I was expecting Joel to die, but not in the way he did. More of a self-sacrifice to save Ellie toward the end. But considering that they advertised the game as if Joel was going to go on this journey with her was blatant false advertising. I played the game once and never want to touch it again.

How they force us to give a fuck about Abby and Lev as they essentially kill or try to kill everyone we’ve grown to love. 5. The fact that they didn’t give us a choice at the end on whether or not we wanted to end Abby. 6. If we killed everyone at the hospital end TLOU1 where the fuck was Abby?

They tried too hard with the Revenge breeds Revenge, because the way they went about of achieving that is killing off all the good characters, leaving us with characters that are only good with making decisions that will get you killed instantly in every situation, but somehow keeping them alive because they had to make money off of a character that the additionally changed to make more favorable to gen Z and A. Third "Last of Us 2" video I'm seeing on UA-cam and nobody has mentioned the sheer brutality of how Abby killed Joel and her deliberate torture to him.
It isn't just that Joel died but playing the character who really wanted Joel to suffer to the point where she tourniquets him to prevent a quick death was a dumb idea. Have no sympathy for Abby no matter what we saw from her story after seeing HOW she killed Joel. Ellie and Joel never showed that type of darkness and cruelty. They did things to survive. Abby could have killed Joel quick and she didn't. She took pleasure in making it slow.

If I'm being brutually honest, I don't think there was nothing wrong with part 2. Part 2 felt like 'part 3', it should have been 'part 3' really. Everyone that played the first game really wanted a sequel between Joel and Ellie, so they can go back to the father and daughter relationship and see what could have happened in this zombie post virus surival world. They could have made that game and explored the damaged relationship when Ellie finds out Joel lied. If that was the game of course with more story content to it, and then they release part 3 later where they kill Joel and Abby is introduced. Then Naughty Dog would have gotten a really good trilogy. But to add more salt to the wounds regarding the leaks and of course how social media and Naught Dog handled the backlash. It put everyone off, in return it failed because no one, or the mass audience had moved onto other games. Attacking fans and calling them bigots or sexist, racists and so on, didn't help the game or its future. It certainly didn't help ND, even if there is a part 3.. I doubt it will get the same response. Because everyone has moved onto other titles or free to play.

I think that if the last of us one was about love, and the last of us two was about hate, then the last of us three must be about acceptance.
    Here's my theory:
The last of us three will start with ellie going to Jackson's, all alone and by herself. Then, in her way, she finds a girl, few yeas younger than her, that's also immune. As ellie goes around the country trying to find dina and j.j,(the baby), she will flashback to her youth and how this new girl(or boy) represent how ellie was. This will show ellie how much joel loved her, but instead of feeling sad and attacked by this flashbacks, shes now feels gratefull. This girl will recover ellie's humanity. they start trusting each other. Ellie tells the little girl/boy her journey with joel, including how she got bit and how she lost dina and the baby. However, the new group of fireflies will find this girl and start looking for her just to make a cure. Ellie and her start running away from the fireflies untill ellie is captured. Then the little girl will have to go in a search for her and in her way find dina and the baby. The girl will promise dina to bring ellie back home. She goes on looking for the fireflies untill she finds them and see's ellie surrounded by a bunch of doctors, (they were about to kill ellie to make the cure). At the end the little girl/boy makes a trade with the fireflies, her life for ellie's. The fireflies accept and free ellie, who was still unconscious. Now the little girl is kept in a room apart and is told that the operation is going to be made tomorrow,(they were going to make the curethenext day). The girl/boy sleeps during thenight peacefully untill abby enters the room the immmune kid is kept on and free's him/her. Abby takes the kid out of the building and gives her a map. There is a red dot that shows where ellie and dina are. Before the kid can ask why abby is doing this security shows up and abby tells the kid to run. The kid runs. Hes/shes now going around the country again to find the farm where dina and ellie where. Days pass, and the kid finally makes it to the farm, where she starts a life as part of ellies, dina's and jj's family. The kid tells ellie thestory of how abby helped her scape, for wich now ellie is gratefull, and all the hate she had for abby banished, forever.

