I have the answer to the 'Rubik Cube' pallette! When you remove it from the cup, make sure you hold the small latch up under the big one to open the lid. I don't know why but only using the big latch on its own makes it harder to open however using the small and big latch together is a piece of cake. Also it stops you breaking a nail when it suddenly pops open.
Looking forward to your “my first time using my brass palette”! video - you must use her soon. I hear it’s wonderful out in the field. Hope it works well for you.
I also thought, that the design of the Van Gogh palette wasted a lot of space , but it is actually really cool, cause the pans each sit in there own little wells. This really helps to keep them from getting contaminated.
Most Van Gogh are fully lightfast; pigment information is easily available. I consider them full art grade. If using from tubes I advise allowing them to dry more rather than using fresh from the tube; they work oddly straight from the tube but fantastic from dry. Tubes are by far the better deal and you can pre mix custom mixes using tube watercolours and make dupes! Here’s a few helpful tips for custom mixes I’ll add here ‘Vintage-pastel’ dupes mix 1 part Chinese white with 1 part titanium buff then use this as the base adding other paint to make dupes. Specifically ex; Periwinkle; a touch of ultramarine blue. Ex: suede ; a touch of raw umber, etc. Green gold and quinacridone golds are great bases for real plant greens (mother colour paint green) mixed with Pthalo greens Both PG 7 and pg 36. My ultimate version is M.graham nickel quinacridone gold plus a mix of pg7/36 ! Vibrant black is a deep blue mixed with a strong red brown. My favourite right now is m.graham Anthraquinone mixed with Terra Rosa. Here’s a few for gouache using HimI/Miya. (three sets referenced the number listed lists the set/s the colour is in; white is in all sets.) Mud; Coffee (50) +Earth yellow (24/56/50) + burnt umber (24/56/50) + touch of white Pale golden wood; mostly white + earth yellow (24/56/50) + medium yellow (24/56/50) + purple rose (24/56/50) touch of burnt umber (24/56/50) Princess grey ; light princess (50) + moon grey (50) Neon red; peach blossom (56/50) + medium yellow (24/56/50) Golden joy (24/56/50) orange +medium yellow+ochre+earth yellow. I hope this helps people these were some of my most useful discoveries! I’m in Canada, fun video thanks.
I would highly recommend a pocket palette or demi palette from Art Toolkit. Of course you cannot use standard half pans but the liitle square pans or larger work really well and I find as I'm quite sparing with my paint as I paint small, they are plenty large enough. They work perfectly with magnets and the mixing area is really good too. I bought extra mixing pans and have an Art Toolkit pocket palette just for mixing. And yes you have to get them from just outside Seattle, but they've been so handy and have paid for themselves and delivery charges several times over.

