iv'e seen quite a few comments like this one and while i whole hardheartedly agree i always saw the original as i cry of anger at the way mental health was treated.
Yeah the original is basically like the internal struggle and this version is what we let the people at *insert wherever you fake being happy* see.
Original: The first few years of having depression
This: When you've had depression for years and have learned to laugh at your own suicidality
I see them as two ways to react to it. The original is raging at the situation, this one would be when you accept it.

Oddly, this is a great representation of the suicidal plea for help. Too many times those who seek counsel for such thoughts are simply told, "But you look good" and sent on their way because they have not lost the ability to bathe and wear clean clothes. Outward appearances (and often even demeanor) should be set aside when someone's talking about self harm; it's the functional ones who are able to act on it.

But these days you also get told that if you look depressed you’re faking it. Everywhere you see getting help being promoted, and at the same time the complete opposite.

Yeah I hear that. I think the bottom line is just that people are uncomfortable with the subject; they don't have any clue how to deal with such intense emotion and so the instinctive reaction is to minimize and dismiss. Same thing often happens with people who are grieving. No one knows what to say, so they don't say anything. Emotional crisis is such an isolating phenomenon.
Laughing on the outside, but no one sees the tears inside, because most people who suffer from depression never let on ...

As someone who suffers from Bi-polar depression and suicidal thoughts when teens my own age are going around school acting like fuckboys and hoes and listening to billie eilish and Xxx and then saying that they're sad and it pisses me off. It's a new style to them. not a form of mental illness. I'm just happy I graduated now and got myself a job.