I was always mixed about the ending of the game. Sure I would’ve loved to see Abby drown and Ellie kind of become the monster she was hunting, but I also think Ellie was beginning to realize she was losing her humanity through vengeance. Through Ellie’s eyes, she’s taking out many to take out the person who took her father figure, but we end up realizing Abby was trying to do the same thing. If Ellie killed Abby, the person Abby saved would’ve just repeated the cycle. I genuinely think Ellie wanted to end the cycle of revenge as for both characters, they lost so much and had nothing to go back to. They both in very dark ways got to start a new beginning

I think a big part of why people hate Abby, outside of being a muscular lady, is that her introduction is, after Joel and Tommy save her and her friends from the zombies, she shoots Joel in the leg with a shotgun and then proceeds to brutally beat Joel to death with a golf club in front of his family as they plead for her to stop.
That already put her far into the irredeemable zone in a lot of people's eyes and it didn't help that the theater climax shows her shooting Tommy and killing Jesse then cuts to having us play as her. It just makes Abby look even more like a monster and makes the Abby segment feel like the writers are trying to sell us on her virtues when the past 10-ish hours were us stewing in our hatred of her then that sudden reinforcement with the theater confrontation of why she needs to die in Ellie's view. It made the whole thing fall flat, in my opinion

Why did Tommy do this? FROM_
_lova: "Revenge is like poison. As soon as it takes possession of you, it will turn you into something nasty."_ _That's exactly what happened to Tommy. This path of revenge left a scar on his character, changing him for the worse._
_Before the last fight, Abby asks to stop this and says that she will not fight, but Ellie decides to complete her path of revenge. In the final fight, we see that before killing Abby, Ellie remembers Joel for a second and releases Abby. Why? Because in this way she atoned for her guilt before Joel and, most likely, got rid of the images that haunt her. Atonement through forgiveness. They forgave each other and let go of their suffering._
_In the final scene, Ellie returns home, but it is completely empty. For a person to have her musculature, she would need to consume amounts of protein, calories and other nutrients that would be comparably excessive in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Either she and her companions are absolutely prospering or she is repeatedly -- and visibly -- hoarding rations for herself, which shouldn't sit well with the people around her. The setting has no laws against executing hoarders and thieves anymore.
The saddest part about this game's story is that it could have been fantastic if it had just been told differently. Have the game start from Abby's perspective, introduce her as a new protagonist and pretend that the series is being presented as a sort of anthology of stories from the same setting but starring different characters. Have the same events play out with the revelation that Abby had been tracking Joel (surprise, you were playing as the villain all along! Assassin's Creed 3 did this pretty well, if you want an example of what I'm talking about). Alternatively, have Ellie meet them in a more friendly manner, spend some time getting to know them and growing attached to them, and inadvertently lead Joel to his death because she wanted to introduce them and didn't realize he was their target. *Give Joel a more respectable death.* (It's not that difficult. It doesn't have to be some glorious leap into Valhalla. Telltale's The Walking Dead did it with Lee Everett just fine.) Continue as Ellie afterward, have her hunt down Abby as before and (this is the important part) *let the player choose whether Abby lives or dies.* Instead, they established someone as a villain by having her kill off a beloved character, immediately expected us to grow to sympathize with her, and tried to play it off as something great *just* because it was unexpected. They went full Rian Johnson. Never go full Rian Johnson.

The two worst controlling parts of the game for me were not being involved when Joel was being killed and at least getting the chance to try and help him and taking a few of the main culprits out. It would have also been more believable if Tommy and Ellie had managed to escape to safety. It didn't make any sense at all that they would have left them alive to come back and take revenge, especially Tommy, Joel's brother.
Secondly not getting the chance to take Manny out later in the game , the arsehole who spat on Joel.
It's as though Druckmann deliberately went out of his way to piss off many of the fans who loved the first game so much..

