Ray was the ONLY character who could match Blanche insult for insult. It was a crummy decision by the writers bringing Ray back, a classic old school character from the 70s just to have him die.
It was the easy way out I suppose, but a real cop out. It would have been harder to write a longer arc with Ray deciding to move back to Weatherfield, possibly introduce Tracy's half-sibling(s). I recall they brought back Dennis Tanner at one time and although he stayed for a while, the writers didn't really have an interesting storyline for him -- kinda wasted that character.
Maggie was often reduced to comedy, which she was brilliant at. But when Blanche and Ray had their crossed words in Emily's house, you can see what a pro she was, you believed every word that came out of Blanche's mouth was real and raw. I loved the fact that Ray returned just to reignite some old feuds with a smattering of the "old gang". Nowadays there're only Ken, Gail and Rita left from yesteryear. Even characters like Steve McDonald has been in it for 35 years, still feels like a recent addition in comparison to the likes of Deirdre, Blanche, Emily, Betty, Mike etc.
Ray did return in the Coronation Street television film Las Vegas, which showed Ray working has a barman in a hotel and having to put up with Vera Duckworth.
Reaching across it is rude no matter what the table size. Unless...one has been asked for something. Handing the asked for item over as it would be ruder to not pass them the item. I don't make the rules. I just read a lot. 🎉😂 Back in the 70s Upstairs downstairs got me on the subject. 🤷♀️🤣

I think he was brought back to be killed off. He never had a proper end in the 70s as the actor abruptly left.

Why does Dreary ask Ken to pass the butter, when the breakfast table is the size of a pocket handerkerchie?
