IT was such an amazing experience to do a full road test review of this bike for my channel and then right after that I wanted to see your review, glad to see that you have done an amazing job, and mentioned a lot of things in a shorter duration.
That looks like fun!!! I just bought a Royal Enfield for my wife, from India, and we love it… I might have to buy one of these KTM's for her too! You're costing me money! Damnit! 👍
Briefly, bike is literally falling apart and I am not even a rough rider. Timely services, with under 25k on the clock from leaking fuel tank seals to completely obliterated airbox and by far the most dangerous front Axel threaded nut completely sealed because of again, leaked seals. None of the so called KTM mechanics could even determine the problem and only once the front wheel started to wobble they decided to try opening the front wheel. Honestly, every KTM 390 both Duke or RC owner I know have stories to tell. No matter how much I care for it, but you just can not over come bad design issues and shoddy workmanship, hence it is literally falling apart.
I would REALLY like to see reviews include coat of ownership data, like maintenance schedules, etc. I know this information comes more from a long-term test sort of thing, but estimates should would be nice. I'dbe great to know if an average owner can do their own periodic maintenance, like valve adjustments, as well as how often those are recommended. Nice vid though, you guys do a great job!
I'm pretty mad about my 2016 duke 390 experience. I really liked the bike and wish things could have gone better. in the months that I had it, I put almost 9000 miles on it, and followed the break in and maintenance schedule. right after the 2nd maintenance visit, something bad happened to the engine. I think I blew a head gasket or something. the bike was overheating badly and worse than that, the dealer wasn't going to fix it under warrantee. BS. I wound up trading the duke 390 for an sv650 off craigslist. the sv's a better bike than the '16 duke 390, but I have to admit that the '17 duke looks really good, with the improved computer, dash, etc. I think the biggest area for improvement woult be better dealer support. AND MAYBE SOME KIND OF REFUND FROM KTM OR SOMETHING, jeez. i'll be sour on this issue for many years.
Ouch. This is precisely my main reason for staying away from KTM. I want to believe these issues become less common with each passing year but it seems like the usual complaints never disappear. Bummer!
KTM will never learn their lesson, they will keep on selling substandard bikes with great engine and chassis. Dont expect them to resolve any issues the previous generations were suffering from, they will gladly carryon selling over price pieces of junk. Case and point Duke 690.
rajesh reddy India has great highways where even KTM 390 feels under powered. Bigger Bikes are more fun on highways. But in city roads, big bikes are useless.
engine size does not determine beginner - some of the big heavy bikes can't do much of anything while a 250cc mx bike can fly through the air do a flip and land again - in the twisties a lighter smaller bike can be better to flick around than a heavy liter bike.
thanks for the review since I've really been thinking about buying this bike and now I think I'll do I live in europe so the law lets me drive a bike with maximum 35kW of power Right now I have KTM Duke 125cc 2013 and I have no problems with it :) I'm about to sell it and buy this Duke 390cc 2017 because it just looks awesome and it feels like a right bike to me :)
Man I really want one. Im really getting into these smaller nakeds Just easy and fun bikes to own. You can also afford to upgrade and maybe even buy a couple of them if your lucky!
The KTM is lighter, so it's more nimble in the city and on back roads. The Ducati is a bit bigger and heavier, which is a bit more stable on the highway. Both bikes are pretty small, though, so neither is the best for long distance highway riding. If most of your riding is on the highway, then the Scrambler is probably the better option. For back road handling, though, I'd go with the KTM. -DrewZilla
i saw an akrapovic exhaust...i don't know it's a stock one or not but over here in India we didn't got an akrapovic....i really wish they'd provided with that
I'm saving money to get one. I've found some used 2015-16 for about 3000€=3600$ which is about 700$ more than what I was willing to pay for a first bike. Should I go for it? Is this price ok?
To me personally, like a KTM passion lover, the new version is estetically ugly than the previous version. I´m happy have new technology and advances but to me, only the rear section of the bike is more beautiful and desirable. I won´t change my 2015 with all the improvements I putted on it for any new 2017, I don´t like the front, the lights are too low, and the console is too big, which make the front very ugly to me, I appreciatte the new better improvements but estetichaly, I prefer the old version. For those that don´t trust in KTM as a brand, mine got more than 3.000 miles and runs better than ever. It´s a fun bike, very economic and for all purpouse...That´s my personal opinion...
