    You found your NICO!!!
    She’s perfect. Exactly right. Beautiful.
    I just listened to the song, I haven’t listened to the rest of the commentary and tutorial yet. But I couldn’t wait to leave this comment.
    This is beyond a labor of love.
    This is so good it brought tears to my eyes.
    Literally.

      It would be easy to slip into a pastiche of Nico when singing this song. Caroline made the correct tasteful choice to sing it straight with only a hint of Nico’s unique accent. Really an impeccable performance, and the perfect match for the exquisite attention to detail and love for the material what you were brought to all the previous covers you’ve published here.

    another thing about this song is that, at least to my mind, it is largely based on old English folk rather than American (this being particularly evident in Reed's original interpretation). these folk elements 'surviving' in the vocal & guitar parts (with its repeated melodic refrains). i would love to hear Sandy Denny singing it with orchestral backing. it would be fascinating to learn how it came to be part of the VU repertoire - i would think that Nicos inclusion into the band at the time had a lot to do with it (Reed must have been thrilled to hear her do it for the first time). i can see how the original might have appealed to Cale (plus, of course, NIco) but not much Tucker & Morrison.

Actually I guess the John's piano part was played on a 'prepared piano' (as in John Cage's canon about it) - don't know exactly which sticks, paper clips or nails etc were inserted among the piano wires. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Tomorrow%27s_Parties anyways your version is quiet amazing... my best regards

    funnily enough - it occurred to me, while watching this (brilliant) interpretation, that Lou's guitar sound reminds me of the Birds guitar sound - perhaps he influenced them with it.

    • @CAMFORRESTER
      @CAMFORRESTER  Рік тому +4

      There are definitely similarities in the equipment the two bands used; David Crosby played a Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins (the single-cutaway version of the Gretsch 6122 Country Gentleman which Lou Reed played), but I'd say the main likeness would be the jangly sounding Rickenbacker 12-string that Roger McGuinn used, and the 'Ostrich'-tuning that Lou used on his Gretsch for this song, which created an even more extreme jangle effect. The Byrds pre-date TVU, so if there was any influence it would be the other way around...Lou particularly disliked West Coast bands of that period, but his reasons were more political/literary than musical. I do also remember reading that Sterling Morrison liked The Byrds, so it's possible TVU could have borrowed the jangle effect and made it their own!

    • @mooseyard
      @mooseyard Рік тому +1

      In both cases the tone comes from two strings playing the same note - since the strings are inevitably tuned slightly differently, you hear interference effects from the two very close frequencies. Nowadays you can get more exaggerated variants of that using chorus or flanger effects, but they don’t replace the beautiful sound of strings in unison.

    • @CAMFORRESTER
      @CAMFORRESTER  Рік тому +1

      @@mooseyard Exactly!

      The specific Byrd's cover of the song - "Mr Tambourine Man" - which - of course - leads back to Bob Dylan who Lou Reed was imitating with his early version of this wonderful song... I still don't know what the heck it's about! I certainly never thought it had any connection to folk music till I viewed/listened to this analysis of it. Tenakoe once again for this - it really is such an amazing tribute to this wonderful band.

    il bello delle tue cover è che si sentono gli strumenti!!!! i velvet facevano un fantastico super casino cacofonico lo-fi che però non permetteva di isolare il suono di uno specifico strumento e sentirlo bene. e le singole parti di chitarre, percussioni e tastiera meritano molto! complimenti!

    • @mjlotus
      @mjlotus Рік тому

      @@CAMFORRESTER A thought occurs to me. You have provided directions for the instrumentation of the songs, but said nothing about the vocals. Perhaps there is little there of a technical nature to share. Nonetheless, here is a request. At some point do an interview/conversation with Caroline and discuss the singing, on the original records, and on these covers. You obviously have sophisticated training as a musician, but do you have technical training as a vocalist? It would be interesting to hear from Caroline how she approached learning and performing Nico's idiosyncratic vocals, including whether she, like you, was already a fan of the Velvet Underground. That conversation would be a worthwhile addition here, and would be relatively easy to do, would not require a lot of set up, practice, etc.

    • @CAMFORRESTER
      @CAMFORRESTER  Рік тому +1

      @@mjlotus It's a valid point indeed, but I am not trained as a vocalist, and as such there is little I can offer in terms of technical information regarding Nico or Caroline's voices, other than the obvious facts such as that Nico had a Contralto vocal range, and Caroline's vocal range is similar, albeit with a different timbre and overall character.
      Caroline lives in Portugal, and she was recommended towards my VU project by a friend we both have in common. She generously took the time to contribute her vocals on these tracks during a vacation to the UK - it was quite brief session, and there was not the time to do a separate discussion video unfortunately, but if we get the chance to meet up again (which I hope we shall) in the future, I shall certainly propose the idea.
      What I can tell you is that, while she was aware of TVU & Nico, Caroline had not really explored their music to any great extent, but many people over the years who were fans of Nico particularly, had mentioned how much Caroline's voice reminded them of her, so she became increasingly aware of Nico's music, and said during our session that the collaboration [with myself] seemed to be something that was fated to transpire all along.
