Great video! I wish this was uploaded 1 year earlier, lol. I had such a time trying to figure out how to release the shifting rod. I can see the lower inside exhaust housing is just a bad design, I had the same issues on getting it to stay put. Solid motor and fast motor.
Hey Brandon love your videos I have a 84 90 Vro trying to get a good water pump what is the hose coming from back of the lower that water should come out of also I think mine is clogged
you make it look easy. always stressful even after doing a dozen of these on Johnson 90hp over the years. I still learned a lot from you. bookmarked this episode to review- got another to do before duck season. gotta order pump assembly, lube and adhesive. You have a favorite place to order?
Brandon, I have a 1986 SPL Johnson 88hp. I changed the water pump, BTW Thank you for the help, and put the outboard back together. I thought that I would try the shifting before I start it up and have found that when I put the shifter in forward the prop turns with some force in both directions. The same with the reverse. On my inboard Mercruiser if you put it in forward it will only turn one way, the same if yu put the shifter in revers it will only turn one way.. Is the outboard different seeing how with force it will turn in either direction? I just bought the boat and did not shift it after I found it would start and the compression in each cylinder was 118 to 223 psi in all 4 cylinders. I kind of scares me so I thought that I would ask you. Did I do something wrong putting it back together?
Two times now I’ve had trouble removing the inside bolt that is under the trim tab going through the housing. The aluminum oxidizes and causes it to squeeze against the bolt. I’ve tried drilling out the hole a bit for more clearance and never seize compound and it seems that somehow it gets removed. Do you have any suggestions on how to treat the hole, bolt, threads whatever for easy future removal? Thank you
I notice when you put the water pump on the shaft it doesn't rest completely flat on the plate , is that because the impeller sticks out of the housing a little bit ? I just installed one and it was the same way the blades of the impeller stick out of the housing just a bit and it was almost like I had to force it down, it's a oem replacement .
Fishing line in Arizona , interesting concept ! Lol. I use a brake bleeder to test my lower units ( Auto zone carries it ) and a swivel from a pump hose ! As many lowers as you do why not bulk gear lube with a pump on the pail ? It’s turning out to be a nice outboard , are you putting it on your pontoon ? How hard do you think it would be to build a standup boat like yours ?
Probably prett easy, however it depends on you are with fiberglass work. Hey if you see anything unique or interesting at your show let me know. I really like weird odd-ball stuff. Or evinrude paraphernalia.

How necessary is it to remove the intake on the carbs + surrounding items? Really just want to unlock gear shaft pin without having to remove a bunch of other items. Have a '93 88SPL. Cannot find a single video online for the life of me relating directly to my motor. Thanks!
Yeah, but I havent come across anything new, or video worthy, in some time. Ive done a water pump, lower reseal, power trim repair, and various other things.
The yamaha system is about a million times easier!...although yamaha blatantly copied the omc engine designs, they didn't copy the shift linkage thank goodness!

This was the most useful video ever since directions and poor pictures make this easy to screw up. Thanks for sharing
thanks for all your videos you have away to explain everything so clear and good and clear camera on most of the videos ......
I watched your video on replacing the water pump on the 90 h.p johnson I found it very helpfull thank you
Nice clear crisp narrative. Thank you for taking time to film and post this video. I would like to see a five minute video on your lower unit vice.
Was thinking the same thing
Thanks for the details and close ups Brandon, another good one.

Did you place the shifter in "R" prior to disasseembly?
Hi Brandon, I love your video's! By chance, do you know the Part # for a water pump kit for a 1987 Outboard 88 - E88MSLCUS?

One question somebody know if it's normal water coming out from the plate with for boats in the leg
Hi Brandon. I have a 90SPL and a old parts 88SPL engine. Will the lower unit from my 88 fit my 90 ?
What gear lube do you use on the Johnson 90?
Hi Brandon, great videos. What are your thoughts on a 95 88SPL? Anything I should be looking for? About to buy one on a Glastron
Is this a good motor?
Dude. Just got a 97 Glastron with a 88SPL ! Overheat alarm went off so I've been watching this video 90x. Struggling with the shift rod.
Which kit did you use for this motor?
Can I use RTV ultra black for gasket sealant or do I need to get the stuff you have