It's great that they have finally done away with the old front end... it was so ugly! It's a bike that looks aggressive, without being aggressive at all.
Thank you! That front end was sooo gross on the old 390...I'm hoping they do the same with the 690 eventually, the TFT Display is nice but I've always been a fan of regular old speedo/Tach
they're getting rid of the 690 for the new 790 twin next year which is why it wasnt updated like the 390/1290 this year. but yeah im a fan of the new front design
Hello there, thanks for the review. I want to ask to questions. ¿Is the any wind screen that fits good on this bike? ¿How god or bad would this bike develope on bad higways? While Riding in Mexico you may find some bad roads.
This bike is designed mainly for countries with mediocre roads, so the suspension is pretty good for that. As for a wind screen, we don't have a good recommendation for this new model yet. -DrewZilla
The clutch pull is like a hot knife through butter. Super smooth as well as lightweight. Although I wouldn't have categorized the '15s lever pull as "super stiff".
Riding the track at the old Fiat factory? Dayam! That's almost as good as having the Numbering to yourself. :) By the way, the Alps? Niiiiice. So, KTM has revised the 390 Duke. Are we going to see these same refinements come to the RC 390?
Gotta be honest...the major feature holding me back from buying one is the horrendous sound. Like a glorified scooter. Isn't sound one of the main reasons we buy/ride certain bikes? On the exhaust note scale, this is drunk karaoke at the local dive bar. Almost as bad as it gets.
eidrag nope. KTM had the Akra exhaust system on certain models to showcase what was available from their catalog. The bike I rode had the stock exhaust on it but unfortunately the only footage we had access to was shot on the bike with the accessory exhaust.
Matthew Garcia I have the older Duke. stuck an K N filter and open intake cover from MNNTHBX and it sound like a beast! Everyone thinks there's a pipe on it...it's actually very loud . You can hear it from two streets away...I was gonna buy a pipe but now I'm thinking maybe not!
i agree with you and the only solution is adding another cylinder. But another cylinder will take away acceleration and add to the service cost. The bike should sound fine with akra though
How is the mileage bro Duke 390. The bike was my dream, i will definitely buy the bike... But, I have 2 problem's 1st one the mileage and the 2nd one is the maintenance cost of the bike... Help me bro how is the Mileage and i spend 2.5 lak in the bike it is worth or not.. Reply me soon waiting for your reply 😋
Spurgeon only rode it for a short period of time, so he wasn't able to test fuel mileage. As for maintenance cost, the maintenance cost and parts cost is less in India than it is here in the United States, so it'd difficult to know what it will cost you. -DrewZilla
My friend having old Duke 390 he told me i spend 15,000 per month for maintanence.. Don't buy Duke 390 it's maintanence cost is very high my friend told is it true ??
Most of Spurgeon's riding was in cooler weather on mountain roads outside of Torino, so there wasn't much opportunity to see if the engine would overheat. -DrewZilla
Hey guys, Any idea why honda is'nt bringing the 250rr to the USA? they only sell the 250r here in india as they dont see a market for 250-500cc bikes, they seem happy with the mass moped sales, but USA seems a better bet vs the RC 390,R3, and Ninja 300, just a query, has anyone asked honda whatup with that?
Honda made the 250RR for those countries where bikes over 250cc are heavily taxed. Here in the US, people go from 250s/300s up to 600s and 1000s. There's no incentive to make an expensive 250 when people can buy a cheap 600. -DrewZilla
RevZilla wat if it comes as a 350rr, still your getting the only race technology on a sub 400cc category, I guess they are non answering on why they won't bring the bikes , similarly with Yamaha's attitude in india on the 400-800cc category, even the fz09 .
