- How much power does a trials bike make? That’s something we’ve wondered for a long time, so we ran a 2020 GasGas TXT Racing 300 on our in-house dyno to find out.

It’s like a torque curve from an old V12 Jag. Incredible 👍
One of the funnest bikes ever made I’ve had heaps of them would recommend one for anyone who does enduro
i drive enduro and trial
Light and energetic bikes
Had a few over the years Sherco,gas-gas, fantic, & montesa epic for learning wheelies on and surprisingly fast when your in the longer road gears. Wish I never sold that Montesa with the Honda engine quite sort after nowadays.
Sounds like you still got a couple laying around?? A spare perhaps??!! I know what my username says but I thought of Zoidberg when I said it lol. And yes Im serious. :|
Funnest isn’t a word
That torque curved 😍 that’s how u know they tuned well
All about the Torque. Even the exhausts are designed to hold pressure in a certain way. They feel so much more powerful than the numbers.
The sticky trials tyre will be robbing a fair few horses.
Some years ago I did back to back runs on an old R6 race bike with a soft slick and a hard road tyre and it was just under 10hp difference!
Yep, I wish he did a second run on 3rd gear so we can see how much i the difference. I believe older betas has about 29HP@crank.
Super impressive power at such low RPM on a 2T. I build 2T's and have no doubts this thing was built and tuned perfectly.
Can you do the same test with a montesa or a beta 4 strokes? I'm so curious!
Incredible how it pulls from such low rpm. Gotta love 2-stroke
for a 300 that's really low torque and hp though, look how much more a 250 dirtbike has.

Wow. About half the horsepower and torque numbers you would expect from a modern 300 cc two stroke. And yet in the right hands they make these bikes fly from impossible position “A” to impossible position “B” with ease😳

Indeed, 2-6k rpms and you have almost all of it at your disposal :P
Amazing torque curve. Didn’t stutter or load up at full throttle from 1100 rpm. The carb is dialed.
Perfectly tuned for what it’s built for. Extremely nimble bikes

Torque is amazing!
He did the test in 5th gear!! We never ride the bike for power in 5th we ride it in 1st.

Very good information
You essentially have full Torque from idle to 7500 RPM. Damn....
That's why I was crap on my TY 80
Damn the idle on that thing sounds sick

Impressive torque curve. The bike didn’t hesitate or stutter at 1100 rpm at wide open throttle. The carb is dialed.

@@trox1366 your point
It will be interesting to compare it to 4T bike like Cota 4RT.
swapped my mx for 3min with a friend with a trial montesa 359 or something like that from 1980, had an accident, couldn't believe I had to start on 3rd gear ended on the floor fast
Buena prueba excelente!!
Hmmm...about 250 HP/Tonne and 95% torque available at 1,500 RPM...on a 65KG bike? This gives you a much better idea of what it's like to ride a modern trials bike. I've owned/ridden most categories of motorbike but my trials bike is more demanding , involving and engaging than the rest. It has got me into and out of some serious terrain...imagine; a mountain goat with an engine. ;-)
I would To see other trial brands to figure wether they really differ on their power curve !

Would be interesting to see what it would make with a "motocross" exhaust with an expansion chamber.
They are not ported for HP, only torque, so putting a 'motocross' style pipe on would only gain a limited amount if any.

Hahaha
I was kind of suprised, I was betting it would alteast make 25hp and ALOT more torque. But I guess the torque we feel is generated by the big ratio gearbox?
It's all from 1k revs, it's low torque is not far off a sports bikes figures below 2k

What gas were you using in this? My understanding is that a full-on trials bike is run off of specific types of race fuel, different than pump gas or premix.

@@krazed0451 the compression of the gp models is higher
essentially no difference whatsoever. very low output, it's the torque and gear ratio that makes the bike seem like they have power, when in fact - they are very underpowered for CC displacement. Which is why they very seldom need any engine work done to them, they are barely working.
the trial bike works slightly different from other road bikes. the rider would rev the rpm and store inertia momentium energy on the flywheel, and poping/sliping the clutch to control the energy release rather than just reving the throttle. in short, you can not justify a trial bike performance by just puting it on a dyno
Even without considering flywheel launches from standstill it pulls like a tractor, 2000rpm in 6 gear and it keeps climbing any hill.
@@Henrik.Yngvesson I never use the 6 gear on my txt300 to climb any hill, yet... 3rd/4th is my comfort zone
@@szzkf I have the 270 ES Contact, and I'm partially paraplegic so I don't do any advanced stuff other than a little log jumping and mainly use it as a trail bike that's small and light enough for me to handle on my own. 5th works everywhere, even from a stand still if you slip the clutch a bit. 6 gear is great for faster trails and roads. And due to my handicap it's great as I don't have to shift gears all the time while riding on gnarly trails and need my feet steady on the pegs.
When I'm finished with my Suzuki GP125 vintage race build I'm going to start on my ES 270 trials bike, will build a larger aluminium tank and a better seat and make a vintage style trial/scrambler.
@@Henrik.Yngvesson and putting an electric starter on your contact could be a great fun!
@@szzkf It has one and that's the reason I bought it, I can kickstart it but it's very heavy for me and out in the woods on a slope or difficult terrain I may not be able to so the electric starter is a great help.
I was riding downhill before I had my paragliding accident in 2016, and the trial bike on the trails reminds me so much of downhill riding as it's so smal and nimble and almost feel like a downhill bike.
can you try a vertigo? they say 30 hp more than double
yeah this is nuts, their dyno must have some issues :)
i am curious to see what would be the differences with a Street tyre instead of a trial one? I lean power wise

I thought trials bikes were all about torque . What is the torque from a dead stop to take off in the first few feet of movement at high rev ? Do the test again but this time from a dead stop rev the engine up and pop the clutch so it takes off as if you have a rock face in front of you . The torque thats made in as the tire starts to turn is what gets the bike up the rock . If you don't have the torque then the bike is no good . At .08 in the video you just put it in gear and started off at a low rev this would never happen in trials . This info the way you did it has no merit as far as trials go .

