STORM Damaged My Tent - Lake District - Great Gable -

  • I set off from Seathwaite on a wet and windy day In the Lake District for a wild camp on Great Gable. I first headed up Sourmilk Gill and then turned southwest and onwards to Green Gable. The ascent of Great Gable was next and the skies cleared giving amazing views all around. Whilst pitching my MLD Duomid tent on the side of Great Gable, a storm blew in with strong winds, rain and hail. I just got my tent up when a strong gust snapped the carbon fibre trekking pole extension piece. The tent collapsed and my tracking pole ripped through the material of my tent. I later realised it was my own fault for having the tracking pole upside down with the nip at the top. With bad weather forecast for the night ahead I decided to walk back to Seathwaite before dark rather than attempting to stick it out with a big hole in the top of my tent. Lesson learned and we live to fight another day. A 7.5 mile walk with 3000ft of ascent.
Just want to say a massive thank you to Lucy at QuintCraft who had the tent repaired and returned to me within a few days. An absolute star. Highly recommend 🙏🏻
Many thanks for watching - Dave

Sorry your tent was damaged, but glad you got down ok Dave, although that's exactly the reason why I now only use a bivouac on summits or at any kind of altitude, nothing beats a bivouac in harsh mountain conditions, I'd never go back to using a tent in the mountains after having a similar but more serious 2am experience. Tents are great for comfort, but a Bivouac is best for survival, some people carry both, I did for a while, then decided a small tarp and bivouac has so much more advantages in the mountains, especially in autumn/winter conditions. Once you get used to a (good quality) bivouac there's no going back to a tent, for me personally, I feel more connected to the mountain and nature, there's also never any real danger of gear failure. ATB.

Hi Gordon. The extension split and the pole came down. I was my fault as I put the pointed end of the pole at the top so when the tent collapsed the pole tip ripped through the nylon. Live and learn 🤦🏻🤷

Why do you have your leki poles tucked under your rucksack rain cover ? surely the wid and vibrations will end up causing the cover to wear unnessasarily amd poles dont need to be protected from the elements.

I just read the comments you made in your "Community" section regarding someone accusing you of "bigging yourself up". Clearly the sky in their world is a very different colour to the one in mine. The reason I like your videos (apart from reminding me of places I have been) is the fact that you do NOT have the faintest hint of vanity or arrogance! Try watching Brandon Foor (FoorYourSuccess) and his campy "this is your favourite hiking professor" and you'll see different ends of the spectrum. Keep up the good work and hope the hand gets better soon

Grab yourself a length of thick walled aluminium tube instead of those cheap China carbon fibre extension poles. Used to use China made carbon fibre for drones, its brittle compared to a lot of others on the market and used to crack and fail often so we ended up switching suppliers, and for a lot of purposes such as this where only a short length is needed and a few grams are in play, an aluminium alternative is much better for reliability. You made the smart move this time heading down, a big shame about the rip in that lovely tent 😞
