c-section with their 2-week old baby, the basement flooded from a neighborhood construction accident that mixed water with sewage. Their entire family was displaced and they stayed with Broc’s grandparents temporarily.
They recently moved into low-income housing but Erica is unable to work because she needs to care for her husband, son and two other children under two years old. They do not have a reliable car and will soon need a vehicle that is large enough for two wheelchairs.
Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves to pay Erica and her family a visit with some early Christmas gifts. Watch the video above to see the surprise!

Angel, demons, God, resurrection, turning water into wine, and the list goes on of things people believe. So if God exists and does all this. Many in the Huntington’s community now chose IVF to ensure the next generation will not be afflicted. Sadly due to expense and for other personal often religious reasons some do not want to do IVF with genetic testing. As someone with an unknown and likely genetic condition (I have had lots of genetic testing but still waiting for my whole genome to be scanned) did not have kids because would never forgive myself for passing on this level of suffering on top of other reasons. I understand that some have different views but would not wish the hell I’ve endured on my worst enemy. If gene mutations are known IVF would allow couples to avoid passing on many awful conditions. Sadly my geneticist tells me that many don’t feel the same way I do which she constantly brings up my plans for children. Some couples are given devastating news about themselves or their children and even though they likely know they have a genetic condition disclose in their geneticist appointments that they are in the process of conceiving another child. It shocks my geneticist every time so she never assumes anything.

A man on my district developed Huntingtons Chorea. Apparently his family didn't know what was wrong with him when he developed symptoms. They kicked him out. He ended up living on the street here in Portland, OR and in a garbage can behind a gas station. I became his guardian so I could get money to buy him food. I was able to keep it at a nearby firehouse. Of course, we didn't know the diagnosis at that point. Not until he threw a cup of hot coffee on someone at a convenience store. We were able to take him into custody, and from there he was sent for an evaluation. And that's how the very, very sad story evolved. He was from ID. Military man. Had a son. My fear was the kid was going to exhibit symptoms and the family would kick the kid out thinking he was a chip off the old block, just like his father, not knowing the extent of the father's problems. I still cry thinking about this. And what is happening to this woman and her family is tragic, beyond the imaginable. I hope the community will rally round but from what I've seen, they probably will. My heart goes out to you. And thank you Secret Santa....

Im sorry for your loss and can sympathize. I have the disease, as does two of my brothers, my mom, and 4 uncles. We're just lucky to have the variation that doesn't settle in until our late 50's. This is a terrible disease, but Im holding out hope that a cure is around the corner.

Secret'y Secret omg that's a lot of you who inherited it. I'm sorry to hear that. What do you mean you have the variation that doesn't hit till late 50's? You mean based on the count? Higher the count the earlier onset the lower the count later onset? How is everyone handling the fact they have the gene/disease? My other brother and I haven't been tested we don't want to know, just let fate take its course

One of my very first patients of my nursing career was a 32 year old wife & mother with Huntington's Disease. She became a prisoner to her own body and mind...a disease more cruel than its namesake, the Devil's disease. Thankfully, her young daughter had not inherited the gene & escaped the same fate. That was 20 years ago, but I will NEVER forget Julie for as long as I live. 💙💜💙
This family's story is absolutely gut wrenching & my heart just aches for them all. I'm so glad Secret Santa could help...they are truly deserving! Praying for a miracle.❤

What a burden this sweet young wife has in her life and she’s smiling. One thing I can tell from her demeanour and her smile and the fact that she is a nurse - this woman is a carer and will do whatever she has to do for her husband and children. Secret Santa could not have found a more deserving family. Whoever he is, I love your Secret Santa. May the Lord continually bless him and cause his storehouse to overflow with riches so he can continue to pour out love and help to those in need. These are truly the best videos! Every time I get to feeling like I've had it so bad, all I have to do is watch one of these videos and I am so grateful to God for every blessing no matter how small. I spent the last couple of years feeling sorry for myself; my mother died and a year later my only sibling died. I took care of both of them and had to quit my job. We had to sell our home that we had just finished remodeling because we couldn't afford the mortgage payments anymore because I hadn't been working. My husband is a service-disabled veteran who runs a small business but with the pandemic it's been a struggle. We had to move away from friends and the only family I had left, and I'd been unhappy until I started watching these videos. They planted a seed of gratitude in heart and have started praying for the benefit of each family I've seen on your videos making me wish I could do something for them. Thank you for blessing me with your videos!
