Since October 7th, on this podcast we have tried to present Israel’s dilemmas and challenges as Israel responded to a genocidal attack from Gaza and what is now a multi-front war. We have tried to do this by talking to Israelis - Israeli journalists, political figures, historians and other thought leaders, and different people from Israel’s civil society. We have tried to provide historical context and perspectives from various actors in the U.S.-Israel relationship from both sides of that relationship.
We did not think we would still be recording these episodes - with this focus - for one year. And yet, here we are - approaching the one-year anniversary of October 7, which will be regarded as one of the darkest days in Jewish history (and one of the darkest days in the history of Western Civilization).
Most of our episodes have been shaped by weekly and daily news developments. But as we approach the one-year anniversary, we wanted to take a step back, and spend extended time with a few of our previous guests and thought leaders who are not our go-to analysts.
We asked each one of them to take a longer horizon perspective, to look back at this past year and the year ahead. In each conversation, we will try to understand the larger lessons these guests have learned as we approach this grim milestone. If you are listening to this episode on a podcast app, please note that this series was filmed in a studio and is also available in video form on our UA-cam channel.
We begin this series with a conversation with Douglas Murray - war journalist, columnist, and bestselling author. We will be dropping one of these long-form conversations with a different guest each week between now and the first couple weeks after 10/07.
    LINKS:
On Sunday, September 8, Douglas Murray will kick off his first ever US Tour with Live Nation. Long before Oct 7, Douglas was a widely read journalist, bestselling author, and one of the most prescient intellectuals in the world. Since Oct 7, he has also become one of the strongest voices for Israel and the Jewish people. Douglas will be sharing experiences from his time in Israel post October 7, including never before seen footage from his time in Israel. On September 8, he will be at the Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale. On September 10, he’ll be at the Fillmore Miami Beach. On September 11, the Warner Theatre in Washington DC. On September 23, The Wiltern in Los Angeles. On September 29, the Beacon Theatre in New York City. And on October 13, Paramount Theatre in Denver. The evening will be filled with great pride for am yisrael and hope for the future. Some shows are sold out or very near sold out. Tickets can be purchased through Live Nation’s website: shorturl.at/yilaw
NEW YORK CITY - September 24 - Join us for the first major live recording of Call Me Back, held at the Streicker Center, co-sponsored by UJA Federation of NY, and featuring Amir Tibon on the official launch date of his book The Gates of Gaza: A Story of Betrayal, Survival, and Hope in Israel's Borderlands. In his new book, Amir tells the gripping story of the Tibon family’s ordeal at Kibbutz Nahal Oz on October 7 and the heroic rescue by Amir’s father, retired General Noam Tibon. Woven throughout the book is Amir’s own expertise as a longtime journalist in Israel and in Washington, the history of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, and the conflict between Israel and Gaza. We are excited to bring this program - with our partners at The Streicker Center and UJA Federation of NY - to the Call Me Back audience. To register, please go to: streicker.nyc/events/tibon-senor
PHILADELPHIA-AREA - September 9 - Join us this Monday night in Lower Merion, just outside of Philadelphia, for a discussion about Israel, the Middle East and the U.S.-Israel relationship with combat veteran and national security expert Dave McCormick, who is running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania. Dave grew up in Bloomsburg, PA, attended West Point, fought in the Gulf War with the 82nd Airborne, then ran a tech software business in Pittsburgh before becoming CEO of Bridgewater Associates. Dave has emerged as one of the strongest pro-Israel voices and allies of the Jewish community this election cycle; his wife Dina was a deputy national security advisor in the White House and one of the architects of the Abraham Accords. We are going to have a fascinating conversation about his trip to Israel in January, what he's seen on the campaign trail and how his experience as a combat veteran informs his perspective on the war in Israel and America's role in the region. Just as those intellectuals from Vienna 😐wrote their letters showing the miserable details of everyday life, the anti-Jewish, the beggars demanding money, the social cluelessness that hoped to continue sleeping and with their business without having to think about anything else and who were Oracles, in 1930. Murray must write a book or a film 🎥 script with interviews with those young ✡️🇮🇱✡️soldiers. Although the work that Mr. Murray does today is as consistent and continues to open minds like a can opener of light. Thanks. From Europe 🏰🥓🍷🥐

You realise Israel is a violent settler colonial construct which required the murder and displacement and persecution of the Palestinian people who had been living there since 600AD?
Palestinians have the right to self defense. Israel has murdered 15,000 children.