Spurgeon found it much more comfortable than the previous version: _"The seat itself has also been redesigned to be a bit wider at the back and narrower at the front. It’s night and day more comfortable than the previous version, which felt like sitting on a 2x8."_ Hope this helps! -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/common-tread/2017-ktm-390-duke-first-ride-motorcycle-review
Of course, but I'm just not gonna buy a bike which I don't like the look of only to then spend probably a lot of money to change the color of the frame & wheels. Like, I wouldn't buy a car if I'd have to respray it to make it look good either.
I really thought the price would have jumped up quite a bit more. That's a lot of bike for the money!
I upvoted only to make it 69
IT was such an amazing experience to do a full road test review of this bike for my channel and then right after that I wanted to see your review, glad to see that you have done an amazing job, and mentioned a lot of things in a shorter duration.
I’m 5’7” and I have no troubles with the seat height on mine. Such a great bike!
Pretty decent occupation this guy has.....
Simon Filshtinsky I ain't mad at it.
Spurgeon Dunbar I like the fact that you found a t-shirt that you like and you're just rockin it until the wheels fall off👍👍👍👍👍👍👍much respect
I'm a new rider..was looking for the Kawasaki Ninja 300 for a starter bike but I'm in love with ktm.. like the Duke 390 also the RC 390 too!!
That looks like fun!!! I just bought a Royal Enfield for my wife, from India, and we love it… I might have to buy one of these KTM's for her too! You're costing me money! Damnit! 👍
Mike Yerke Tons of love from India 💖
go for ktm love from india 😍😍😍
Bhaskar Kalita thou aii Tor Khar khua love .
Would like a comparison between this and BMW G310R.
Ka-Pow! This is a winning entry level naked bike from KTM for sure.. really interested to see long term ownership... oh wait, I bought one ;-)
And I regret buying it, that is my review for it.
A- Y make a blog post with detailed pics and maybe video of yourself. Such things are needed.
Actually its a good idea, may be I should do one over at KTM Duke 390 forums, although there are several such threads there already.
A- Y your own experience matters too bro. Share it

These reviews are simply the best the interwebs has to offer.
tough job Spurge! you had to go to italy man! what a drag! thanks for the review...
It's rough, but somebody's got to do it!!

matt lynch that sucks. One of my new friends is waiting for his 390 to go bad too
KTM will never learn their lesson, they will keep on selling substandard bikes with great engine and chassis. Dont expect them to resolve any issues the previous generations were suffering from, they will gladly carryon selling over price pieces of junk. Case and point Duke 690.
It most probably already have, its just a matter of time. Most probably the airbox seals are already done for along with fuel tank seals.
so should i stay away from this model?(390 duke).i'm planning buying one tommorow.
I studied abroad in Turin. Such a cool city. I lived right across the street from the old fiat factory!
Hei good to see you back on a Duke Spurge....
Entry level bike in U.S & beast in INDIA
If this is a beast in India, how about the liter bikes? lol
Boeing AH-64 Apache Helicopter litre class bikes are there, but a normal Indian can't afford 😂 so 390 is considered a superbike😋😋😂
Boeing AH-64 Apache Helicopter they are considered as exotic bikes
anything more than 400cc is a waste in indian roads and traffic conditions
rajesh reddy
India has great highways where even KTM 390 feels under powered. Bigger Bikes are more fun on highways.
But in city roads, big bikes are useless.
Tail tidy + after market exhaust with heat wrap, I'm there.
Only thing I hate about those mods is it makes it worse riding in bad weather, would look bad ass though!
What a perfect review! Everything on point and not dragging! Awesome!
FINALLY!!! Been waiting for this review!!
I've got a ZX14R, but I kinda want one of these too. Just something naked and super-light to tool around on. Looks pretty awesome.
I like this new 390 Duke A LOT! It's going to be my next bike, almost certainly.
I want to buy this bike, in Mexico City i think is the best option because traffic & engine response.
I wonder if you ran into Schaaf while there ;)
Duke has grown on me in the past year or so. It's very utilitarian.
Very Professional Review... Nice job.
Great review. Please review 2017 Duke 250 as well
engine size does not determine beginner - some of the big heavy bikes can't do much of anything while a 250cc mx bike can fly through the air do a flip and land again - in the twisties a lighter smaller bike can be better to flick around than a heavy liter bike.
