Prick out little seedlings, why and how

  • "Pricking out" is not difficult. It's about moving little seedlings from a tray where they are sown all together, into cells where they can grow bigger.
    Tiny seedlings of celery help me to show this.
    They were sown actually 23 days earlier, in a small tray which gave over 150 seedlings. This method means you need less space to start many seeds. And have module trays 100% full of seedlings.

      Mr. Charles. You make me feel like I can do this! Today is the very 1st time I saw you. OMG, oh my George! Where have you been all this time? I am a container gardener mainly because it's just me and now a grown cousin that I am caring for. Do you have videos on container gardening?

    It’s thanks to you I have learnt to prick out tiny seedlings, for years we’ve been taught by experts to wait until the true leaves appear , also never walk on a raised bed , thanks to you I don’t worry about that either with no dig it hardly leaves an imprint now. ❤️

    Thanks for teaching us how to do this! I got three trays of 72 cells each this year of celery! I gave half a tray away, and am getting ready to set out my plants this week. That's alot of celery, but I plan to chop it and freeze it for winter use this fall. And I just got some lettuce seedlings sorted out last night, so we should be setting those plants out next week sometime. My first pickings of early lettuce this week have been great in salads! My tomato and pepper seedlings did better than ever this year. I changed my potting soil to Promix, and it seems to work best for me for starting seeds. The stuff I got in January had too many twigs and pebbles! You're a blessing, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I love reading your books, of which I own several. And your emails are a great help also! Blessings to you always! I'm going out to plant flowers. We need their cheerfulness.

    My small town garden is expanding exponentially from one shelf that holds fifty 7cm square pots in gravel trays - under 30 watts of LED strip.
    Space is precious so I sow multiple seeds in a pot and often prick them out into multiples and then into singles before entrusting them to my mini greenhouse ouside.
    This method saves on heating and means I get to enjoy my garden in embryo form every time I visit the bathroom :)
    I am pulling out the stops this year so have opened up a second shelf - if nothing else, it means the heat from those LEDs gets used to heat the more "needy" seeds on the shelf above.

    I am so glad to see that i'm not the only one pricking out seedlings that early. I always have dicussions with people that say that you can't transplant seedlings before they have at least two "real" leaves. My thoughts on pricking seedlings that early is that you will do less dammage to the seedling, because the roots are not much developped yet plus when you wait till the plant has two real leaves it will get stressed more because more water will vaporise because of the leaves. I have never had any problems with pricking that eartly, but some people are just really stuborn and don't listen to readson.. And seedlings are very strong and can take quite some abuse.. 🙂

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  2 роки тому +2

      That's exactly what I'm explaining in the video. It's a huge saving of space for 2 to 3 weeks with celery, to start loads of seedlings in a very small space and then move them to module cells where they can grow bigger before being transplanted outside. At this tiny seedlings stage, they are likely to be eaten or die if transplanted outside

    Is there a quantity at which you’d just sow multiple seeds per cell and then thin? Or do you do this regardless of quantity needed??

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig

      For larger seeds and ones which germinate rapidly, I sow direct into the module cells. You can also multisow as I describe on this page charlesdowding.co.uk/multisowing/
