I come here every year to repost this video to my Facebook page. This song is my favorite song by a female in the 70's, maybe of all time. It made such an impact on me as a 12 year old girl, back in 1970. I went out and bought the single and played it over and over and over. It's magnificent. The voice, the power, still gives me chills - and the Edwin Hawkins Singers just take it over the top.
1970. And we thought we were going to change the world. Throw out the old establishment. Embrace each other, because all you really need is love. Sigh. Boy, did we ever screw that up. God have mercy on us.
I’m a proud gay man….but when I was a child, I was absolutely in love with Melanie. Cut to 60 years later, when I married my husband (on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea)….this was the song we danced to at our wedding. Thank you Melanie.
This is at ANTI WAR Protest song please don’t try to steal it .! How many people died because that war ! It is also not about Global Warming , or save the whales !
I just found this beautiful song (2022) after not hearing it for decades, I remember back in 1970, a kid of 18 hearing it on the radio and instantly grabbed my soul way down deep, even as a young kid..it somehow spoke to me, call me weird, but honest to God it did y'all..so everytime I would hear it, it took me on a magical, inspirational journey..now today, I am 70 years old and coming to the end of my time on this planet..I only pray when our Father calls me home this 🙏 wonderful masterpiece of brilliance will be one of the last things I hear, as I journey into God's loving grace ♥ 🙏❤🕊🙏
I am watching this AGAIN only this time it is during a pandemic, where the times are uncertain and our way of life has been altered. This song has always been a blessing, I was raised with it and have carried an undying love for it and it’s message into adulthood ( well and let’s not NOT mention our sweet MELANIE )! It has a whole NEW meaning now, and it would be the one thing I would wish EVERY single person to give a listen 🎶 be blessed all!
The sound of these singers together is the sound of angels and a brief connection with something larger than life, whatever happened to music like this? The music of 60s and early 70s has never been bettered.
Truly wonderful song and performance from our beautiful Melanie… ironically the audience looked a lot like the “those who stand and frown” generation! 👉☺❤
I remember seeing her at UToledo!! Man did she ROCK!!! Electric set!! Blew all of those university of toledo students AWAY,,,!!! One of my FIRST CONCERTS,,!! Back around hmmm 1971 I guess.

Melanie can surely sing, totally amazing and she looks like she is having so much fun. The Edwin Hawkins Singers just spectacular, I have a cassette tape of theirs around here somewhere!!
This is Holland in 1970. watch the audience. the people are absolutely STUNNED. They had never seen/heard anything like this before. Just BLOWN AWAY! Speechless.
The Melanie concerts I went to had a very different looking audience than this one lol. I sure do miss those days but am so lucky to have experienced them. Thank you for all your great music and your beautiful presence Melanie. XOXOXO
Holland in 1970. The show (Voor de vuist weg; Willem Duys) and those good Dutchies had never seen/heard ANYthing like this before; they're just speechless; totally blown away by that kinda 'power'. Amazing.
This is going to sound gratuitous, maybe even campy! I'm literally crying about the dimming of the American torch. But We're laying it all down! Our candles do hold back the dark. We ARE the White Birds and we'll always smile!
Everything about this is amazing: the EH singers, the piano and drums, the handclaps, the poetry of the lyrics and the intense, otherwordly voice of Melanie. RESPECT!
I love Melanie since I was a child, everyone on stage is happy and partying but then there was this Audience Shot. The actual Audience scared the crap out of me, they all looked like programmed zombies in the Twilight Zone. OMG ,Melanie is so pretty! XXXXX
She was quite the looker, her voice wasn't bad either. I believe if the audience would have been at least 15 years younger, preferably 20 they might have had a different reaction. I'd say most of them are thinking "what is this hippie shit"?
When I seen that audience I was so surprised . How she ever performed like she did for them is a great testament to who she is . She moved them .. as much as they could be moved . She made a huge difference in their life . This was a whole other time and era . YAY Melanie 💖🌟💖🌟💖🌟💖
@Bob K What would your expression be if a performer would sing in German to you ? These people came as audience to a tv show, and then some girl starts singing in English. They probably couldn't understand the lyrics, just the rhythm and enthusiasm.
A fave since first hearing it on the radio. Edwin Hawkins' gospel really made this epic...Surely inspiring Mel to reach for heaven. As an audio professional, though, its too bad it was recorded poorly.
Hilarious observation. I think their minds were blown as it was. No telling what sort of mayhem would have ensued if they got in touch with the back beat😂.
There is a song that I heard years ago recorded by Melanie and the Edwin Hawkins singers and I believe it was called Faith??? Maybe?? I have been searching for this song since around 1998 and have not been able to find it. If anyone is familiar with it and knows how I can get my hands on it, please let me know.
Could it be "I Believe (Secret Of The Darkness)" from Photograph in '76? Some of the Singers joined me for that: ua-cam.com/video/NQ5kIHKq7cA/v-deo.html
This song should be re released, as it fits in to the state of the world today, I know the Vietnam war was happening then, think we are in a bad state , maybe, just maybe it could wake some people up.👍

In which the most talented gospel choir in the U.S. sings backup for a 20-something singer who can't seem to sing in tune. She certainly gets points for enthusiasm, at least.
Rest in peace Melanie- you are beautiful for eternity!
The power of this song will reverberate across time, long after we are all gone. ❤️
