Everyone should play the same game. It's probably too late for WoW because the people who love WoW love their addons at this point. But new games should never do this again.
I think the biggest issue with addons is, like you say, communicating information to the player that are hard to keep track of in the moment like dispellable debuffs. As much as I’d love a world (of warcraft) where the game was played smoothly addon-free, i think it ever happening would be tough as it would take dev time and resources that management might never greenlight.
Blizzard should be allowed to moderate addons, to make sure it's not mandatory for players to have them. The fact that the developers design there raids with addons in mind isn't great for a number of reasons. :P
i also think addons have driven development too. think about xmogs and viewing stuff in-game or searching the entire game database for what items look like....all of thise came from addons. so clearly, addons aren't all evil or all bad. i just think theres a line we need to draw somewhere...
Back in Wrath where you didnt need addons to tell you to gtfo of fire. Now Blizzard develops their game around addons and as a result the floor is lava and it feels like your'e playing Dance Dance Revolution while trying to play the game. This is why opening the game to addons was a mistake. DBM for ability timers was the limit back then more or less, but now its ridiculous.
for me as an ex-Mythic player, i just use DBM and just a cursor WA to made my WOW experience more challenge, the problem is addons provide to more help for new players or some wife players to get hi content done cuz they need to show off...and you get stuff so easy, and players forget to learn simple stuff to be a good player, macros on early days was kind of a secret for players wow know an language or devs to get an advantage to control the sheep's, this days it's more knowledgeable but should be a tool just for devs and not for players. to end this, let players learn and prob going to help guilds behave like they should.......helping players...NOT FORCE THEN TO BUY CONTENT .
Comparing FF to WOW, FF knows how to accuratly do aoe graphics. Thinking of the fungus delves for example... there are so many places where you often can barely see if there is a void under you or not BECAUSE the f'ing grass is visually on top of the swirly... also I had several dungeons and a shit load of people where you couldn't even see any voids because everything was bright and flashing with pala storm, ww flurry and stuff like that. BOOM massive damage in the melee camp because nobody could see the aoe because of all the animation. FF does this wayyyy better then WOW and as long as they don't fix things like that, keep your hands of those addon. Furthermore, I can barely imagen any of the current highups actually playing WOW and making a picture for themselves. So thumbs up for the FF producer on that point as well.
I *think* there's a graphics setting that allows you to turn off spell effects for everyone but yourself. Maybe that'd help a little 😄I seem to remember I have that toggled on for instances.
i think that for competitive stuff like pushing world first mythic content i dont think addons are good because look at it now...they're over-designing boss fights to compensate for the presence of addons that tell you how to play...and its an arms race....but to your casual player who will NEVER do that fight....at its most difficult....i dont see an issue with something like dbm in dungeons to help remind them if they're standing in a puddle...maybe they ahve a shit graphics card and they literally cant see it...or maybe they're blind...and those addons help those people even with disabilities ect...

Without addons i had quite wow decades ago.
if addons play the game for you why does everyone in M+ suck
