appellate courts dont "step in"
The way appellate courts work is, A) A lower court issues a decision, which in this case would be a criminal conviction, and B) the defense files an appeal to the appellate court on the grounds that the lower court failed to follow the law or proper procedure, at which point the appellate court actually has the jurisdiction to take some action if appropriate.
All of that would only occur if and when there is a guilty verdict. If he’s found innocent the point is moot because the prosecution cannot appeal.

This happens to people every day. I have been railroad right through a courtroom. The judges told me that they didn't care what the law said. I was in his courtroom, and he was the law. I was showing him the DOT handbook for CDL, and he told me that was not a law in his courtroom. It happens every day to good innocent people. 😢

Common people like you or me with no vast legal knowledge will decide the faith of the defendant. Her testimony might not be relevant to the analysts but they know that could be really significant to a jury or "touch the nerve of discontent". We need to see how this playout because we don't really know.

How can a defendant defend themselves if they are not allowed to freely speak to defend themselves in a court of law?
If what the defendent says is classified as secret service nonpublishable information, then there has to be clearance of all in the court, including lawyers jurors and judges and other staff, before the court begins.
In the same manner, what information is published needs to be cleared first by secret service.
However, inside the court, there should not be any hinderance in the ability of a defendant to freely speak to defend themselves. It is then up to the judge and the jurors to believe or not to believe that testimony of the defendant.
The jury already wants Trump to go to jail.