I know this video is quite old, but I feel I need to point something out:
This goes beyond people hating Abby just because she killed Joel. Sure, I didn't like she did that either.
The big part of why Abby is hated so much has much more to do with the fact that her segments are manipulative and play with your emotions. Sure, we see that flashback of her dad's death, but even so, we barely see any of her relationship with her dad aside from them rescuing a zebra - this was surface level at best saying, "Oh, look at what a good person Abby is because she saved a zebra with Dad" but her dad is pretty much a jerk in regards to wanting to sacrifice Ellie - he doesn't even think "We should give Ellie a choice or at least tell Joel" why should I be sad he died when he's willing to kill a little girl for a cure that's been tried and failed at multiple times? For all we know if the surgery with Ellie went through it would've been a failure and Ellie's life would've been taken for nothing, and you get the sense he wouldn't have given a crap if that happened; he would've found some other young child with that immunity and tried it again given the opportunity, I can guarantee you that. And on top of that he had no personality whatsoever.
And with Abby's character, I personally didn't see her showing any remorse for killing Joel - she did it with no second thought. Yes, she had one nightmare, but I always interpreted that as her having nightmares about her dad's death, but she never really has a moment where she sits and goes "Killing Joel has not brought me any peace." And her reasoning for saving Yara and Lev was arbitrary at best - it was clear early on in her campaign that she didn't see anything wrong with what the WLF was doing to the opposing faction nor did she speak out about how inhumanely they treated the Seraphites. And on top of that, she clearly relished in the idea of slitting Dina's throat even though Ellie begged and pleaded saying Dina was pregnant, she actually said, "Good." And that's supposed to make me feel anything but hate for her? And on top of that, the way her character was designed to be super muscular was designed with the full intention of being a controversy - to please Anita Sarkeesian - create a female character with barely any feminine qualities to her and have her beat the crap out of two smaller women one of which is pregnant; what do you suppose people were supposed to think of that? Abby was purely a plot device, she was barely a character, just a means to an end, given no real contextualization or characterization, and any characterization she might have is just so shallow and cheap. She as a character deserved better than this. And this is coming from someone who considers herself a feminist, who talked about this very thing with one of my best friends who also is a feminist, and she completely agrees that Abby's segment in The Last of Us Part II was just screwed up completely.
And I have to sincerely apologize to Laura Bailey for receiving the death threats that she received, nobody deserves that. I can have all the issues I have with Abby, but attacking her actress is just unnecessary.

    • @krasmasov6852
      @krasmasov6852 2 роки тому +1

All segments are manipulative and play with your emotions. That's what fictional storytelling is. Emotional manipulation. We see enough of Abby's relationship with her dad to know that it was positive and healthy. That's what matters. The game doesn't, however, frame Abby or her dad as good people in the sense you mean. We already know Abby is capable of committing atrocities, and her dad was shown to be a coward being unable to answer Marlene when she asked if he'd still do the surgery if it was Abby on the table rather than Ellie. They're complex characters just like everyone else important in the story. It's just important to recognize that they're not wholly evil. That's what really matters. I agree that Jerry is a jerk, though coward is a more accurate description. He didn't want to risk failure with Ellie or Joel opposing the surgery. He wanted to create the vaccine at any cost. But hold up tried and failed many times? Where is that coming from? Are you referring to their previous research on the monkeys at the university? Ellie is immune. They've never encountered immunity in a person before. It was the last thing they needed for a vaccine. Also, the story doesn't really work narratively if the vaccine wasn't going to work. Joel's arc needed him to choose Ellie over the world to truly demonstrate that he's conquered his fear of attachment. Also, Jerry did have personality, but of course it wasn't detailed as much as a character who's in most of the scenes of their respective games.
Her entire motivation for what she does in Seattle is based on remorse for killing Joel. She's extremely defensive about it, and outright tells Lev that she's helping him to alleviate the burden of her guilt. Killing Joel was what she thought would alleviate her grief over her dad's death, but it didn't work. It only made everything worse for her. The moment where she realizes that killing Joel didn't bring her piece was about 3 seconds after she killed Joel as she stares at his corpse waiting for a relief that never comes. She saves Yara and Lev because she's trying to do some good to make up for the atrocity she committed with Joel. To "lighten the load" as she explains when Lev asks. Abby wanted to kill a pregnant Dina as revenge for the murder of pregnant Mel. This was the old hateful and obsessive Abby creeping back in about to repeat the same mistake she made with Joel, but Lev stopped her. Lev, a representation of Abby's new commitment to doing good, kept her on the path and from returning to her old ways. See it works on multiple levels like that, which is why the writing is so brilliant. Oh stop with this Anita Sarkeesien stuff. Find a new boogeyman already. Gamergate was years ago now. Abby's physique is a manifestation of her obsession. We see in the aquarium flashback that she was prioritizing her training over her personal relationships, which ultimately led to her and Owen breaking up. She bulked up because all she cared about was killing a guy who wiped out an entire hospital. Also, Abby has human qualities to her. No need to gender it. You're supposed to be horrified by what Abby does to Dina and Ellie, but relieved that she lets them go. Breaking out of the way of thinking you held onto for 4 years is tough, but Abby did it even if it probably took longer than it should've. Abby has intensely detailed characterization to the point where she's more developed than Ellie was in the first game.