I LOVE your nails! 😍 This is such a thorough presentation of options for travel palettes, I loved them all, but I must admit, the brass one is my favorite! I don’t mind that it is heavier, I prefer that actually because I tend to accidentally drop lightweight things. 😅
Lovely video as always. You can never have enough palettes. I have my main Daniel smith palettes and then a large Schmincke and Qor one. Then I've accumulated an array of smaller palettes that'll I'll break out occassionally. I really love some of my handmade watercolors and keep them in a bunch of novelty tins. I am in Florida trying to recover from covid (mild thankfully because vaxxed!!) and missing being able to leave my house.
I live on the Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico and will be traveling to India next week. I plan to watercolor on the plane and throughout my trip in India.
The only issue I found with the Van Gogh one is that amazon pans ( in case you need to add or change colors) will not fit well 😁 thank you for your video! 🌹
I love your videos so much!!!!!😊 I'm from MN, USA so even in this tiny rural dot I get to see your amazing travels and reviews which is awesome!💗 The stay wet palette latch 😂😂😂 oh, man. I'm tempted to get one because the design is GENIUS but I will probably break it immediately so I'm torn. And that shiny brass set.😍 love it! Forever a fan and I can't wait for your next video!😊
I have a ton of palettes that I have collected over the years. I started with a plastic pallet but find I like to use a metal pallet out and about, in order to use it's metallic properties. ( but I will use either) Tfs
Thanks! While I have some of these or similar palettes, I have now fallen in love with Expeditionary Art toolkit's tiny palettes. They are metal but super lightweight. They have 3 sizes of tiny palettes. They have special tiny pans that also come in 3 sizes. I encourage you to check them out. I think you would love them. I also love doing plein air painting. I'm always looking for the smallest and lightest set up I can bring and still have what I want.
I think my Amazon wish list knows when I’ve been watching your videos lol. I’ve bought so much in the past I’m trying to hold off but that stay wet palette is about to get me. I’m in North Carolina in the States, just got back from visiting Las Vegas a couple of days ago. Unrelated: I’m planning to catch up on all your lives while I’m still on sabbatical because I just love all your videos! 💕
The brass palette is the ONE, but if I was starting from scratch I do like the Van Gough palette. It’s just so cute and it has so many half pans of watercolor. Fun video, thanks!
The brass of COURSE is my favorite, it literally has everything. The field box is a close second! The Van Gogh isn’t as easy to find in the states. I loved how you edited this! So much fun to watch 🤩😍😎❤️🤗🤗🤗🤗
I bought a cheap craft set from a local big box store with a 1/2 off sale -six bucks I think. Plastic but a good size for plein air or travel. I pulled the craft paint out and gave them to a coworker for her child. ( it’s like your small, 12-pan W&N one) I can clip it on a small clipboard, clip on small metal water cups and am good to go. But it sure is fun to see what else is out there. I also bought the Transon paint saver for my gouache (like what you have without the cup). In fact I bought 2. Great ideas.
I love the brush from Van Gogh. It’s number 6 and 191 series. Don’t know why but it’s so good and my must have. I am ready to buy another set just to get a new one
North of Seattle WA state. Enjoying your channel, don’t have one myself. (Really nothing to say, but lots to learn!😊) I have the small W&N cottman set & the W&N pro blue pocket box. They are both great. Congrats on your channel & enjoy your brass pocket box. 👍🎨✨
very nice video, myself i enjoyed each second. i used to stick the watercolor block with a drop of gum arabic and it works. thanks again for this nice video, waiting more
Fun travel palettes - ready for plein air painting? Do you have any bijou watercolor palettes? I enjoy the Whiskey Painters Bijou Box...or maybe I just like the story :)
I got a good deal on the Cotman field box. I pimp it in a few ways. I flicked the Cotman paints out and squeezed my own chosen palette. I put magnetic strips on the back. Lastly I can slip a sweat band around it and it holds some travel brushes snugly.
Ohh I missed the live chat 😁 because I was filling my new Black Metal 48 Half Pans travel palette with 20 Winsor & Newton Cotman tube colors. This video is awesome. I am hoping to get the 45 Winsor & Newton palette you showed. I have a W&N Cotman Watercolor Compact Field Set of 14 colors that came with brush. I also want to get the Gouache Palette that you showed. As for the Brass Palette, it’s a great dream palette that I will have to wait for a while to be able to get. Definitely a lot of choices when it comes to travel palettes. I am glad 😃 to see that I am not the only artist who loves to use a wide & wonderful variety of travel palettes. Thanks for sharing this fun & informational video with us.
@@SketchesnScrubs I love 💕 the Compact Field Set because the variety of colors are perfect for my landscapes and birds paintings. Plenty of mixing areas, a place to hold clean water, and it clips nicely & flat on my artist board or I can use the thumb hole with either hand to paint with. The little water cup clips to either side of the palette as well. I got it on sale at Amazon.
