Time to condense a 30-minute video into something you can go through quickly!
0:35 CP Rail welded rail train
0:57 Western Maryland steam loco 1309. It actually ran for the C&O, but is quite similar to the USRA articulateds the Western Maryland might've had (seen again at 2:33)
1:43 Insert Initial D- Deja Vu
    3:53 Strasburg steam at night
5:14 both NS inspection cars rebuilt from locomotives! 34 and 38!
    6:06 CN SD70M-2, BC Rail C44-9WL, and a Grand Trunk Western GP9R
    6:52 a Franken-Gevo rebuilt from an ex-NS SD40-2
7:04 KCSM gray as mid-train DPU between mixed freight and intermodal
7:08 warbonnet, H1, H2, KCS Southern Belle, and NS black
8:00 N&W 475 running round as a P42 towing an ACS64 passes. Steam, diesel, and electric moving in one shot!
8:36 what are these tarpaulined units?! NRE exports?
9:48 the horizon car on the Southwest Chief from last time
10:16 KCS 4006 on a BNSF coal train
10:28 thick black exhaust from this K&O (or SKOL) unit
12:13 the wrecked GP39-2 as seen on the thumbnail. It was originally built for the Reading in 1974 and was still green until about 1992 and got wrecked this October
12:48 BNSF H2, UP yellow, KCS Southern Belle, CSX YN3b, and NS black
    13:49 CiT SW1500
14:04 the third different steam engine in the grab bag, CN 89
15:10 Virginia museum of Transport excursion train
16:42 La Grange holiday parade down the railroad tracks. and of course, a CSX freight train took part
18:35 Amtrak 203 leading the Empire Builder
19:00 the conductor put out a step for the private car on this stopped Amtrak in Ashland
    20:32 UP 1988 trailing
20:50 SP gray as DPU on a coal train. This is how I remember seeing SP units when I was a kid
21:02 CN ET44AC triple-header in Wichita. The 2nd unit has CN100 on the side and the nose logo, the 3rd unit has the nose logo and standard CN logo on the side, while the lead unit has normal CN logos all around
21:14 Quanah's holiday parade. One of the fire trucks is a water tanker which you don't see much of in more populated areas
22:27 Auto Train goes slow past the people set up in Folkston
    23:18 fireworks in Oklahoma City
    25:14 UP 1943 as DPU
25:43 UP 7272 has probably my favorite UP livery of all the UP units that were recently repainted
26:23 heavy duty flatcar and caboose
27:45 NS towing the Lake Shore Limited
27:53 guy walks on the stopped flatbed to get across. The most tempting piece of rolling stock to ride on.
28:04 an empty Schnabel car with caboose. Usually there would be a large transformer or tank in the middle

Two questions for an engineer or conductor..
    1. With so much foreign power in use, are there differences between the identical types of each railroad? In the airline world, a Southwest 737 is different than an Alaska 737, and likewise 737s from all airlines are different.
    2. If, for example, there are 6 units on the head end, and (at night) the lights under the handrails are off, does that mean that those units are inactive and not providing propulsive power?

      1. Yes, there are minor variations, but all must conform to AAR standards.
      2. Lights are exactly that..lights. They have nothing to due with indication of whether or not a unit is online.

Railroads do spec them different but their pretty similar enough that you can operate them without too much learning. And no, the ditch lights don't indicate the engine status, they are purely there for visibility and not needed when the locomotive isn't leading.

It wasn't the ditch lights i was referring to, it was the lights under the side steps of each unit. On aircraft, the red strobe must be on when engines are operating, and since some of those 5 or 6 engines on the head end had those lights on and some didn't, I wondered if that indicated an engine in use or not.

@@markmonse5285 None of the exterior lights are tied to engine running, their switchable from inside the cab. So the answer is still no.

Buying a locomotive is like buying a car in some regards certain things are standard and other thing years ago were optional When the locomotive companies began to construct locomotives with short hoods The NS Railway was told it would cost them for the high short hoods they relented
