People say Uwe Boll is the Ed Wood of our generation. I happen to strongly disagree as Ed Wood was genuinely passionate about contributing to the medium artistically. Uwe Boll just saw a way to make some quick money and it shows in the "quality" of his films.
Boll and Wood have one thing in common: everything they ever touched turned into shit. That's where the similarities end.
Also I don't think Ed Wood ever wanted to beat the shit out of his critics....or set up a boxing ring to fight said critics
Agreed. Ed Wood seemed to genuinely care about his craft and tried to better himself as a director. Uwe Boll's solution to criticism was the equivalent of a elementary school bully and he never tried to better his "skills" at all.

Uwe Boll used to be on same level but he used German tax loop holes to exploit and became more and more angry as he treated Critics like bullies. He even posted a video of him pissed off that no one wanted to fund his recent movies on gofund me or those kind of sites where he didn't even earn half of the goals.
For as poor as his movies were, I have a great deal of respect for Ed Wood. The man did what he loved in spite of all the poor reviews

I've been trying to reach you for two years BTW, There is a movie you MUST see, its called "The Wonderful Land of OZ" Its a Barry Mahon Crapfest that is NUMBING, It is one of the only things posted to my Channel. It needs to be reviewed, I've even tried GIVING copies to Rifftrax cast. It makes the Ice Cream Bunny look like Citizen Kane. Please check that movie out, you are the only one who could do it justice.

My guess is, it was shortened for copyright reasons. The original review has the song featured heavily, making the review, a bit tough to find but it is hilarious and worth the search.

Fun fact, the man playing the police inspector was Lyle Talbot, who was both the first live-action Lex Luthor and the first live-action Commissioner Gordon.
Say what you will about Ed Wood, but "we are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future" are the greatest opening lines of any movie.
Those lines weren’t written by Ed Wood. That was Criswell’s opening line his entire career, he used it long before he even meet Ed Wood.

Look at all the action movies and post apocalyptic films where the ladies have gone 6 months without a shower while out in the wilderness and still have flawless skin and hair, even though the guys have scraggy beards down to their belts and are caked in filth. I've been watching Z Nation lately and a couple of the male leads like Doc look like they havent seen a comb or bath in weeks or months and 1 of the female leads still has the same dye job as 4 years earlier before the apocalypse.
Some of the shots in this are surprisingly gorgeous, like the handing over of the top. It's a historically intriguing film as well. Mr Wood seemed like a really interesting human being, as well as Lugosi, in all his tragedy. I remember watching the Ed Wood film with Johnny Depp in theaters and really being moved as well as laughing 'til I cried.

I haven't watched the movie in full so I couldn't say for sure, but it kinda looks like the original content was intended to show a more sympathetic lean toward people who crossdress...then in post they realized "this doesn't condemn nonconformity enough!!" so they edited in ominous lightning bolts after otherwise harmless scenes and added all the bondage montages.
I got a good laugh out of "he liked doing housework...he was developing into a true woman!" I guess that's about as progressive as 50's could get about this kind of thing.
well, it is surprisingly progessive, even for modern day standards surprisingly.
I mean, the closest we got recently was a movie with a trans teen in it, and they were portrayed as selfish and immature, so.. yeah.
I'm mtf trans, and this is a harmless little thing, showing trans people in a positive light, for the most part. Other than the whole thing on how he has to change to continue being a man, as if it's that easy, or possible.
Yeah, I was honestly surprised that this wasn't more mean-spirited. Protagonist seemed like a nice person, there was a doctor explaining that sex reassignment is a thing, etc.
Maybe we can see some better trans characters in the near future.

I'm not saying this movie is good but I am impressed with how progressive its subject matter was for the time period it came out in.
I unironically like the film, both because of how daring and earnest it is, and because of the bizarre otherworldly atmosphere. And Lugosi is enchanting as always. I can see why it's one of David Lynch's favorites. Who would expect Ed Wood to have such genuine insight? “We were not born with wings, we were not born with wheels. But in the modern world of today, it's an accepted fact that we must have them. So we have corrected that which nature has not given us. Strangely enough, nature has given us all these things, we just had to learn how to put nature's elements together for our use, that's all. Yet the world is shocked by a sex change.”

This movie is weird af and the couple has no chemistry (probably because they were dating in real life and she didnt liked that he was a crossdresser), but that sweater scene is such a cute way of showing love and acceptence. The angora sweater was his favorite, she literally stripping to give him that gets me a smile every time, that should have been the end.

It's like Ed Wood wanted to make a movie loosely based on his own life, then he remembered "Oh yeah, I was supposed to be making a sex change flick!", and then threw together the other person's story at the last minute.

A fascinating movie. The writing and the symbolism deserve much contemplation. Shrinks through the decades must have had a field day with it.

