  • The Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail follows the winding course of the Colorado River between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero. The paved trail is easy going and heavily used by outdoor recreationists of all pursuits.
The Glenwood Canyon Recreational Trail is not just a path for outdoor recreation; it's a testament to the harmonious coexistence of human-made infrastructure and the preservation of natural wonders. Its ability to showcase the beauty of Glenwood Canyon while highlighting innovative engineering and environmental conservation makes it a truly interesting and inspiring destination for nature lovers and anyone interested in the intersection of human development and the environment. The trail is closed in winter and sometimes into the spring when the water level in the Colorado River is high. There are plenty of resting areas, as well as picnic sites, restrooms and fishing access points.
Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path may close based on current weather conditions. Travelers are urged to “know before you go.” Gather information about weather forecasts and anticipated travel impacts and current road conditions prior to hitting the road by visiting COtrip.org. For questions about Glenwood Canyon or the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path, please call CDOT Region 3, Monday - Friday at 1-970-243-2368 Ext. 9.

That is so cool that you guys actually rode this trail! Great video. You are correct, it is closed for flooding, but more recently, it is closed due to the threat of a mudslide. There was a forest fire in the canyon, and because of that now whenever there is a good rain, both the highway and bike path can get covered with mud. Another great trail that we ride is the Rio Grande Trail which runs from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. Perhaps you rode that trail during your stay?

Hi. Thanks again for pointing us toward that trail. We loved that area! We rearranged our trip home to stay another night so we could ride the Rio Grande Trail.

Thank you for this. When driving through the area two years ago we noticed the bike trail so I’m now just starting to look it up to do research to return there next month. Your video is helping me tremendously.

Hints from a local: spring runoff and mudslides cause the path to be closed. In the video you can see where the river was reconstructed because of strong mudslides. Also do a little fun historical research on the water power plant that you pass ;)

I used to live in Colorado and never did that trail which I regret. Perfect for an eBike for the long gradual slope. I did however ride around Garden of the Gods and no one will regret that one.

Gotta be careful on some sections of that trail, blind turns and narrow pathways.

Hi Pedro, You are spot on -- there are a couple of places you need to be careful. This trail was slightly unusual as everyone who was riding on it appeared to be cautious and not in a hurry. It was a nice change of pace. Thanks for watching!

I’ll pass on this trail. The highway is distracting and takes so much away from the view.

Thanks for taking a minute to comment. I certainly understand why you would say this trail doesn’t look appealing. We felt the same way initially and a viewer told us it was a “must see”. We felt very different about it when we were on it and found it scenic and while you knew the road was there, the way they designed it so it wouldn’t take away from the canyon was something you won’t see anywhere else.