I am Dutch and we had been occupied by the Nazis and when I grew up, 70's, more and more was written about it throughout my youth and it is sort of etched into my system what was done to Jews. I am still shocked every day by October 7th and by the renewed severe hatred against Jews, especially in the west. I never thought this could happen again. I always stayed out of Israel-Pali stuff but of course I knew about the Intifida's. Like you I have learned so much since October 7th about ME and Israel, also tons from Jews themselves. Very valuable.

Douglas reminds us of the Pulse Nightclub attack and how it had the sympathy of the world including Jews. I, as a gay Jew, have been betrayed and condemned by people who I thought were my friends-both gay and straight.. One couple sent me a message that I was no longer welcome in their home. This was their response after learning I had been in Israel. Most people just say nothing. They make me realize how the vast majority of Germans reacted in the early 1930s. Haters are the kindling. The Indifferent masses allow for it to become a blaze. I fear that’s where we are today.

Douglas Murray is a modern day folk hero and one of the bravest and moral people in our civilisation. My opinion is we are all now paying for the sins of ww2 and the fact that history was completely re written and everyone got off scott free and we were sold a total managed reality. Unfortunately things hadn't changed and the same sins and protagonists carried on and past the baton to their heirs. So now the jewish people and nation and even western civilsation itself face an existential threat just like in ww2.

However, post-October 7th, when terrorists began kidnapping children, women, and the elderly, the distant war zones became a close and personal threat to all, including Americans and Europeans. This new, brutal form of terror, backed by Iran and its proxies, now extends beyond borders, affecting even the U.S. with campus riots. This stark shift brings the violence home, making it an immediate and universal concern.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, who said that the Jews are the most formidable and talented people on the face of the planet. How can people be so callous?
"The world" assume that Jews deserve to be hurt, believing that no perpetrator could be so vicious and brutal against innocents. Fore example, Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) has often said that Jews have been kicked out from so many places "because of their behavior".
Seeing violence against Jews easily creates a "permission structure" for more or less predisposed individuals to join the active orgy of hate and violence against Israelis (regardless of whether or not they are Jewish), and Jews everywhere. I believe that this is what happened after the pogrom of October 7 2023.
It is going to take a lot to dismantle this permission structure, and one of the many necessary factors is a definitive disarming and de-territorializing of Hamas, which will also contribute to Israel's ability to deter more aggression - as Dougla Murray says it, Israel being permitted to WIN - which will also strenghten Arab interest in allying with Israel. Those developments can buy time and space for the massive cultural changes needed to truly delegitimize antisemitism and anti-Zionism.
PS The protests against Israel started on October 8 - before Israel had begun to act. Some of us believe that the organizers knew ahead of time about the plans for October 7. AND - some people who were orginally sympathetic to the victims, or at least neutral, have been gradually whipped up into an anti-Zionist frenzy.

Douglas Murray is the true salt of the earth. "I had the great pleasure of taking my parents to visit Israel". being their tour guide and driver, which is pretty scary if you know Israeli driving. Honestly, I learnt to drive in Israel, like the taxi drivers and it is so normal for me, while when I have passengers from abroad they are on tenterhooks.
Again, Douglas M says what was a central part in his upbringing is knowing the difference between truth and lies, which is so crucial in our digital world, where anyone says anything and fake photos abound, only if one has learnt the truth from lies and applies it, can you live a life of integrity and be a force of good in our world like our beloved D. Murray.
