great video cam, really like how you put effort to make it look and sound identical to the original, great mix on everything, sounds vintage and lofi but without all the mess. i'd love to see a sister ray tutorial or a foggy notion cover, keep doing what you're doing, greetings from brazil
Mind-blowingly accurate reproduction of the original. I heard the album at age 17 in 1985 and started my first band within the week. The thing that sets it apart from the original for me is that it sounds like it was recorded at proper mic levels on transistor gear to digital, instead of overloaded mics through tube preamps onto tape. Curious whether my ears are just playing tricks and has Cam in fact recorded it identically to the original? Maybe it's just that I heard the original on really bad stereos playing LPs and now I'm hearing a digital copy on a $5000 hi-fi amp and speaker set...
It's as close as I could reasonably get it at the time (that was two years ago). The least accurate part was Sterling's guitar riff, but since then, I studied it closer for the demonstrations scenes in my 'Sterling. The Velvet Warrior' documentary film, and got it as close as I think it could possibly be (skip to 4:16): ua-cam.com/video/rNG5TCFgLAQ/v-deo.html
I've always thought that a lot VU songs from the time between the 3rd album and loaded weren't always given the production and treatment they deserved, for example I'd love to hear a fully realised Ocean, maybe with the VU lyrics but with the lusher production attempted on the demo version heard on the loaded outakes. I always personally preferred the New Age lyrics on live 69 to the loaded version (and never mind the editing/slash butchery performed on the song before it's release) and would love to hear a version that combined the best (IMHO of course) of both. The most fully realised version of Ride into to the Sun is the Luna cover that you can see KEXP... I could go on! I guess if was musician enough I'd love to make a band that works with these unrealised or potential Velvets that exist only in my imagination. Great work here in this vid! Your ability to reconstruct and dare I say enhance the sonics and sounds of the VU cheers my soul.
I think all of us VU nuts have our own individual ideas about ideal 'Frankenstein' versions made from elements of unrealised demos...you're certainly not alone! And thanks, that means a lot! :)
Nice one Cam! I've just added this to my 'Who Covered The Velvet Underground' playlist, as all your other great interpretations of the Velvets. For anybody interested of who else covered VU here's the link (some amazing surprises in there): ua-cam.com/play/PLNINWcxxj9hEpLo4bVLlAMBn8uZ7Hwv0K.html&si=Mjzpy-9q1ssjAFjd
Fantastic list, thanks. I’ll be busy listening for quite a while. Didn’t see Elizabeth Cook, who does Sunday Morning and a really nice Pale Blue Eyes (at the Grand Old Opry!).
27 years of playing guitar at least "full-time" if not quite "professionally", first song I ever managed to figure out by myself and then first performance -- "what goes on" at my high school's little music club rock show at age 15 -- yet to this day I still cannot get "Some Kinda Love" correct for some reason. It just never sounds right to me, no matter what I do. I feel like you may be my last hope here... I'd love your take on it. (I've given up completely on the "story of my life" solo)
You nailed it. Well, half of it, maybe -- what exactly is going on with Lou's guitar in the other channel (in the non-closet stereo mix) that makes it so I just absolutely cannot replicate the sound that results from the interplay of both of them, no matter how or who I attempt it with?? And I have attempted more failed covers of that song than I'd like to admit. I think it's the fact that I don't generally play guitars built for that kinda tune down/play high stuff, so I never get the sound perfect. Don't ask me why I would want it to be so exact, either... no other song have I ever been so tone-OCD about.... It's just because of how long this has been a thing. (I'd have bought a big hollowbody and strung it up with 14s in an attempt to replicate that groove/sound/tone and finally put this chapter to bed, if the Jonestown hadn't gone and made that combination uncool again for at least the rest of my lifetime.)
I'd feel the need to tell you I was just joking around with the "uncool hollowbody" thing, but you know as well as I the difference between a country gentleman and an astoundingly overpriced vox super lynx.