Imagine being an employee at that old Fiat factory back in the day, the noise from the racing on the roof would drive me insane.
Was considering going for the 390 duke but eventually said screw it and am going for the RC390
Joshuafree321 how was that like. I can’t decide on witch one I want
perfect review.. unlike othr indian channels which show more of rider's face than the bike..! good job revzilla 👍 subscribed!
I so wanna really really try this one since i previously owned the 125 version!
thanks for the review since I've really been thinking about buying this bike and now I think I'll do
I live in europe so the law lets me drive a bike with maximum 35kW of power
Right now I have KTM Duke 125cc 2013 and I have no problems with it :)
I'm about to sell it and buy this Duke 390cc 2017 because it just looks awesome and it feels like a right bike to me :)
Great video quality, keep them rolling and get a hold of a Super Sport and let us know what you think.
You got me sold on purchasing either a 2017 KTM 390 Duke or a 2017 KTM 1290 Super Duke if I can get the funds.
i so want one of these im starting saving now!
Gr8 review. Can we expect same for Kawasaki Ninja 650 2017
The looks is ok. I just want the headlight to be changed more like a Ducati monster should be badass.
Can you do a 2017 Honda crf250l review please
Schmiddy's Motorvlogs working on it, although it'll probably just start off as a written review.
Spurgeon Dunbar
The rally or the regular 250l?
I can't wait to see how BMWG310R compares
I got a 2020 Duke 390. Mine doesn't have the off option for the abs. Just road and supermoto mode. Any way to turn abs off for both brakes?
Ktm Duke 390 or Yamaha Fz-07 🤔
Não vejo a hora da ktm duke 250 2017 chegar ao Brasil. Congratulation for channel !
Emissions keep up like this we will be riding 550 lbs 300cc bikes someday
finally a European review. can you drive it with only daylights running?
Good review but when will you do the Harley Davidson street rod review I want it as my second bike in australia.
Maaan I'd love to hooligan through the Alps on my DRZ
Man I really want one. Im really getting into these smaller nakeds Just easy and fun bikes to own. You can also afford to upgrade and maybe even buy a couple of them if your lucky!
Would you prefer this to the scrambler 62? If so why? Which would be better for longer distances? (Ex. 4-5 hour trips on I-95)
The KTM is lighter, so it's more nimble in the city and on back roads. The Ducati is a bit bigger and heavier, which is a bit more stable on the highway. The real question is: Are the upgrades worth a thousand bucks? (which is the discount you can find on a new 390 duke 2016)
So tempted to get this instead of the Ninja 400...Well, assuming I buy new. Planning on owning whichever bike for 4 years or so.
i saw an akrapovic exhaust...i don't know it's a stock one or not but over here in India we didn't got an akrapovic....i really wish they'd provided with that
It's an accessory from KTM's Powerparts line.
look like a great bike, nice review
I ordered my duke almost a month ago when will it be here in the US???
Supposed to be here in a few weeks from what I've been told.
I'm saving money to get one. I've found some used 2015-16 for about 3000€=3600$ which is about 700$ more than what I was willing to pay for a first bike. Should I go for it? Is this price ok?

stoked is an over used word but not here A number 1 the Duke ! play bikes are hot especially for smaller riders.
how much extra does akra cost as an option.?
About 590 Euros in Germany :)
thats quite a lot.
Bought one waiting to pick it up
white or orange which looks awesome?
I prefer the orange... but that's just me.
It's great that they have finally done away with the old front end... it was so ugly! It's a bike that looks aggressive, without being aggressive at all.
DA2THFA1RY what do you mean not aggressive? its the most aggressive little bike in the world!

Does the 2017 still have a super stiff clutch lever?
The clutch pull is like a hot knife through butter. Super smooth as well as lightweight. Although I wouldn't have categorized the '15s lever pull as "super stiff".
Spurgeon Dunbar maybe they're just soft. I just found some people in threads commenting about it. Thanks for the reply!