There's a huge difference between having an opinion and being unstable. People can argue amongst themselves about whatever meaningless nonsense they want, I couldn't care less, but being so troubled by a work of fiction not going the way you want it to that you seek to harm the creators is insane. The idea that everyone deserves respect regardless of what they believe is what empowered these lunatics to try and harm others in the first place.

I don't blame the actress who plays Abby, I just don't find Abby to be a likable character, even before she killed Joel. One of the mistakes the game made was having Abby kill Joel first before getting her whole story. In fact, the whole story wasn't written very well. This could have been a great story, and I probably would have loved it, but it just wasn't a good game. The biggest problem is that Abby isn't a well written character.
If the whole idea was to teach us about hatred, then let me introduce to you a movie called Troy. In it, we have two sides of a war going on, the Greeks and the Trojans. And representing each side are two characters, Achilles and Hector. We grow to love both characters, even understanding everyone involved. No one is big bad villain, they're just human characters we grow to love and care about. And when Achilles and Hector finally fight, we don't want either one to win or lose. Even when one kills the other out of hatred, we don't hate the survivor afterward.
The point is that Abby wasn't someone that many liked because she needed to be built up as someone to like, not because the plot or writers says we should. And having her kill Joel in the beginning was a major writing mistake to do. I'm not against the idea of Abby killing Joel, I'm against how it was handled, including her character.

    Just finished. Now processing.
I think the trouble was the pacing and how the story played out between playable characters.
If right after Ellie heads to Seattle, we saw a bit of Abby’s back story, then each day in Seattle revealed the goings on from each perspective, it would have felt a bit more even-keeled.
Playing the whole arc from one and then retreading the whole arc from the other was frustrating. It felt more jarring and I was just waiting to get back to the climactic point I had reached with Ellie.
I’d have had more empathy for Abby if each day showed me both sides of the story in smaller chunks, even though it likely would have wrecked gameplay.

    • @ExperimentLife
      @ExperimentLife 2 роки тому +4

I disagree. If the game was chopped up, yes, the story would flow better but the game play would suffer. I would have disliked having to switch gear setup each time, but you already know that. Plus I think we all wanted to play as Ellie the whole time so switching would have made the game feel worse. Idk, maybe the 10 hour break from Abby was needed to try to forget what she did in the beginning.Truth be told, I didn't mind the story all that much. I think it was good but not great. Now the game play was amazing and I think sacrificing the game play for a little better story telling would have been a huge mistake because then I would have definitely not played it.
I think they dug themselves in a hole when they decided Joel was going to die in the beginning. It would take a great story developer to pull it together. Unfortunately that didn't happen.

If by doing this they would've lost the value of the twist when you restart the timeline from Abbys pov. When you restart the Seattle timeline with Abby you start a relationship with the characters that Ellie, you, have without emotion killed. This is where you start to question your own decisions as Ellie because suddenly the characters you have killed now have a backstory and emotions and means something to Abby.
Thats is also why it is crucial for Joel to die within the first 2hours of gameplay, to set this story up. It is an amazing story laid out and the hurt all of us felt when Joel died in the beginning is proof of excellent storytelling.

