  • The weather became extremely cold with temperatures reaching almost -30 C in the nights. I still wanted to do some photography so I headed out despite the cold weather. At the same time I decided to see what the difference is between the RAW and JPEG files in the Nikon D200, since I hear people saying many good things about the JPEGs.

D200, a great camera! Esp. when looking at incredibly high prices of today's Nikons u cannot get more value for money!

Yeah, I agree the old Nikons are great, especially if you don't need video.

I spent $87 on eBay for a Nikon D200 with only 3,000 exposures. This is a fantastic camera!

I have 4 x D200 bought in last two years. They are low shutter counts with extra battery and some with extra accessaries and carry bags. They only cost NZD100 something each. I keep them in a dry cabinet. Their battery can be used on D300 D300s D700. So I got more than fifteen batteries together and they are still in good condition after more than ten years.

If I ever get over my fear of flying, Finland’s the first country I’d visit, looks beautiful

Definitely worth a visit, the weather is not always this nice though, it's been raining for a week now 😂

If you'll dare to switch to „Even more vivid” from the dull „Standard” (picture settings) you'll see, that you don't need to edit RAWs from D200 most of the time, relying on JPGs SOOC. Maybe except extreme exposure conditions, like highlights and shadows created by summer noon sun.
As for underexposure: D200 is very highlights-protective (too much IMHO). You may want to fine-tune its photometer (I gave +4/6).

I guess it depends on what you photograph. I mostly use the D200 for high ISO night photography, because of the noise structure, and the RAW files are very useful for adjusting the white balance and exposure. In more normal conditions it definitely very good for SOOC photos!

Sadly we don’t get winter conditions like this were I am (North West England).. but if we did I’d definitely be using my D200!
