  • We compare the Aterna Strada DL on a Volkswagen T6.1 and the genuine VW tailgate mounted bike carrier.
This is a perfect example of what's available now that electric bikes are becoming popular in the campervan world.

Yes, I enjoyed your video too! On our VW T6 campervan, we installed the Yakima Fullswing Swing Away Hitch Mount 4 Bike Carrier. Strong, sturdy, and swings away with ease to open the tailgate. It's great! The cons are your bike must have a fairly straight Toptube (although you can buy an adaptor bar ), it swings to the right only (which really isn't a problem)and you have to buy a bike number plate. Also, Yakima makes a ski and snowboard rack that fits onto it :)

VW Rack direct from VW Dealership £570. I have a tow bar rack for another vehicle but to have a tow bar fitted to my Transporter was over double price including mods required to the electrics. I like both racks but I haven’t used the VW rack much yet but seems sturdy & can be left in the van. I also like the idea of obtaining a luggage carrier bag to increase storage/ carrying capacity if no bike or fewer bikes are transported providing < 60kg total weight

    Really enjoyed that video Steven.
I would be interested in a video about security / safety options - in particular about alarms, dash cams and trackers.
I suspect alarms is easiest and most probably get the VW alarm option.
Would be interested in your thoughts and experiences of different dash cam options, both front and rear and the benefits of hardwiring, etc. I know VW suggest Kenwood but I see BlackVue mentioned a lot.
Also interested in your experiences of trackers, specifically benefits of S5 over S7 and if you recommend other systems such as Ghost.

I had the Atera rack and was quite happy with it, but I now have the Pro-User Diamant SG2 Plus for two electric bikes, and feel that its design and construction are superior. It slides easily to allow the tailgate to be opened, and when not in use it folds very neatly into a suitcase-sized bag, which is supplied. It was a little bit cheaper than the Atera, too.

Another vote for the Diamant SG2 plus 👍

Interesting and welcome item. I think that it may be worth emphasising that not all towbar carriers are rated for ebikes which are usually around 25kg each with battery mounted. So for ebikes it should really be a specific 'ebike' carrier - my Witter carrier is rated at 60kg for 2 bikes and we remove the batteries in transit, giving us a nice margin of safety.

Feel like some key differences were missed. With the tailgate rack, can it be lifted with bikes on? I’m guessing no? 🤷🏼‍♂️ Obvious advantage however that you can leave the rack on very easily when not in use.
I have the Strada DL. Very pleased 👍🏼☺️.

Any thoughts on tow ball bike racks for VW T6 with barn doors?

I Think the Towbar bike rack is way better especially if your a short ass like me 🤣
I had the vw tailgate one but I found it very hard to lift the bikes up onto the rack, you need to be fairly tall like yourself eh 🤔

Great video; I tow a caravan as well, and am looking for a twin bike rack that isn't as long, so you can still manoeuvre properly...do you know of any that mount in the same way as the OEM? Thank you 😊 PS can't wait to get my Jerba roof fitted next year 😍

Try the Fiamma T6 (presumably also fits the 6.1) tailgate rack, available as a 2 bike rack and expandable to 4. I chose that one as it sits much closer to the tailgate than the VW one. I have mine set for 4 bikes and tow an Eriba. The Fiamma isn’t as well made as the VW one but I’m happy as there’s much more clearance for the caravan (obviously check carefully). Might be some photos on my Instagram and also some footage on one of my my Friars Court CL videos from July 2020.

yep, it's crash tested, you can get a seat belt as an optional extra if you want to use it as a travelling seat 😉