    • @fgcaceninja
      @fgcaceninja Рік тому

@@jm860421 I'm sorry but that "twist" was a straight up retcon (look up the doctors face in TLOU1.) and so damn predictable to make it seem like the most brilliant plot connection between 1 and 2. Joel had the most pathetic poorly written death ever (they know how to survive and Tommy becomes a straight up monkey) and the direction was extremely wack/coincidental. Had those flashbacks with Joel and Ellie been put earlier to ease us into who they are now after the timeskip it would have had a much better impact. Not to mention the terrible decision to make you do all three days with Ellie and then Abby. If it had led up to a point where we knew Abby and then she killed Joel we would have had more understanding as to why she did what she did. Playing flashbacks into more flashbacks was just poor direction/pacing. I also hate the bias between Ellie and Abby. Ellie is put out as pure evil. While Abbys side is all look at these people Ellie killed, look at these dogs Ellie killed. Its just so damn bad at telling both perspectives evenly. Attack on titan does this SO much better.

I wish they had ended it after Seattle. I was okay with Joel's murder, I was okay with playing as Abby, and I felt that Ellie and Tommy's killing spree was enough of a revenge story to hit the themes and message the writers wanted to convey. They even could have ended it with Tommy telling Ellie he found Abby and leaving it open as to whether or not Ellie decided to go after her, similar as to what they did in Part 1 where you couldn't tell if Ellie believed Joel about the Fireflies or not.
But they tacked another two hours on it just to rob Ellie of any semblence of a happy ending and I feel like the story suffered for it. Part 1 didn't have a happy ending either, but it gave us a little bit of a pay off with Joel finding meaning in his life again. Ellie got exactly what she said she was terrified of in Part 1: being alone. It was bleak and depressing and all we got was Ellie sadly walking off into the woods. No payoff at all :(

I was hoping that would have been addressed, because that's not how vaccines work and we have no info on whether Jerry had ANY experience creating vaccines to begin with. He was literally just playing mad scientist. They get Ellie, run some tests and decided within a day or so, 'we gotta cut her apart'. Jerry was the only one who could create the vaccine? Based on what? What kind of doctor doesn't create any kind of research documentation? A Jerry who was going to fail from the start. 😂

Hell, at the beginning, a Firefly probably could have convinced Joel to do it. They spent a lot of resources just to say "FU Fedra". FEDRA would at least have someone from the CDC who would know to perform a spinal tap or plasma examination and keeping her alive would be the top priority. So hypothetically. they can find out that Ellie isn't immune but rather her mutation is latent for 5 years before activating. Since the Fireflies fast tracked that vaccine and now everyone has inoperable Cordycep infections. If their motive was to screw over FEDRA, she would be more valuable to them alive.

    1. I didn't like Ellies reasoning for hating Joel
The fireflies didn't give her a choice either. They didn't brief her before the operation.
If they said "Hey this procedure will result in your death and the chances of developing a cure are low, but that possibility still exists. Are you willing to sacrifice yourself to give humanity a future?"
And if Ellie responded with yes, then I would understand why she would be angry. But they didn't tell her and that's why she asks Joel what happened at the end of the first game. Now she's reaping the benefits of that decision by living a happy life in a relatively safe community with a parental figure and a loving partner in toe. So this made Ellies character more unlikable
    2. The portrayal of Joel's character and subsequent death.
Joel is a lot more passive and trusting unlike in the first game. He doesn't defend himself when Ellie blows up on him. He was acting too unguarded when surrounded by Abbie's group and readily tells them his real name. Which results in them attacking him and his subsequent death.
The death wasn't heroic in the least and Ellie gets captured and sees it all happen. Imagine what was going through Joel's mind. To fail at protecting one of the few people he cares about in the world.
    3. The game then forces you to play as Abbie for 10 hours.
Why would I want to play as the character that killed Joel? I hate Abbie and no amount of exposition or perspective shift is going to change that.
I remember watching a compellation of a bunch of UA-cam Lets Players, letting Abbies character die when they encountered Elie. That should make it evident that the devs failed at making her character likable.
    4. The ending was unsatisfying
Ellie goes on this massive revenge quest, murdering scores of people, and when she finally reaches Abbie. Instead of shooting her to end it all, she unties her from her bonds and puts down her backpack with all her weapons. In favour of using a knife. None of those decisions made sense in my opinion. Why put yourself in a disadvantageous position? She loses two fingers as a direct result of those choices. The player is not given the choice to kill Abbie either
    5. Minor critiques
Abbie's character design looks unappealing and the sex scene was quite unnecessary.
The game forces you to kill a dog
Compared to the first game, the tone in Part 2 was a lot darker. Consistency is key in story telling.

