My opinion: if you want to play the 6 string bass, go directly for it. Start with the trebbly strings, and get used slowly to the 6th string. With time, your hands will get the flexibility needed.
I have a 6 string bass and it is kinda difficult to jam at times. It's intimidating, not gonna lie. Thought about trading it... but forget all that nonsense. You can't get good at something if you don't have it. I practice daily and it does get better. Johnny Long you're an awesome bassist and a badass human being. Keep making these awesome vids. 🤘😎
May I ask, wich 6 string bass model do you use? My first 6 string bass is an IBANEZ BTB 676 wich I love so much. I bought a Yamaha TRB6II last year as Christmas present and I love it to. Many of my bass fellows are impressed seeing a girl playing those two 35 inch scale basses. I must admit those basses are not for small hands.
Informative and entertaining video. Fun watching you. I played 6 string for many years. I have a Carvin LB76 and the neck is not as wide as the Yamaha but muting the unused strings was getting used to but I learn to mute while i'm playing naturally. I approach it by playing the middle 4 EADG and you have the extra B and C. Its a simple approach that worked for me. Thank you for the tips. Its good to learn as much as you can. Love ya bro!
Been playing four nonstop for a while and love it, was scared to go higher with my tiny hands but I tried an esp six string the other day and I liked it so much that I got one coming in the mail 🥳. I figure instead of going back n forth from guitar to bass so much this will keep me on the bass path
I went from 4 to 6 but I played guitar first and I missed having 6 strings but didnt want to play guitar anymore lol it actually helped me play better (mostly just a placebo thing for sure) because i felt more confident and less intimidated. I play way more though than I did with the 4 string I had. I basically learned on my six string as weird as that may sound.
Ok awesome, I'm a guitar player too, getting into bass more and I think I can handle this 6 string thing. I was looking for this comment before asking who went from playing guitar to 6 string bass.
Ive been playing a 4 string for about a year now and wanted to move up to a 5 but could find one that worked for me. I tried a esp ltd 6 string just for fun before i left my local gc and its the perfect bass. The amount of strings is slightly overwhelming and i have no idea what to do with the higher strings (i play extreme metal so there ya go lol) but the width of the neck felt perfect. It was so wide it forced my fingers to stay straight to hit the B string. I think im gonna buy it when i can afford it.
Hey now! Well, I started out on a 4 string Ibanez and then moves up to a 6 string Ibanez SR506E. Like you, I don't how to read music and NEVER took lessons but, I have a very SHARP ear and can match/find it on the scale. So, hopefully you're doing great by now and I'm getting better by the days too!😃👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾👍🏾💯
I went from 4 to 6 string spacing was exactly the same on my 4 as my trb6p so I was a very easy transition. I didn't go back to 4 for 5 years that also helped, then I met a fella by the name Frank Yardly he was a Yamaha rep and he introduced me to another guy from Japan (can't spell his name) but he had a fretless one made for me and that thing is a beast! My point here is if you go to 6 stay there and the transition will be much easier. Now to kick this 10 string bass in the butt...
Well I played the 4 & 5 string basses for decades. I hated 5 strings. I have had the 6 string Ibanez Bass Guitar now for about a decade. I LOVED it from day one. I pulled it out and 5th fret tuned it the whole way down at a half step down as I use for my vocal abilities, and did the spider for a cpl months and then it took a while to become natural on it. You are talented. All of the silliness was over the top. lol But good video. Lol @ 2 string. With all that being said...Once you get use to a 6 string Bass it is a smooth flowing awesome thing.
hey Jerry Long I got a question for you. It's about a base I had bought a base from Matt. I think music friends some like that but I bought this base and every since that I had to base I was trying to play on it and my base were going in and out and I trying to see what should I do about it and how can I go about itbecause it's been in and out since I had it
Buddy I've been learning how to play bass I had a 4 in the 5 but I just bought a brand new 6 string brand lehnen and I love it I'm not playing the other bases no more
I have picked up a six string bass a played a little. The problem I have with six string basses is that the neck is so wide and if you going to be playing for awhile the bass tends to get heavy. Also you have to take time to learn not only how to play the notes but to learn how to mute. But if you like it that much go for it. I play four and five string bases and I'm much more comfortable. And as far as slap bass goes I use that for a full in I'm not going to play an entire song slapping unless that what the song calls for. And also even on the five and four string bass you need to learn how to mute the strings
I started on the 4 string but my organist said it lacked the low range needed in gospel play so I purchased a 5 string. Playing the 5 string and still do, I toyed around with the 6 string but I didn’t like the string spacing! Until I played a Smith! I don’t slap much on my 6’s I usually groove out on them. Come to think about it I slap really to show off skill or for warming up! I play my 2 6 string Smith more than my 5’s.
I have to get used to mines, I've got a lefty Carvin LB7 6 for a present back in 98' or 99' and the neck is wide just like your Yamaha. Lawd have mercy, the poor chile done sat up so long that the finish got faded ( Ruby Red Quilt with gold hardware ) but I'm trying to force myself to get used to it, since it's the lightest in weight and the best sounding bass I have, has a nice smooth tone when it's in passive mode and she really bites in active mode, lol right now trying to master over hand because I can't slap on her like I do a 5 & 4 string, which I really started getting used to my 5 string ( Carvin B5 ) in the last two or three years, especially slapping on it cuz I feel a wee bit clumsy tryna smack her lol...
I've been looking to get me a 6 string bass :) just bc I'm a huge fan of John Myung? And Bo (Japanese bassist for Babymetal). I'm mainly a 5 string guy, but I really like the ESP basses.