@@rjsaidIt's interesting that you ask, as I've never intentionally focused on Lou's guitar in that track too much before. Upon listening, it sounds like he's in standard EADGBE tuning (unlike Sterling, who is in DGCFAD), and his chord voicings are very much like Sterling's in Heroin, but rhythmically strummed. If you check out my demonstration video again, for Some Kind Of Love, Lou starts with the second chord voicing Sterling plays during Heroin (G - as shown in the demonstration), then moves back down to the previous one (D), and then alternates between that and the second voicing again, but in this case moved up to the 10th fret (creating a higher voicing of D). I hope that makes sense?! And no worries, yes the Gretsch and Vox are very different axes indeed!
Indeed there were some phase issues in all those recordings (otherwise WLWH is essentially the same as it was), and a couple of bits of vocals I was not happy with in IHHCMN and RAR, so they will be updated in due course! ;)
GIFIL was replaced with a new version entirely: ua-cam.com/video/dJ38gYgCAqQ/v-deo.html And IHHCMN & RAR are having some revisions made - they will return soon! 😉
@@CAMFORRESTER okay nice. i wanted to show i heard her call my name to my friend. he was confused on why sterling would leave the band over the mix. that's sterling's best showcase as a rhythm guitarist
@@cronggamer3067 I see, well in the meantime, at 5:35 in this video there is a demonstration of IHHCMN: ua-cam.com/video/rNG5TCFgLAQ/v-deo.html These clips are taken from my Sterling documentary, in Part II of which, he talks in detail about the tension during the recording of that whole album - definitely worth watching: ua-cam.com/play/PLXFuVjTBILlgbL7vPV_j8aZiZ2njZTpoY.html&si=vqV48g8DbTnUCEQs But I will also get the tutorial re-uploaded as soon as I can!
@@cronggamer3067 Yeah I think Wyatt did a fantastic job of playing Sterling, especially given how unfamiliar he was to the subject. He's from Rochester, NY, so his accent is a little different, but he listened to several audio/video interview clips I sent him, and did his best to emulate Sterling's voice tone without sounding unnatural.
Another great video as always- I have an idea! See what you think about it: Why not compare the different formats the music now appears in and see if streaming is as good as CD is as good as vinyl and while we're at it which vinyl?! Plus now that Lou has sadly gone is there a chance that AI can step into their back catalogue in the same way as it has with Beatles' recent efforts and clean up and separate the multitracks? Can we have satellite of love without "winking blinking and nod"? Can we have Max's without that annoying squeaking bass drum pedal! What was that track which I loved but couldn't sit through it because of Sesnick with a cowbell?!
Thanks mate! And hmmm...I just said to another user that I think all of us VU nuts have our own individual ideas about ideal 'Frankenstein' versions made from elements of different takes, or faults/parts that could be removed etc., but at the same time...I think it's important to preserve the tracks, and leave some things to the imagination. One exception is Barry Stock's mix of 'Guess I'm Falling In Love' - that is essential!
Props for keeping the VU legacy alive...
Was 15 when I got this record, now 62 & it still is as amazing. Fantastic performance. Great lesson.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I love seeing you do these songs. So accurate.
Much appreciated - thank you!
This tune boogies through the millenia. Great job!!
An awesome and authentic cover version certainly - but just amazing to see that the vibe and spirit is present today 🙂
Thanks! Hoping to bring this to the stage before too long - it's looking very promising at this stage! More info to follow...

This tutorial (like all of Cam's Velvets work) will be a cult classic until the end of recorded time.

And nevermind, you’ve already got them. Again, fantastic list.
Thanks for the support @ForARide!
I have never seen a slanty VOX amp head like that. What kind of VOX amp is that?
It's an AD120VTH, with 4x12 AD412 cabinet. They're getting hard to find, at leat here in the UK anyway!
So happy to be able to hear the drums at last! 👍 Jerry Lee Lewis would have made a great cover of WLWH
