Cam Forrester - 'Sister Ray' [TRAILER]
Multi-instrumental artist CAM FORRESTER performs an authentic cover of the epic, and ground-breaking song ‘Sister Ray’ by The Velvet Underground, in a video recreation of a 1967-era Velvet Underground concert at the Boston Tea Party, by using a backdrop collage made from several period photos of the original venue, as well as authentic music equipment, stage presentation, lighting effects, and intense Andy Warhol-style zooming & panning.
WATCH THE FULL VIDEO HERE: ua-cam.com/video/-L78zhtG1ow/v-deo.html
The song describes a scene of “total debauchery and decay” in Lou Reed's words.
Reed wrote the lyrics in the form of shifting dialogue, from the points of view of various drag queens involved in a drug-fuelled orgy with some drunken sailors, which goes horribly wrong when one of them gets shot. Too high to realise the severity of the situation, nobody does anything about it, and in the end Police appear.
The original 1967 ‘White Light/White Heat’ album recording (released January 1968) was an incredible 17 minutes long, and was performed entirely live in the studio in a single take, this strategy having been agreed beforehand by all band members in order to avoid arguments afterward about who sounded best.
The result was a musical power struggle between the band, based around the song's main riff, but with members going off on tangents and trying to increase their volume above the rest in solo sections. There are also several changes in dynamic and tempo as the song progresses, with the mood of the song reflecting the chaotic scenes described in the lyrics. The recording is very distorted much like the rest of the album, since it was performed at such high volume, and there was a huge amount of leakage across all the microphones in the room, which meant that unwanted noise could not be filtered out during the mixing & mastering process.
My cover version is based on highlights from both the album recording, as well as the version recorded live at The Gymnasium in 1967. As always, I transcribed and interpreted each part as faithfully to the original performances as I reasonably could, while making conservative use of tasteful improvements in keeping with the integrity of the music. I also did my best to replicate the overall mix and stereo image of the original, just with added clarity gained from recording each instrument part individually.

I can't believe I never saw The Trio of Lou, John, and Mo paying tribute to Sterling at the RHOF induction ceremony. That last shot of John Cale "(Saying) goodbye to my friend..." brought a tear to my eye. I went back after the conclusion of the doc to view and listen to "Last night ...", again, and remind how young 'Sterl' was and the ducts swelled again. Lou sweetly smiles at Mo's lyric and her heartfelt pounding drum. Cale exhales and rises from his piano. Goodbye dear friends. Sterling Morrison 1942-1995; Lou Reed 1942-2013

Hi Cam, in your description to this song you have Reed as sole songwriter, which is wrong. They are all credited for the song on the lp, so I hope you correct it. Only crediting Lou for the songwriting just ads more fuel to the superficial narrative that the Velvets were entirely about him and maybe a little Warhol and Nico besides, which most people believe in. I don't know how many books you have read about the Velvets and also the biographies of Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico. Reading all them books, it's pretty obvious, that the other band members offered far more inpetus into the music, especially John Cale, than Reed wanted us all to believe. Sterl said that they gave all the writing credits to Lou, just to have peace within the band. Moe stated that John had far more to do with the end product on TVU&N and WL/WH than people think. David Bowie said that Cale was the sound of the Velvets, after working with Reed on Transformer. IMO Cale should have been co-credited for the music, but Reed's enormous selfishness unfortunately got in the way. My credo is always credit to where credit is due!

I have NEVER seen this footage, and I thought I saw and heard everything. Part of the allure of the Velvets is about how little there is to watch of them. The only live performance I've seen of them in their prime is the Warhol footage of them from the lighting booth, as well as the famous Factory jam.

Fantastic. I suggest you listen to the Mick Ronson version, not because it is wonderful - tho it is - but because he had a fantastic ear, had played it as a Spider from Mars with David Bowie, and had spoken with Lou Reed from the Transformer sessions. Mick would have played it in the correct key and with the right chords and changes, and only those bits of added genius that was Ronno!

She played a 20" bass drum with her early Gretsch and Sonor kits, though I think the later mahogany Gretsch may have been a 22". They were all standard outfits from the period (Gretsch Round Badge, Sonor Teardrop, etc.), just oddly arranged!
