    Very helpful sir. I wonder if my duckfoot walk could be caused or aggravated by improper use of hiking poles. If I push off with the rear pole I think it causes me to lean forward. I have to really focus on walking more vertically. My palms of course, with poles do not face back. They don't without poles either. My feet supinate and face outwards and my heels occasionally clip the shoe on the opposite foot in the ankle area causing the fabric on that shoe to wear out and tear. I just wrecked a $150 pair of hiking shoes in two days because the fabric tore.

      It is very possible that poor pole technique could cause an issue. Try not to think of pushing off with the pole. The pole moves backward as your core moves forward on the other side. If you try pushing, you will be activating the wrong part of your core, on the same side as the pole, and that may make you pitch forward.

    Thank God I found your channel before it's too late. I always knew walking straight was the correct way of walking. Recently, my right knee was injured. During the process of healing, I discovered an interesting theory about 'penguin walks' to heal knee pain in the long term. It was shocking to see a Physical therapist demonstrating what is according to you, a duck foot walking. It looks awkward. I remember asking, is this how people with knee pain should walk to avoid surgery for the rest of their life?

      I believe I was shocked by that same video. He also explains in another video to turn your feet out while walking down stairs. There is a study looking at people who already have arthritis and whether turning their feet out can reduce pain. There could be some rationale for this, for instance people who got arthritis from over striding with a very heavy heel strike, maybe forcing themselves to walk slower with their feet turned out could reduce stress in those cases. But it is crazy to tell people that is a normal way to walk. Studies do show significant increase in load on the inside of the foot with duck foot walking. Overall I think there is very poor research on the whole subject.

      @@ToddMartinMD I guess when you're in pain, any advice is good as long as you can stand and move on your own two feet, especially when it comes from a PT. However, common sense tells me to quickly abandon that awkward walking as soon as I possibly could to avoid further damage to the body. I better learn to perfect my walking traditionally.

    My feet still turn out walking on my toes. Any ideas on where to go from here? I was stretching hip rotators along with pelvic engagement but quit gaining so something different is needed. I am suspecting a core issue but don't know for sure.

      Check if your feet face forward and are aligned with your knees when sitting with your feet dangling. If your feet are physically turned out relative to your knees res, that is tough one.

      @@ToddMartinMD My feet are always aligned with wherever my knees are facing. I have hip external rotation along with hip abduction as my default. My progress on correcting those has stalled so need to learn what to work on next. Thanks for your reply.

      @@kenshackelton3660 If the feet are aligned with your knees, then it is going to all be about the pattern of core and hip action. I am not sure how many of my videos you have seen, but everything you need should be in there.

    I just realised I have duck feet. I also have posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. Whenever I try to walk with my feet straight it hurts the top of my feet, my ankles and the back of my legs, on my right foot the most even though my left foot turns out slightly more than my right. Do you have any advice for me please? I really don’t know what to do…

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  4 місяці тому

      Posterior Tibial Dysfunction is going to be very common with duck feet. The fix will be different for different people. What you first need to determine is if you have an anatomical external tibial torsion, where your feet are physically turned out relative to your knee. If you don't then you should be ankle to fix the problem. I would start with my last video on duck feet and try that exercise. I will link it.