In Ellie’s defense, that was a big shock to hear, and she did have a right to angry. You are right in stating that Joel shouldn’t have taken all of it, but he was the only one left to take it as all the fireflies were gone. I have no doubt Marlene wouldn’t gotten the same treatment if she were still around. Ellie had survivors guilt really bad from all that happened in the first game, even years later. She wished she had died to bring some meaning to all the trauma. All that said, she was coming around in the end, and I’ve no doubt they would’ve patched things up had they not taken Joel so damn soon…
Everything else you said, I pretty much agree with apart from not killing Abby. It wouldn’t have solved anything and Abby did demonstrate guilt by taking responsibility for the kid who was then reliant on her. Killing her would have put Ellie in the exact same position as Abby in removing a parent figure from a kids life. Abby and Ellie both lost nearly everything from all this. The damage was already done.

Gameplay wise, TLoU 2 is fantastic. The story-telling is what turned people away, mostly how they handled Abby and Ellie. Both of their stories are driven by revenge, but for whatever reason, the developers felt that Abby is entitled to revenge but Ellie isn’t. Abby spent 5 years between games hunting down Joel to kill him, to the point where it basically became an obsession, and this is after Owen kept telling her to forget about it and move on. Then when she finally kills Joel, she gets confused and emotional that Ellie inevitably came after her and her friends died in the process. Was she really expecting no repercussions for killing Joel after hearing Ellie beg her to spare him? Did she really think Ellie wouldn’t come for her simply because “she let her live” after killing someone she cares about?
And then there’s the end to Ellie’s story. She finally gets to Abby but lets her live and in the process, Dina leaves her, she looses her switchblade and can never play guitar again, while Abby gets to live and build on her new friendship with Lev. Why did Ellie gets punished so heavily for seeking revenge? Why was Abby entitled to revenge but Ellie wasn’t? It’s like once the developers created Abby, they fell in love with her and tried to force the players to like her too while they got a hate-boner for Ellie for some reason

@@geaarmel6764 Sure but then again the people Ellie killed were way less worth killing than Abby since they didn't directly cause Joel's death and Abby's life isn't any more special than any of them, they've all gone through the rough reality of what their lives have become and they have also lost their loved ones just like both of the girls. Abby has gone through something very similar as Ellie but she's the one that gets to exact her revenge and it's okay but Ellie isn't after slaughtering so many people just like Abby has? You could argue that Ellie just became broken in the end and she was tired but it makes so little sense considering the events beforehand and the fact that other people had the same value. If anything I do strongly agree that if they gave the players 2 choices it would have worked out and it would break the format of the first game as well. The ending only speaks to me as a tool to make the different and subvert expectations just to try to not be "cliche" and unique just for the sake of it rather than it being a coherent ending that matched up with the motivations of the people in the story.

Although I like the idea of switching the opponents as playing characters, the back story of Abby's was too scrambled to root for her, unlike Ellie's relation with Joel was crafted so beautifully in the epic Lost Of Us Part I. Abby's characterization was so desperately wanting us to like her in short time. Her relationship with her father and boyfriend were very shallow and short living. I only started to gain interest after the introduction of Lev and Yara. The creators should have focused more on the two kids, portraying Abby more as a care taker like Joel himself which they only did near the climax. In a hind sight if these two stories were more intertwined, it would have been great. All said, the game was no short of excellence. Unfortunately the first part set such an high standard and expectations.