One big factor everyone is overlooking is gearing. Ever see the rear sprocket on one of these it's almost the size of the tire. Just like on a regular motocross bike you can gear it to what you want, Actually I geared down a couple teeth on my 450r rear sprocket to make it smoother on as motocross track.
They actually have a pretty small rear sprocket. Smaller than mx bikes 😅 I have a sherco st300 here. The internal gearbox has really short gears yes.
My friends trials bike is over 30hp
Like number 800
Include weight of said bike. That's a huge factor bud.
what?! 125 4 stroke power from a 300? I know its not meant for power but those stats a bit sad ngl
i thought they made like 40hp
Don't need a lot of power when it weighs like 68kg lol. In reality the riders are what make these trials bikes climb up stuff, the engine is really just there to give them a slightly better run up than a bicycle would.
Kind of disappointed in peak hp, thought it be little more than that
Engine brake like it can't seize
Answer: hardly any
The Yamaha works trials bike in Japan use a yzf 250 engine from Mx bike, they have some grunt
That’s it? Was thinking way more for a 300.
tuned for low end torque not hp. check out the curve and look how low peak torque is
Also consider a Gas Gas 300 probably weighs about 145# with gas and oil.
@@ridenm it weighs 67.5 no liquid
@@cowrider4029 So call it 160 lbs. with liquids. Put some helium in the tires and save a few grams ;-)
@@ridenm helium in tires is exaggerated😂😂 but yeah, 71/72 kilos with liquids
thats not true because it has 6 gears and it has 27 ps
Not going to last long if you don't pull in the clutch and let it get some oil by revving it a little while it slows down.
That old wives tale has been proven wrong over and over.
@@tieoneon1614 9 out of 10 secnarios you're fine but WOT on a dyno and then just chopping the throttle is asking for it to seize. Too much heat and inertia for the amount of fuel/oil delivered from the pilot. Seen it happen numerous times. Why wouldn't you just give it a few blips to get some fuel and oil in there for cooling and lubing?
If you have more info on this though I'd like to have a read of it 👍👍
@@MrSaltysReefTank There is several read ups on this, from the guys that raced and rebuilt Moto GP 2t bikes on the riders that engine brake at high rpm, and the ones that didnt and they reported that the piston/rings looked no different at rebuild time. And honestly with the amount of weed whackers, outboards, bikes etc if this was really something to worry about you would hear these motors seizing A LOT. But u dont
That's surprisingly flat for a 2 stroke
How to destroy a gearbox
16 HP in 300cc only????!
Trial need torque, not power
Maximum rpm in top gear, then chopping the throttle is NOT good for 2 strokes. 1 of the quickest ways to wreck the engine. Bore, piston, heat seizure. Please stop!!.
I was thinking about the same thing and he even kept the throttle closed ~9000-1000rpm
You think it was running hot at 16hp lol
300cc 16hp ? where all the horses go ? maybe half of them still asleep.
It's tuned for high torque at low revs, just look at the diagram
@@zombiewoof5257 Zappa, you never disappoint. Thank you!
@@mikehansenHamburg Indeed!
Please stop saying it is about torque, unless you mean lack of torque. This same 300cc motor in enduro/mx tune makes twice as much as this, through the range. A 250 4t will make more through the range. It is a purpose built motor and it is perfect for what it is for and if they wanted, they could get a lot more power and torque out of it.
Trials bikes are so strange to me. 16.1 hp out of a 300 2 stroke is terrible, but obviously they don’t need more power than that.
Imagine a trials bike with a 450
You didnt pull the CLUTCH IN!! ITS A 2 STROKE THEY NEED THROTTLE TO KEEP THE OIL INJECTOR OPEN
It's premix
And will soon need a rebuild as you’ve revved the bollocks off it and allowed it to overrun. You should never allow a two stroke to overrun.
What is overrun
@@komerka35 enginebreak
Why should you put gas on and when its go down you put in gear thats sound very unproffesionel. And sounds not good.
This was exciting
Said no one ever
Put an MX pipe in it, now that would make an exciting trials bike...
@@gearloose703 No not really. There is a reason why trial two strokes don’t have expansion chambers in the exhaust
that's all ???.... what a disappointment :-( always thought they got more torque than a 2T 300 enduro ?! they look so strong "in action"
It's because what you feel as torque is totally different to measured torque. This thing pulls very hard from the low end relative to anything else, so it feels like a lot of what we call torque. The enduros make a bunch more real torque, but it's up high so we talk about that as "power". You don't think of a 125 making almost as much torque as a 250F, even though it does, just because of the weird way we use these words.
I love this mentality that if got it, might as well do a pull to see!
A shame you can't pop the clutch on a dyno pull... to try and get as close to the explosiveness that these bikes give you when "you" launch them. I can't ride a trials bike, properly that is!
I'm a flat earther from sandy, silty, and swampy Texas! All I could ever do is ride fallen timber or weld a course with timber on poles that are set on concrete. *You Californians really have it all...*