Hi I’m from the UK! Yes I made it to the end! 😀…I have most of those palettes too cos watercolour and tiny palettes are so enticing! The Fraser Price is just stunning isn’t it? There’s also the tiny heavyweight box that takes 12-14 paints which Cornellison carries though the mixing space is getting really small. I like to carry it with a small artisan porcelain palette. You can get the model with a water container attached too but that makes it heavier. I have the Winsor & Newton vintage one but Schmincke still do it. The tiny palette is also carried by whiskey painters I think and some artisan watercolour makers. Cass Art and Daler Rowney also do a bijou 1/4 pan palette which is very cute with 18 colours and will hold I think up to a size 8 travel brush depending on make. But get ready to refill the most used colours quite often! Great for small sketches on the go though. Funny thing is I still have such an affection for the little plastic Cotman design because it’s so lightweight and practical.
Hi. As Always I love your videos. You really inspire me, just want to go paint, but that has to wait until me and my baby is over our flu. I loved it when you added the bit cleaning your palette, I am obsessed with a super clean palette. 😊 I am from Pretoria, South Africa 🇿🇦
Great info! I just put an order in for the cotman field box. I'll be swapping out those paints but that price difference justifies it. Oh, I am from the Seattle, Washington, US area!
Hi from Germany! The Van Gogh palette was my first set of watercolors and I really enjoy it, but I agree about the waste of space, so I’ve been looking at smaller alternatives. I’ve picked up a few metal and wooden ones to try out and I have my eye on the Cotman field box, just not sure if I need the flask since I like watertank brushes
@@SketchesnScrubs Pembrokeshire is gorgeous. The costal path has some very beautiful beaches and bays. People walk the costal path because it is so stunning.
I love those little brushes. If you’re out doing field sketches with a pen / pencil, you only need the little brush to add some color. I figure it’s why all the field kits have small (detail) brushes. Most of your sketches will be done in a 5x8 or smaller book. The Van Gogh set is excellent for watercolor. You can pop that pallet out & discover there’s extra space beneath … I prefer it over the WN which indeed is sleeker. MidAltantic US. Maryland
Hello from New Hampshire! I love love love that tiny Winsor & Newton one! I gifted myself some of the Art Tool Kits palettes that are absolutely the most adorable ever! They’re made for expeditionary painting. You should check them out. I’m also awaiting my gouache palette to arrive-I hope I don’t have the same latch problems! 🌸
A good idea for the brass palette or really any other pallet that you want to add a ring to are the PopSockets they're like steel they're real heavy duty and it's a thumb hole or a finger hole it's big enough for a thumb and it's very sturdy I think it would be better than any of the rings that come on any of the pallets I just thought of this while I was driving and had to comment lol
the struggle to open the stay wet palette 😂😂 i have the cotman 12 pan set (also my very first watercolour set!) and what i like about it is the size. it doesn't take too much space but i could definitely go smaller because i use the primaries the most. love the video! greetings from germany
Thank you for watching and your lovely comment! I’m soo glad it was helpful. If you have any questions or need any more help, I’m always happy to chat art supplies x
New sub from Ohio, USA! I have several little pallets and believe my biggest is my White Knights set, the weight though! Another UA-camr had the same issue with the stay wet pallet and placed a hair tie/rubber band around it and it has done well to keep it closed.
I’m in soggy Cambridgeshire, so probably not far away from you judging by your accent. Love hearing how different people feel about palettes. I’ve got many of the same. How I feel about them is an evolving process. I’ve come to realise they key for me is flexibility, if I can’t change it, I get bored.
Aha! At last somebody who actually bought it for themselves. Everyone else on Utube seems to have been " gifted " it. The Sun will burn itself out before anyone gifts one for me - so I bought it too 😊....
FYI for you. Check out Sarah's recent video on revitalizing quoache in this palette after heavy use. Such an eyeopener and so helpful. (relaxing video too) have this as well and just started filling.
I'm an Australian artist painting and watching your presentation in Thailand. My pads are 300gsm size 270mm x 390mm. I carry 24 large W&N pans in a W&N fold out palette or 36 large tubes of Daniel Smith. 8 Brushes in a brush holding zip case. 2 litres of water in plastic bottles and 2 coffee jars for brush washing. With pencils, tissues etc. in a compact back pack and a big sun hat. Your smaller travel kits with carefully selected 12 half pans, a 0.8mm black waterproof fine line drawing pen, some larger Kolinsky sable travel brushes and 200gsm size 167mmx250mm watercolour pads would still be great fun. Aquarelle Arches make a 300gsm size 15cm x 30cm 'Cinemascope' landscape pad for big feel small paintings. Small paintings are a must when travelling, easy to store and make great mementos and family heirlooms. And they cost a fraction of big paintings to produce. All good fun 👍👍👍