Whaaaaat? How can you possibly claim that Abby's relationship with Owen was shallow? I genuinely don't understand how you can even make that claim. She meets the kids half way through Seattle day 1. Before that they fill out Manny and Mel and give us some flashbacks to Owen which are all pretty important to establish that she's struggling with where she is. Then she dreams of the kids that night and wakes up day 2 with a new found purpose. I would say it's practically her whole story.

a possible reason so many people got worked up over joel dying was, well, grief. So many of us are so attached to Joel and Ellie, that when one of them dies, they can't handle it and they lash out.

    • @Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human
      @Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human 3 роки тому +40

Which is the whole point of the game. Grief drives Ellie to do the wrong thing, to pursue vengenance with such anger that it destroys her life.
Just as some of the fandom got so angry and grieved Joel so much they lashed out just as Ellie did, in some cases targeting the voice actress for Abby, in some cases Naughty Dog themselves.
A reaction which is unquestionably just as wrong as Ellie's quest for revenge.
The game dives into the 'us vs them' mentality, the way that we justify Ellie's violence because that's *our* side so she must be in the right.
It plays on that by then making us play as Abby and realise that from her perspective she was just as justified and in the right as Ellie.
It's incredible that the fandom personified the point of the game so much.

I think the major reason for people hating on the game, particular the story, and they probably don't even realize it is that people are inherently inclined to people/groups they know or they are more familiar with. This is rooted deeply in our psychology because thousands of years ago we had to stick/work together with our group in order to survive. The people we saw everyday in our tribe were something like our family, therefore it's completely normal to feel threatened or hate outsiders because most of the time outsiders would mean a rivalry for food or ambushes to steal goods or people. People always saw foreigners as enemies because most of the time they had to fight them off or be alerted. In modern times all these emotions that come up in the game might be a bit confusing but I personally couldn't really sympathize with Abby and her people at all, simply because I know Joel, Elli etc. way longer and considered them as part of my tribe, family. If you ask me, it all comes down to yourself and your view, if burglars come into my house and try to harm me or my family, I won't really care about their family or their reasons for their actions, it simply comes down to my tribe, my family, the rest comes after. I really loved the gameplay, but for the story, I thought that they had some cheap plot spots to induce some artificial manipulative feelings to the player, that were very obvious, felt a little cheap.

Also, Joel was at the end of his life, Ellie was still young and had a whole life in front of her. It is an objectively bad storyline, if you like realism, TLOU 1 and continuance.
Joel doesn't just trust random people, that's not how he survived up to this point.
Nora doesn't lie to Ellie about Abby's exact location, when there would have been no bad consequence as she wouldn't have known until way later.
Abby beats Joel's brakes off with a golf club, and then even though she is living the power of vengeance, she decides to let Tommy and Ellie go. Lmao. Ellie said she was going to kill them ! 🤣

Ellie sacrificed her family, dozens more lives (who had nothing to do with Joel), and went to a different state completely... all to beat Abbys brakes off and then spare her life... despite knowing that Abby might come back and give her the Joel treatment. It's bad.

Here is how I would make the story:
-Joel and Abby had been friends for 4 years and Joel had already trusted Abby. Abby's reason to befriend Joel was so that she could gain his trust. So then, Abby finally kills Joel. (It makes more sense then just Joel saving Abby and then telling her his name a minute later)
-The players are given the option to either go to Santa Barbara and hunt down Abby or stay in the house. (if you stay in the house, Dina and JJ would stay with you and would not leave you)
-During the beach fight, the players are given the option to either: kill Abby and spare Lev, kill Lev and spare Abby, kill both Abby and Lev or spare both Abby and Lev.
-The game gave you the option to either spare Mel and Owen or kill Mel and Owen. (If you kill Mel and Owen, Abby would go to the theater and kill Dina, she would also cut her pregnant stomach, so JJ is dead.) (If you spare Mel and Owen Abby would NEVER enter the theater)