Fun fact:Ed Wood was a transvestite, not actually trans. He didn't have gender dysphoria, he just really got a kick from women's clothes. He wore pants and a bra when serving in the Pacific. He was a very masculine looking man but he loved wearing women's pantsuits. His friends loved him.
Bela did this film when he in the grip of severe alcoholism. He was so bad usual booze didn't work. He drank methylated spirits. He did films like this as it was the one joy left to him.

@@visaman I'm not sure if it was gender/identity-related & more of a sexual kink for Ed, but fair point. A lot of the language has moved on from the 50s, so apologies for using an antiquated term. It's hard to determine whether or not by modern standards Ed could be regarded as trans, but accounts by his friends suggest he did it more as a turn on than an expression of his gender identity, but who knows. I will say whatever his reasons I actually have a soft spot for this film as it must be one of the earliest films that is sympathetic to folks who don't conform to gender norms. It is kind of hard to work out where Ed fits on the gender spectrum, & back then trans,non-binary,gender-fluid (and even fetishists)tended to be all (inaccurately)lumped together.It's fascinating as a cultural artifact of one man trying to figure it all out. I don't claim to have any sort of authority on the distinctions,(I'm bound to get a lot wrong, being cis) but I'll always defend anyone's right to live their truth.

Somewhere in this mess of choppy editing, nonsensical writing, and bizarre filler, is an interesting story about a straight man who likes to cross dress but worries it might cost him his fiancee.
It's crazy to think we got a film from the 50s more woke then alot of LGBTQ today. In the 50s you could still get lobotomized or castrated for being transgendered and he went out and made a film about the hardships of being trans.

Glen or Glenda is not really like the movies of today. This movie had a purpose. As you said, transgender people were basically outcasts and being openly LGBTQ+ was considered a death sentence in many circles. So it was a very brave and progressive thing for this kind of movie to be made...even if it was executed very, very poorly. But nowadays, the SJW community is just force-feeding this kind of stuff down our throats just because they can, even if it means putting identity politics before storytelling. And they're not at all subtle or polite about it, either.
Glen or Glenda: "We know that we deviate from the norm, but please find it in your heart to accept us despite our differences. If not, then all we ask is that you just leave us be."
Woke movies today: "Fuck you, we _are_ the norm! If you can't accept us, then you're a prejudiced conservative asshole and need to be cancelled ASAP!"

This movie is freaking ridiculous but I love it. It's harmless, cheesy, dumb and just really fun to watch. It doesn't offend me at all and it's honestly probably the most corny, positive LGBT film ever made, the rest of them being melodramatic tragedies.
Vonchy I honestly kinda got worried when I found out the subject matter and the year it was made in, but you're right. They didn't really do anything horrible in this and that's wonderful.
Especially the trend of cis men claiming trans roles, lauding themselves for how tragic and pathetic we all must be, while portraying us as all the negative stereotype.
mountainhun Well, back then I can't imagine it would've been easy to find someone who was Transgender (or at least was open with it). There are definitely movies that do harm now, but movies like The Danish Girl, I believe it was called, were really great even if it didn't have a transgender actor. So, while getting correct people for correct roles is important, I feel like it's the message and delivery that counts more. (I think the actor was male gender wise.)

Nicole Schoenhoft That actually sounds like it could be a really art filmy sort of analogy tonuse i the film. having a transgender woman dress as a man, like they used to, and then slowly changing so that by the end of the film, the main character, and in turn, the actor, have removed their costume to reveal the woman thst they always wanted to be. (By remove their costume, i mean slowly using less and less of the stuff that makes them look like a man, and finishing the film dressed like how they'd normaly dress in that time period).
I swear it was like Lugosi was in a whole other film that they just spliced in. That or that guy gave some crazy ass interviews!

Fun little fact: in Japanese Riko with a "k" is a perfectly acceptable feminine name. But in Spanish and English, Rico with a "c" is a masculine name. Unfortunately, it seems that my Mexican mom never mentioned to my Japanese dad that when spoken aloud, it doesn't matter because both spellings sound the same.
I watched this movie about a year ago, for the first time. I was entertained from beginning to end. It was too short. I was surprised how "out there" it was. I love Ed Wood even more, now. What a gentle soul he must have had. This is a movie about how grown ups are confusing and those of us, who don't take life too seriously, have to stick together.
To be fair that dress was clearly a summer dress and since you wore it in January the joke doesn't work. Eugh.

What??? A Movie from that time period that treats a transgender person as a human being? What??? I mean, it's still bad and the ending undoes a lot of the good that the movie built towards, but it did so much better than I thought it would.

Watched it...it's more a just a low grade zombie movie with a bit of Plan Nine references thrown in. Mr. Lobo is super obnoxious...but that's why I like him.

Ed Wood, by all accounts was a troubled, yet generous and kind-hearted man, who was sort of, well, hapless when it came to his movies. I think he saw his movies with the eyes of someone who sees what he loves, no faults, Bella Lugosi in his movies, and in the end, other directors are forgotten but most people remember Ed Wood.