The only one I tried and Loved is the stay wet palette 😍 my only problem with that there isn't enough mixing space- referring to the lid not sure if it's actually for mixing 😅 But I used the plastic sheet that comes with tombow blender marker set as it is very light, nice size and most importantly easy to clean Also the blender set also comes with a very helpful water spray 👌🏽👌🏽

I live in the north of Alberta Canada by the peace river. Very large and beautiful river.
That sounds wonderful Melanie ❤️
Love your art haul videos ❤️ from Ireland!
@@SketchesnScrubs where is the difference between the cotman and the professional set? Paint quality?
Very good informative video as usual. Thinking of getting a Van Gough pallet myself. Originally from wales but live in Australia now.

❤ I love this! Great video!
Hey hey from Thibodaux, Louisiana!! ❣️ Another great one!!
Thanks for sharing - South Africa🌺
New subbie here. This is super helpful. Going to get my new palette soon, thanks for your help, it’s helped me decide before I buy! Hugz, Tree
Thank you for watching and your lovely comment! I’m soo glad it was helpful. If you have any questions or need any more help, I’m always happy to chat art supplies x
Watching from Greece, as you already know, dear. What a nice neat pallette! 😉
@@SketchesnScrubs😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 have a lovely weekend, too, agapi mou!
New sub from Ohio, USA! I have several little pallets and believe my biggest is my White Knights set, the weight though!
Another UA-camr had the same issue with the stay wet pallet and placed a hair tie/rubber band around it and it has done well to keep it closed.
@@SketchesnScrubs White Nights and you too!
Nice video, thank you from Ottawa, Canada!
Check out the Art Tool kit from expeditionary arts. Their palette is the size of a business card.
Aha! At last somebody who actually bought it for themselves. Everyone else on Utube seems to have been " gifted " it. The Sun will burn itself out before anyone gifts one for me - so I bought it too 😊....
I truly want the van Gough set 😫
FYI for you. Check out Sarah's recent video on revitalizing quoache in this palette after heavy use. Such an eyeopener and so helpful. (relaxing video too) have this as well and just started filling.
Amazon sells the Frazier price DUPE for $80 and it’s been sitting in my cart for a month now
I'm an Australian artist painting and watching your presentation in Thailand.
@@SketchesnScrubs Started as a holiday 8 years ago, now I rent a one bedroom house for $36 a week. I have a motor scooter and a car. I live in Sukhothai, in the county; it was the capitol of Thailand in the thirteenth century. A scooter costs less than $4000 new, Honda PCX-160 with CVT auto fitted with a top box is good. Learn to ride at home, and get an international licence. If living in Thailand go to a riding school in Thailand and get a licence. Realise Thais drive by local convention, the road laws are often ignored, give way take care, wear a helmet. A car is better. Road laws on the internet, Thailand is right hand drive. (Cambodia is left hand drive, better food, French influence and Anchor Wat era temples). Getting. a Thai licence is not easy for you, I am over 50 (79 actually) with superannuation and have a Retirement Visa, and permanent Thai address. My first bike I bought new using the Honda retailers address, as a demo bike. Expect to lose 50% depreciation exiting the showroom.
Meter taxis and tuk-tuks are cheap. Interstate flights are cheap $100 one way. Trains are a fun experience. Buses get you A to B. travel light.
Large paintings are a problem when flying overseas and using check in luggage. 22"x15"fits in a suit case is practically speaking the upper limit. I started small with a back pack of art materials on a motorbike. Strapped on a plastic stool.

Thanks so much Marc! Xx
Greetings from beautiful, downtown Arkansas!
Interesting video. I found it to be informative and yes, entertaining.
Thank you for sharing and the hard work!
Be well and satisfied...
The only one I tried and Loved is the stay wet palette 😍 my only problem with that there isn't enough mixing space- referring to the lid not sure if it's actually for mixing 😅
But I used the plastic sheet that comes with tombow blender marker set as it is very light, nice size and most importantly easy to clean
Also the blender set also comes with a very helpful water spray 👌🏽👌🏽

Watching from Denmark! New subscriber too. Great video 😊
Nice video! How are you liking the Frazier Price palette? It looks fantastic but maybe a bit flimsy. Would you recommend it as a brass palette? :)

I'm in Toronto, Ontario Canada. I love your videos. When will we get more plein air videos. I loved the ones you've done already. But I need more....Please. (I'm very polite...Canadian, Eh!)
On Amazon there is an empty palette by Jerry Q, it folds up very nicely. I wonder if anyone can give an opinion on it.
So I live in Gibraltar. Not sure if you might have heard of it but its basically part of the UK. Although many might argue that since we are at the bottom of Spain we are Spanish ^.^ I wonder if you've ever heard of it? :)
@@SketchesnScrubs cool! To be honest i expect people not to know it hahaha. You should come! Ill definitely show you around. Also we have spain at our fingers so can show you some nice places close by! The answer is probably obvious but what does MVP stand for? Watching from the UK
Hello, it means most valuable person ☺️.
@@SketchesnScrubs you’re welcome! ❤️
I used the same gouache palette that you used and now it stinks. The water in the gouache has gone stagnant and I can no longer use it. 🤷♀️
@@SketchesnScrubs thank you so much for the advice. No one told me this before I decanted all my gouache into the palette. I have learned now for the future. Thanks!
