During surgery a nerve to my left vocal cord was severed. Because I was a singer and a teacher the loss of voice was huge. I had the medialization surgery but it never gave me my singing voice. Pitch changes are tricky because the cords have to stretch and contract as well as move back and forth. The "object" is a silicone shim and I've had it for 14 years. Your voice sounds very natural. My speaking voice is okay but weak, and my singing is breathy even though I work at it very hard. Ty
I'm thrilled you found the video useful. Good luck to you and your daughter with the upcoming surgery. I hope the results are so good that you find yourself wishing she would just stop talking.
I wanted to chime in on this video again for those like me that may find it if this should ever happen to you. I lost my voice nearly 70 days ago, however am happy to report it's coming back nicely naturally on it's own - I've been doing voice therapy 1-2 times per week, which may or may not be the cause, but I'm finally able to speak again. my voice is not 100%, but 75-80% is good for me considering I have been whispering for over 2 months now!
Sorry to hear about your voice. If your problem is a paralyzed vocal cord like I had, the odds are still very favorable that your voice will come back on it's own. But there's no telling how long it might be. I would strongly recommend against considering a permanent fix at this stage, and ENT doctors would, too. Since you need your voice for work, you could get a temporary medialization from an ENT doctor to help you speak for a while. It won't be perfect, but should be functional for a while.
I lost my voice to this 18 days ago and am beside myself. My ability to speak is crucial to our business that supports my family of 4 which is what makes it even more scary. Would you recommend I seek a procedure sooner than waiting like you did? You lost a year of waiting when you could have done the procedure 2 months into it - do you have an opinion about this? I'm beyond upset right now and just don't know how to cope with this - I'm do glad you got your voice back!
thank you for your insight and video on this.... as you said, there is not a lot of research available and this is one of those rare conditions that you had no idea even existed until you have it. I wonder if you also considered trying acupuncture when you could not speak?? I'm also unaware of your religious values (not my business), but a little prayer never hurt anybody. Again, congrats on regaining your voice - it's amazing what we take for granted in life.