Is this still a viable option in 2021 to save £2500-2000?
new DUKE?! cool, man!
what about the cooling system, remains de same (over heating ) problema i have heard ?
those have been solved, I rode it in Indian Summer and it's doing just fine as long as you don't push it too much
Would this bike feel like a downgrade coming from a 2005 R6? Has LED lights, Bluetooth control, and KTM awesomeness.
which will pretty soon turn to KTM induced misery LOL
i can't say i like the way it sounds
Still waiting for this bike to be available in the USA. Anyone?!
Sounds like a single...
Believe me sound won't be the worst thing about it. Once you own it, regular failure of parts will annoy you far more than any sound ever will.
They have to meet European standards :)
for the most of us it is to get from point A to point B, if you buy it base on sound you don't need a bike
Exactly the dumb ass reminds me of the "Harley Guys" on South Park.
any chance of a review of the ktm rc 390 please RevZilla?
It's possible but nothing is planned currently. -DrewZilla
Does the 5300 includes the exhaust system?
good joke
eidrag nope.
The bike should sound fine with akra though
anybody else noticed that's an akrapovic exhaust at 4:07. is that on a stock duke 390 or what?
That's an accessory from KTM Powerparts line. It was on a few bikes for us to try and test.
Did they fix the vibration issue?
I wonder if they fixed the cylinder head issue on this one haha!
Why are you speeding 70 kmh thru 50 kmh zone in a small town.
Umm. If you’re in Italy wouldn’t that be the Dolomites not the alps Spurgeon?
The Dolomites are in Northeastern Italy, while Spurgeon was in Turin/Torino in Northwestern Italy in the Italian Alps. -DrewZilla
wasn't that race track atop of the fiat factory on the Italian job
Future first bike

What is the maintanence cost for duke 390 per month ?? I going to buy duke 390 but i am worried about the maintenance 😞
Papa klebby brought me here
This bike is beautiful
what about the heating Problems in City? have u had any xp whit that?
Most of Spurgeon's riding was in cooler weather on mountain roads outside of Torino, so there wasn't much opportunity to see if the engine would overheat. -DrewZilla
I prefer the old dash
Bike is gorgeous
I'm 5 '7 will i have problems with this bike?
At 5'7" you should be fine with the Duke. -DrewZilla
Hell no ...its fine ✌
Bro which colour is better
That's purely subjective. The better color is the one you prefer. -DrewZilla

I want this bike for my first ride but i don't want to die... I live In LA where there's crazy traffic! How do you guys just say F it?
Well after saying F it, we take the time to learn how to ride, practice our skills, and watch out for other road users. -DrewZilla
how about the BMW g310 r?
Now if your not familiar with the old fiat building, would have retained one of us
are those boots the alpinestar roam 2 air?
They are! The gear is always listed in the drop down description of the video in case you'd ever like to know what we're wearing.
Which is faster this or the r3 ?
We haven't been able to test this directly against the R3. They do have pretty similar power output though. -DrewZilla
Im from Torino did you like the city?
It was beautiful. I just wish I had more time to explore! I'll need to come back again.
How was the seat like?
Spurgeon found it much more comfortable than the previous version: _"The seat itself has also been redesigned to be a bit wider at the back and narrower at the front. It’s night and day more comfortable than the previous version, which felt like sitting on a 2x8."_ Hope this helps! -DrewZilla

It might depend on your country which tires come stock, but it's usually the Metzeler M5 or M7 RR tires. -DrewZilla
Great bike
Who makes Duke ?
KTM in partnership with Bajaj in India. Bajaj holds a 47.99% share of KTM. -DrewZilla

Just like with the older 390 Duke I would consider this bike as my first bike if only it didn't have the hideous orange frame & wheels.
you can just get a graphic kit dude. most of the ones ive seen are completely white and black
most people wont agree with you in that the orange is badass but its your taste I guess
you can always change them
Of course, but I'm just not gonna buy a bike which I don't like the look of only to then spend probably a lot of money to change the color of the frame & wheels. Like, I wouldn't buy a car if I'd have to respray it to make it look good either.
Well yea, obviously. Different people have different tastes.
it looks slightly different from Indian model