I played the first game after watching the show and loved it! I couldn’t believe how closely the series followed the game.
I was hesitant to play part 2 because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to know what was coming in season 2 of the show but I decided to play it regardless.
I’d heard from a few people about how divisive the game was but I didn’t know why, and luckily managed to avoid spoilers. That said, I had my suspicions about what was to come.
I loved it! Of course I can see why people were upset and I think you covered pretty much everything in this video, but as upsetting as it was to see Joel die, and at the hands of a character you control, I thought it was a natural path for the story. Like Ellie says in the game, “Joel crossed a lot of people.”
I thought the gameplay was outstanding, the visuals were superb, the story was one of the best I’ve known in a game, and the whole thing was so immersive that I felt like I was in a movie.
My only real criticism is that I was left feeling a bit cold by the ending. I get it of course, no one wins, even after exacting their revenge. Still, I finished the game and kind of sat there in silence for a few minutes trying to process everything. Despite my numbness though, it seemed a fitting ending to the story and I’m glad Ellie showed compassion in those final moments.
To sum up, I loved it but it took its role on me emotionally. But I guess that’s the point.

    • @ItsSVO
      @ItsSVO Рік тому +1

The cold empty feeling is exactly how I felt too, but that’s exactly what I want from a story like this, something emotionally challenging that really provokes thought in me about my own life etc. when a story makes you feel this way it is an incredibly well written story, I would urge you not to use that as a criticism because imo it should be the opposite.

Problem is the story’s writing. I figured Joel would die but at the start of the game was not smart. You wanted to see Ellie learn the truth and you do but the flash backs just don’t fit. Other than that gameplay and effects great but it’s to much of the same killing stealth gameplay. Abbys side characters are also pointless and you just don’t care.

How don't the flashbacks fit? They made sense to me? The stealth gameplay is a vast improvement on the original game in giving you options on how to get through an area. First time through I made the mistake of playing Ellie and Abby the same way. Ellie is designed to be stealthy, Abby is designed to be a tank. Second time through I played Abby much more aggressively and had a blast. It made a massive difference. The side characters matter to Abby which made them matter to me when I was playing as her because I was invested in her character.

I came to this game late. I never played part 1 so I had no particular attachment to any of the characters. I admit I was not happy when I was forced to play as Abbey and I actually quit playing the game for a few weeks. I decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did. The game is truly depressing but it allowed me to see that I really didn't like the Ellie character at the end. Her threatening to kill Lev in order to get Abbey to fight was despicable. I was glad to see Ellie end up alone at the end. I will give Naughty Dog credit for creating a game that actually made me feel one way or another about the characters. I don't think I've ever played a game where I felt anything about the characters. This game was also super intense in some of the boss battles. I am definitely in the camp of those that didn't hate the game, and I certainly didn't love the Ellie character either. During the final fight I was playing as Ellie but wishing there was a way to let Abbey win.

And when someone goes down the path as to tell me that Abby only went after one person as opposed to Ellie going after all. Ellie only went after those characters for info of Abbey's whereabouts. She would've let them go but of course they had to try and attack at last minute after giving up information... Ellie was justified.

That’s with every game but this game did an effective but shit job at it. You’re meant to a hate a character in a game, not the game itself because of the character. You know why this is in TLOU2? Because they make you play as Abby. A person so poorly written that kills Joel just to say “oh, women are more powerful than men”. This game’s story is a horse’s ass and a bad horse. Why doesn’t Ellie kill Abby when she could drown her? Why did Ellie not kill Abby when she was walking through the door to see her killing Joel? This is the bad part of the story, YOU DONT LIKE ANYONE. Not Ellie, not Abby, not anyone. How do you like a game where the protagonist is unlikeable, the story has so much plot holes, where the developers destroy the entire story just to prove that revenge is bad, all because you got sad or mad? Fuck this game!
Oh by the way, Tess in TLOU1 was originally meant to be a side character helping Joel and Ellie with a revenge mission just like what happens in TLOU2. But they rejected that idea because they realized a post-apocalyptic revenge quest is too unrealistic. Funny, right? This proves the developers did destroy their own story.
